[meteorite-list] Poll

2005-08-21 Thread Michael Fowler
I'm wondering whether everyone has jumped to a wrong conclusion at to
what is the correct answer.

In a vacuum all bodies will be accelerated by gravity at the same rate.
However the question was if ON EARTH! (emphasis added) 2 spheres of
different weight are dropped. Since the heavier sphere has a smaller
surface to volume ratio it will be slowed less by air friction and will
land first. The difference in time over 100 meters will be VERY small,
but it will be there none the less.

Hello Everyone,

I took a poll a few days again regarding the latest "discussion" between

feelings on such exchanges. I said that I would aggregate the data and not
post private email.

Well, I received exactly eight private responses. Four were for against

Nothing. The sample size is much too small to make a meaningful conclusion.

I had thought of posting a direct quote from one person since I found it

Hehehe, that's right capitano but what do we know ?
In fact only 4% might be correct according to some
scientists that postulated the fifth fundamental interaction
which has a repulsive character depending on the number
of nucleons. So the smaller mass may fall the first.
Or are there only measurements errors ?

Re: [meteorite-list] Poll

2005-08-21 Thread Michael L Blood
Hi Raz & all,
That is an example of why there are no longer any
scientific "laws" - ie, at the sub-atomic level there
are "particles" that go backwards in time. (of course,
there are not any "real" "particles" as there is no
such thing as "solid" matter, only dense vibrations
HOWEVER, except at the most semantically literal
level, all objects, barring "wind resistance" fall at the
same rate, regardless of weight.
But, technically, you may well be correct. It is one
of the greatest things about "reality" - it is always
relative! (not to mention ironic, paradoxical and
hysterically funny!)
Best wishes, Michael

But Michael,

the 2% stems from me.

Re: [meteorite-list] Poll Results

2006-10-19 Thread Greg Hupe

Hi Walter,

Perfect timing. The few have spoken and we have listened. I was going to
post my results later today but may as well do now also. Of the replies I
received, the majority want to know what is going on and appreciate and
"learn" by the exchanges, as uneasy and often times negative as they are.
The most prominent statement from each person was the fact they would like
to have "classified" material WITH a name or number (NWA, DAG, DHOFAR, etc.)
offered instead of "possibly paired to..." and the like. If the material has
been properly classified and is officially "paired" to whatever by a lab,
then that is what they strongly want by their emails to me. The other
prominent statement was that they do not like the obvious coat-tailing,
using of other's classified names/numbers, etc. The terms of "Lazy and
Reckless" were two common words used in association to these offenders they
mention in their emails. I couldn't agree more. The main and most important
phrase was to "...let the scientists do the pairing and not these lazy
freeloaders...".

I had one person suggest I be more clear in my emails during these exchanges
and another suggest I tone it down a notch. I appreciate their honesty and
forwardness that I asked for. In conducting the poll as did you Walter, I
feel I have learned from it and will work harder on self improvement which I
normally do anyway. It is good to have constructive criticism when
necessary, and I welcome it at any time (in private is usually best at first
if needed).

"Thank You" all who replied and may we all learn and grow as a community by
these "exchanges".

Best regards,
Greg

2006-10-19 Thread Dave Freeman mjwy

Dear Greg, Walter, Stan, and other wanta-be paired too's;
I didn't give my full opinion...as it wasn't something I felt good about
but I had this other idea keep coming up.

Why doesn't this issue include an IMCA opinion, as it is part of the
IMCA's mission to help keep the authenticity element there, wouldn't the
shirt tailing be some form of authenticity ."paired like, paired to,
thought to be paired like-to, wanta-be paired to, could eventually be
paired to"; wouldn't it make some sense to get an IMCA opinion here?
If at least 1/2 the members involved, the IMCA could offer opinion on
the good 1/2. OOPS, the fully authenticated half. Shirt tail calls
should go for a yard sale price just like a car without a title, or a
horse with out a brand inspection.
I feel it degrades the dealer who tries to shirt tail just as it
degrades the whole collecting world when we start seeing too much public
squabbling and thus back to a qualified referee organizationIMCA.
If Stan is an IMCA member, it should have been taken there for
discussion and to see if a ruling was appropriate.
I realize IMCA is not a meteorite police but, keeping the hobby and the
business in a clean-good public standing is important to us all.

Hi Walter,

Perfect timing. The few have spoken and we have listened. I was going
to post my results later today but may as well do now also. Of the
replies I received, the majority want to know what is going on and
appreciate and "learn" by the exchanges, as uneasy and often times
negative as they are. The most prominent statement from each person
was the fact they would like to have "classified" material WITH a name
or number (NWA, DAG, DHOFAR, etc.) offered instead of "possibly paired
to..." and the like. If the material has been properly classified and
is officially "paired" to whatever by a lab, then that is what they
strongly want by their emails to me. The other prominent statement was
that they do not like the obvious coat-tailing, using of other's
classified names/numbers, etc. The terms of "Lazy and Reckless" were
two common words used in association to these offenders they mention
in their emails. I couldn't agree more. The main and most important
phrase was to "...let the scientists do the pairing and not these lazy
freeloaders...".

