[meteorite-list] TISSINT METEORITE FOR SALE

2018-04-18 Thread DAN via Meteorite-list
Good day collectors, I am offering a pristine Tissint Martian shergottite for
sale. This is a mostly fusion crusted complete specimen weighing 3.37
grams.Dimensions: 15 mm x 12 mm x12 mm.
One side apparently fractured in flight, and very lightly partially recrusted,
exposing the interior along a 5 mm x 15 mm window which clearly shows 2 melt
fractures. It is along these melt fractures that researchers have found organic
molecules which were deposited by Martian ground water.
$2,700; other offers will be considered. For further information and images,
contact sharpieflight@yahoo.
(Authenticity can be verified at Blaine Reed meteorites. )
Have an impactful day,DAN

[meteorite-list] TISSINT EJECTION AGE MAY ONLY BE 5 YEARS!

2012-03-30 Thread Graham Ensor
Hi All,

Spent a great day yesterday in London with 6 other BIMS members
viewing the Lake House and Danebury meteorites at the Royal society
and at the NHM viewing lots of goodies behind the scenes. One thing we
were told is that there are indications through current research that
Tissint may have been ejected from Mars a very short time
agoperhaps only 5 years agoformation age around 500 million
years anyone else heard anything along those lines?quite
something if it was still on Mars 5 years agoeven more of a thrill
holding a sample.

If anyone has seen a research paper or similar on this than please share.

Tissint? Yes, it tis! Certainly tis about Tissint!

While hunting around for data for my next contribution to 'Meteorite
magazine', I came across this video of our newest brother from Mars.

Narrated by Caroline Smith, the 'Keeper of the Meteorites' at the
British Museum, it's worth a look, as is the surrounding website.

http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/space/meteorites-dust/meteorites-from-moon-mars/index.html

And if there's anyone on this list not yet subscribing to the journal
'Meteorite'. well, what are you waiting for?

Appearing in the May issue, my next feature in two parts is entitled,
"The Rise of the Raj and the Fall of Shergotty". I am the luckiest guy
around today because mood-setting illustrations to accompany my
articles will be drawn by our beloved Dorothy Norton.

"The Rise of the Raj and the Fall of Shergotty" is my final work on
the SNC Mars meteorites, having covered Chassigny and Nakhla for
Meteorite in the past starting in 1998 . If you found those features
provocative, intriguing and educational, with these next articles
covering the FIRST EVER complete description of the circumstances of
the 1865 fall of Shergotty I will be telling a story for the ages you
will not want to miss... I promise.

The Nakhla Dog will soon have company among the legends of meteorites.

Re: [meteorite-list] Tissint and IOM on KNME-PBS

2012-02-18 Thread Carl Agee
Hi MikeG,

Not a stupid question at all. As far as I know anyone can register to
attend the LPSC. It is not by invitation only, but there is a fee for
registration, here is the meeting webpage:

http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2012/

There are usually something like 2000 papers presented as talks or
posters during the week.

Of course the sessions tend to be technical, but some are fairly
accessible, I often just drop in on session that is far outside my
field out of curiosity and to learn something new. I would guess that
the Tuesday and Thursday evening poster sessions would be great
browsing for a meteorite/planetary science enthusiast.

Re: [meteorite-list] Tissint and IOM on KNME-PBS

2012-02-18 Thread Carl Agee
Hi Shaw & All:

The most recent findings will be reported at the Lunar and Planetary
Science Conference, next month in Houston, by Irving et al. Here is
the link to the session "New Martian Meteorites and New Perspectives
on Old Favorites":
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2012/pdf/sess204.pdf

It is still is early days. In the PBS segment they show some SEM
images that we made of Tissint in our first exploratory electron
microprobe session. Something that really impressed me with this
meteorite are the very nice melt pools scattered throughout. These are
not shocked maskelynite glass (that's there too), but true glass melt
pockets decorated with very fine quench crystal boundaries. May or may
not be formed by shock. Obviously the glass will be a target for
studies of martian volatile compounds. The organics are also being
studied.

At this point the main attraction is the freshness of Tissint. This is
particularly important because it makes it easier to interpret the
data as a true witness of martian surface processes, not clouded by
terrestrial contamination. Stay tuned..

Carl

[meteorite-list] Tissint Donation

2012-02-08 Thread David R Childs

Dear All,

Just watched a piece on The BBC News about the donation.
It was shown being placed in an MRI Scanner, searching for possible trapped
gasses.

Also shown was an auctioneer from one of the big houses in The UK. He was
asked to value it, but didn't actually do it, instead said that meteorites
can fetch upwards of £20,00O, and the Lunar piece they sold a year ago went
for nearly a quarter of a Million!