I had one person suggest I be more clear in my emails during these
exchanges and another suggest I tone it down a notch. I appreciate
their honesty and forwardness that I asked for. In conducting the poll
as did you Walter, I feel I have learned from it and will work harder
on self improvement which I normally do anyway. It is good to have
constructive criticism when necessary, and I welcome it at any time
(in private is usually best at first if needed).

"Thank You" all who replied and may we all learn and grow as a
community by these "exchanges".

Hello Everyone,

I took a poll a few days again regarding the latest "discussion"
between dealers. I asked individuals to email me in private, letting
me know their feelings on such exchanges. I said that I would
aggregate the data and not post private email.

Well, I received exactly eight private responses. Four were for
against such exchanges and four were against such exchanges. What
can we conclude from this?

Nothing. The sample size is much too small to make a meaningful
conclusion.

I had thought of posting a direct quote from one person since I found
it opinion so interesting (I have his permission), but I decided
against it since I did not receive a similar but opposing post
espousing the opposite point-of-view and in the interest of fairness
it would not have been appropriate.

RE: [meteorite-list] Poll Results

2006-10-22 Thread stan .

Walter,

I might as well chime in on this one too -

I only recived a few emails off list on this subject - three to be exact.
all highly supportive of the effort i was making to provide the best
possible information to collectors.

aparently the one thing that alot of collectors do not like is to buy
something that is advertised as being ultra rare and only later finding out
that it wasnt as exclusive as they were lead to belive.

As an example - when I bought the EL7 in tucson I was lead to belive that I
had purchased nearly all of the material save for a few hundred grams each
owned by Matteo and Adam Hupe. I described the material as such in my
auctions and when some more of the stuff came out onto the market through
other channels one person who bought some previously on ebay wrote me a note
saying that he was less than happy about the situation finding out that more
of the material was avalible than originally though. I explained the history
of my purchase of the enstatite material and that seemed to satisfy the
concerns of the buyer in question. I imagine similar sentiments have been
felt by collectors thanks to all of the unique number NWA CO3s from a few
years back - or more recently from the NWA pallasite that sold out with a
TKW of a few hundred grams only for 5 more kgs to come out ont he market
shortly thereafter (or so, dont recall specific weights off the top of my
head). In this regard it deosnt really matter if the seller in question is
knowingly misrepresenting the material with a lower than real TKW - it just
leaves a bad taste in the mouth of a buyer to see the TKW go up and the
value go down of something that is bought early in on the game.

However I think the strongest evidence can be seen when buyers speak with
their wallets. The gram sized slice of my new angrite I recently sold on
ebay resulted in a final price of 200$/g - a fair margain over that of the
price per gram nwa 2999 has sold for recently even in smaller peices. This
could ahve several explainations: A) it's a fluke B) buyers didnt buy my
belief that these rocks are likely paired and figured they were buying a
new, unique angrite of low TKW or C) buyers apreciated being provided with
as much information as possible. I have less than 5g of this stuff left to
sell so i doubt I'll be able to establish any long term trends for it with
such a small smaple - but taken at face value I think the numbers do say
something.

[meteorite-list] POLL: What Do You Want?

2009-11-25 Thread Meteorites USA

Hi Listees & Meteorite People,

I've created a poll for gathering some very important information. This
information is vital in determining the course of action and direction
the Meteorite Wiki website will take. The Poll is located on the
meteorite blog website but is strictly for gathering information on the
Meteorite Wiki.

What Do You Want In A Meteorite Website?
Go here to Vote: www.meteoriteblog.com
Poll is located in the sidebar of the site

1 Question, 20 Answers and percentage based results. You are more than
welcome to choose more than one answer and in fact are encouraged to do
so. Choose the answers that best fit what YOU would like to see in a
meteorite website.

If you have something to add please feel free to send me an email with
suggestions, opinions, gripes, or rants. ;) Questions are encouraged!

Please take part in the poll, the more information we compile the better
the data will be!

Thanks in advance for your participation.

Eric Wichman

[meteorite-list] Poll : Online Encyclopedia of Meteorites

2006-02-23 Thread Pelé Pierre-Marie
Hello to the List,

I need your advice.

I'm starting a mad project. I'm building an
Encyclopedia of Meteorites online.