Regards

David R Childs

[meteorite-list] Tissint and a Non-related Time Capsule

2012-01-27 Thread Gary K. Foote
Every photo of Tissint I've seen in photos it is unique in so many ways.
Freshness, flowlines, orientations, depply sculpted backsides... Other
than its freshness is there a particular reason for its unique look?

This is just one of many and they are all spectacular in so many ways.

BTW - Thanks to EVERYONE for sharing your photos and commentaries and
analyses to this list. In that same spirit of sharing - CJ and I were
just given a 24 volume 1957 library copy Encyclopedia Brittanica with 1958
update book, and... Wow! What a time capsule! She's going to be sharing
a lot of its contents to a site dedicated to old books. We'll keep
everyone posted.

First up to be photographed and linked will be, of course, meteorites and
related topics.

Re: [meteorite-list] TISSINT OFFER TO RESEARCHERS / Re: Chris Herd talking about the Tissint meteorite - NPR 'Science Friday'

2012-01-24 Thread Carl Agee
PS: I think a research discount for Tissint like what Darryl proposed
is a welcome gesture. Some research groups want to have their own
permanent specimens, substantial in quantity, and archival. In such
cases it makes sense to purchase. When we loan material it is exactly
that, on loan, and so must be returned with in 6 months to a year.
Also, if you are performing destructive analyses of substantial
quantities it's probably not good form to rely on loaned material, but
to purchase your own as part of the research overhead.

Thanks,

Carl

[meteorite-list] TISSINT OFFER TO RESEARCHERS / Re: Chris Herd talking about the Tissint meteorite - NPR 'Science Friday'

2012-01-24 Thread Carl Agee
The Institute of Meteoritics has already distributed samples of our
Tissint material to researchers at the Carnegie Institution for
"organics" studies and to the Univ. of Tuebingen for magnetics
measurements. That is one of the main goals of our Meteorite Museum --
to loan researchers our meteorites. The other main goals are to
display meteorites for the public and preserve the collection for
posterity. Luckily, we are fortunate to be able to do all three of
these functions with our recent Tissint acquisition!

Hi,

For those who inquired and those who have wondered, Chris Herd picked up the
58g specimen of Tissint of which he spoke on NPR from me.

In the same spirit of my $325/g offer to Chris, let me now extend a similar
offer to members of the Meteoritical Society who are either PhDs or doctoral
students: I've set aside another 75g at $325/g should you desire samples of
Tissint exclusively for research purposes.

Please contact me off-list.

All the best / Darryl

[meteorite-list] Tissint - Density Measurements - UCF

2012-01-19 Thread Greg Hupé

Hello Martian Fans,

Yesterday I drove up to the University of Central Florida (UCF), Orlando,
with the 91.3g Tissint individual to have some density measurements
performed by Dr. Dan Britt.

Dr. Britt using tiny glass beads as the medium to determine the bulk density
measurement for this sample from the Tissint Martian meteorite. The stone is
submersed in the cup containing glass beads sitting on the vibrator to allow
the beads to fill all the surface voids and contours. The vibrator in run
for five seconds for each measurement.

http://www.lunarrock.com/NewMartian/TissintDensityMeasurement1.jpg

Dr. Britt holding the 91.3g stone next to the pycnometer that utilizes
helium as the medium for density measurement.

http://www.lunarrock.com/NewMartian/TissintDensityMeasurement2.jpg

Tissint stone in the removable chamber that will be inserted and sealed into
the pycnometer for measurements.

http://www.lunarrock.com/NewMartian/TissintDensityMeasurement3.jpg

It takes approximately 1 - 1.5 hours to do both the glass bead and helium
methods to measure a sample. There are several repetitive steps needed to
get enough measurements to get an overall average density for the meteorite.

Best Regards,
Greg

G'Day Michael, Michael and whoever has now and List

What an incredible day. That post by Jim Wooddell blew me away and then
just to up the ante. Michael J. posts one of the most amazing images of
an awesome Martian.
I know you replied Michael F. that it's not yours anymore, but it
reminded me of one other meteorite that I don't have which I have always
wanted because of the jet black, glassy fusion crust, Puerto Lapice.

Thank you very much for such a delightful day of images.

If I were to tell my non-meteorite friends that someone (well, most of us,
especially me!) would actually have that shiney rock than a Ferrari, they'd
laugh and would never understand.

I wouldn't blink at the opportunity. Mike, congrats on having your
priorities in line.

I spent the day realizing that I would trade my entire collection for a
stellar crusted piece of Tissint. (Well, I may have to keep a few!)

Unfortunately, I've made the decision to forego the expense to visit
Tucson...fortunately, it is to aquire such a specimen Serious!

2012-01-17 Thread geohiggins
Meteorite fell 38km from tata and 61km from tissint I was there and have exact
gps data. The name should be tata or tanzarou not tissint. The river where the
meteorites are found called Oued Bourabine.