1> All meteorites from the world, with classification,
picture(s), circumstances of find/fall
2> A free mode (you can just look at each meteorite
file)
3> Subscription system which allows to view at the
database, make multi-query searches, print reports,
and the best, allows you to manage your collection
online
4> It's your encyclopedia. You can send pictures,
texts, add-on to improve the database
5> Advertising system which allows dealer to put on
advertising for low prices

I need your ideas to improve the system, I would like
also the price you are ready to pay for an annual
fee...

Best regards,

Pierre-Marie PELE

2006-02-23 Thread Courtois Julien
Bonjour List, Hello Pierre-Marie,

This is indeed a very ambitious project...

For me the word "encyclopedia" is now somehow connected to the word
"Wikipedia"... Wouldn't it be a good idea to start there and make the
meteoritics entries a little bit less "thin"?

It would be a good idea for the meteorites discoverers/recovers to
write there an article about their meteorites... just an idea...

Regards and good luck for your project

Julien

Hi Pierre-Marie,

my suggestions:

Work together with David Weir, his page about the systematics is simply the
best on web and better than all books, so you'll save a lot of work.

Tell the list, what the morons from the Museum in Paris asked for a simple
photo from a single meteorite there, when you were writing your standard
work about French meteorites, a book, which they obviously never could
accomplish by there own.
So my suggestion for the fees are:

- institutional collections and their members.
500$ per year.

- dealers 250$ per annum

- Metsoc members 100$ per year

- Collectors 20$ per year

- IMCA members (as long as they are no dealers), students, pupils,
pensioners, kids, animals: free

BUT!! : The fee is reduced with 1$ with each meteorite or meteorite
related photo handed in, 3$ when it shows a main mass/main piece.

Buckleboo!
Martin

AW: [meteorite-list] Poll : Online Encyclopedia of Meteorites

2006-02-24 Thread Martin Altmann
Yep Mike,

But such a huge aim, a work of decades, strongly depends on our support,
especially as far as pictures are concerned (that's why I made the
suggestion of enormous fees, which could deducted by each pic handed in).
Also I know that many collectors like to document their specimens with
secondary material as comprehensive as possible. Would be great if they
could contribute too.

I hope that with Pierre's effort we all would be not so phlegmatic, as we
were with similar projects.
Remember Bernhard Rems' "world of meteorites", which had to shut down,
because almost nobody was interested in.
(Btw where is he? He doesn't answer on Emails anymore, but I saw that he has
running a blog).

And hey David, don't bother, I thought only, if that work will be
encyclopaedic, then sooner or later a chapter about the systematics of
meteorites would be necessary.
Thus for Pierre not torturing himself, and who could best your Studies,
I think one could link them there.
And finally, as you are always up to date with the recent publications, you
could help him from time to time to update the NWA-pairings

Just ideas.
Martin

Hello Mike,

thanks for your message and greetings. I expect a
price of about $36.00 a year ($3 a month). I don't
want to make especially a big business on this but I
wish to cover my hosting costs.

I can already use the thousands of pictures I have on
my CDs and let people send me their own pictures
later.

What will be really long is to store all the datas for
each meteorite in a database ! I did the same work
for my CDs and it lasted months.

Best regards,

Pierre

That is perfectly reasonable, I would be the first to sign up when you are

Hello Mike,

thanks for your message and greetings. I expect a
price of about $36.00 a year ($3 a month). I don't
want to make especially a big business on this but I
wish to cover my hosting costs.

I can already use the thousands of pictures I have on
my CDs and let people send me their own pictures
later.

What will be really long is to store all the datas for
each meteorite in a database ! I did the same work
for my CDs and it lasted months.

Best regards,

Pierre

This is a great idea! People could send in photos of
the masses or
meteorites in museums that no-one ever gets to see.

AW: [meteorite-list] Poll : Online Encyclopedia of Meteorites

2006-03-08 Thread Mike Fowler

In February David Weir wrote about the MetBase Library and how his
collection is included in it.
I was wondering how many private collections are included in MetBase
and how big it has to be, to be included?

What are the criteria for being included, and how do you get a
collection included?

I would like mine to be there someday. I don't think I'm ready yet,
but give me a year or two!

Mike Fowler
Chicago

David Weir wrote on Feb. 24, 2006:

.. the subscription-based MetBase Library
continuously edited by Jörn Koblitz (over 30,000 entries I believe),
which is widely utilized around the world,

MetBase is a truly remarkable project,

and I'm priviledged to have my modest collection entered into
its extensive database.

I do not subscribe to MetBase, but I have seen
its scope, and I think others on this List might be interested;
(contact: info at metbase.de).

David

Hi all,

Just wanted to include the website for MetBase, which explains its
scope

- really awesome.

RE: [meteorite-list] POLL: rustiest most unstable known

2005-10-07 Thread Kevin Forbes
Hi Harlan, Dronino, It came supposedly protected, coated in nail polish,
withtin a few days began corroding. A month later, it was lifting the nail
polish. It is now sitting in a jar of caustic and methylated spirits, in an
attempt at removing its hydroscopic properties. One piece I got, I coated in
beeswax immediately. It has not yet showed any corrosion, but probably will.
Sweaty finger prints on Gibeon are also a problem, one bit needs sanding and
re-polishing.

RE: [meteorite-list] POLL: rustiest most unstable known

2005-10-07 Thread Bill Mason III
I'd like to wade in here uninvited. My life has been around adhesives and
corrosion. In order to have corrosion you have to have H2O + O2 + Cl and if
you have a meteorite in a vacuum you will not have corrosion. The Ionic
vapor phase happens when moisture can reach an unstable substrate. The
rusting is the attempt of the substrate to return to its original state.

Rusting under a coating is common when you have a coating that has
micro-porosity and no vapor phase inhibitor in the formula of the coating.
Encapsulated moisture with a bit of oxygen makes a great environment for
ionic exchange. = rust

Re: [meteorite-list] POLL: rustiest most unstable known

2005-10-07 Thread Mark Miconi
I have had my nantan in Arizona for 6 years with no changes. We use
evaporative cooling for most of the summer with no ill effects.

I must have just been lucky to get a stable piece. I know it is destined to
crumble one day.

A P.S. to my last, a Nantan, Nandan, near corroded in front of me in 1
week,

I cleaned off some of the Goethite, Iron oxide, and away it went, 25% of
the

rotten thing turned into a pile of scale where it sat. Brr. I should
have left it alone, it had sort of already stabilised over 500 years.

Re: AW: [meteorite-list] Poll : Online Encyclopedia of Meteorites

2006-02-24 Thread David Weir

Hello Martin,

Thanks for the kind comments about my site, which will remain free for
everyone to study. My site is simply my ongoing synopsis of selected
research being published by the many accomplished meteoriticists, whose
dedication to this field of science allows anyone with an interest to
follow the progress of revealing the history of our solar system. It's
the best front-row seat I could imagine.

I'm sure Pierre-Marie has his own original ideas for his potential
online Encyclopedia of Meteorites, and I have no desire to expand my
scope to encompass more than I am now writing on my meteoritestudies
site, or to enter into any commercial ventures.

I am already familiar with the subscription-based MetBase Library
continuously edited by Jörn Koblitz (over 30,000 entries I believe),
which is widely utilized around the world, so I'm not sure what more
needs to be established in this arena. MetBase is a truly remarkable
project, and I'm priviledged to have my modest collection entered into
its extensive database. I do not subscribe to MetBase, but I have seen
its scope, and I think others on this List might be interested;
(contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED]).

Regards,
David

 - really awesome.

Re: AW: [meteorite-list] Poll : Online Encyclopedia of Meteorites

2006-03-08 Thread Alexander Seidel
> In February David Weir wrote about the MetBase Library and how his
> collection is included in it.
> I was wondering how many private collections are included in MetBase
> and how big it has to be, to be included?

The person to answer this with more competence than me is the author
of MetBase himself, Joern Koblitz ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). He probably
is a member of this list and will let you know all the facts in more
detail than I can do here.

But for the sake of a quick late night (local time) answer from
Europe: there is no lower limit for a private collection to be
included, in fact there are many "collections" with only 1 meteorite
in "them" :-). Then again, in my last version of the program I count
236 entries with 10 or more meteorites in the collection, and a new
version seems to be at the doorstep. Joern will add to this, when
he reads it.

As I said in one of my earlier mails, these private collection data
represent nothing but a snapshot in space and time, which is obvious
since we live in an ever changing world - and collector X´s collection
data provided for publication in say 2002 will most probably have
changed by now. But nonetheless you will at least have sort of a good
overview here, and postal addresses of the collectors are included,
which is a value by itself.

> What are the criteria for being included, and how do you get a
> collection included?

Just contact Joern at [EMAIL PROTECTED], and (afaik) sending your
collection summary (meteorite names and weights) will be all that is
needed to get an entry with the next update.

Hi Listees & Meteorite People,

I've created a poll for gathering some very important information.
This information is vital in determining the course of action and
direction the Meteorite Wiki website will take. The Poll is located on
the meteorite blog website but is strictly for gathering information
on the Meteorite Wiki.

What Do You Want In A Meteorite Website?
Go here to Vote: www.meteoriteblog.com
Poll is located in the sidebar of the site

1 Question, 20 Answers and percentage based results. You are more than
welcome to choose more than one answer and in fact are encouraged to
do so. Choose the answers that best fit what YOU would like to see in
a meteorite website.

If you have something to add please feel free to send me an email with

Please take part in the poll, the more information we compile the
