[meteorite-list] THANKS Meteorite List - Source for Book!
Yes, I lurk. But the times I contribute a naïve notion or question to this bunch, I am met with half a dozen very kind personal messages off-list from around the world and I value some resultant friends. And I've scoured the Arizona high desert for "Keepers" with several of you... I also search out Listers yearly at the Tucson show and have a growing meteorite collection...but I want to thank the many contributors to this most excellent assemblage of impassioned professionals. I must say, I am partial to NASA...I don't care what the topic...and I eat up the photographs to the point of getting hooked on astrophotography and then graphically creating my mind's image of volcanoes on Jupiter's moon's, Einstein's time dilations, binary-system black holes, asteroids, solar events, comets, star-fields and my book's End of Days scenario at the hands of...well... I've lost track of who in the list exactly put the climax of my book into my head...but thanks to you all. I heard last night that my book is available in print, in all formats as a color eBook ($3.95 or for the list $.99 pre-order till 2014), and in "3-D" Stereo AudioBook form (My AudioBook is free on Amazon so save 20 bucks). It is a historic WWII narrative based on a year and a half's research and study of Freedom of Information Act documents...and an entire chapter is based on enlightenment and inspiration from this list. My uncle was an astonishing hero in the retaking of the Philippines and on Luzon he withstood the last, great Banzai Charge of the war over his 30 caliber "Bouncing Betty" machine gun position. He was injured and actually turned down the Silver Star. MacArthur then made him his personal bodyguard for 6 years during the Japanese Occupation after we dropped the bombs. You can imagine my aggressive research once I found that during that time, General Douglas MacArthur had not only had a personal sighting, but had been tasked by FDR to answer the growing question...the hundreds of headlines and thousands of reports by people around the world reporting Unidentified Flying Objects. In all theaters of the war...and on land, sea and in the air, the famed "Foo Fighters" were continually harassing operations on all sides. Roosevelt and Gen. Marshall were convinced we were being invaded by aliens! "MacArthur and the UFOs" traces family stories, FOIA documents, statements by multiple NASA astronauts, presidents and broadcasters...and explores the 20,000 page UFO file Mac created with his action group - the Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit of the United States Army...in truth, this group could be called the original Men in Black...they existed... I impersonate Kennedy, Roosevelt and MacArthur in this 2-minute video trailer for the book... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jli1e45acaA I've won multiple national Emmys, CLIOs, Addys, and the New York Film Festival Gold. I'll have two AudioBooks up for Grammys in 2014. So why tackle this topic, shrouded in mystery and lacking tangible evidence?? When I found the following MacArthur statement in a 1955 graduation speech to West Point, I was compelled to know more: "You now face a new world, a world of change. We speak in strange terms, of harnessing the cosmic energy, of ultimate conflict between a united human race and the sinister forces of some other planetary galaxy. The nations of the world will have to unite, for the next war will be an interplanetary war. The nations of the earth must someday make a common front against attack by people from other planets." [meteorite-list] Thanks Meteorite Friends
Aloha Meteorite friends, I am sending this message on behalf of my friend Doug: Dear List, Today I yearn for that unique meteorite creating event; to herald the passage and swap its cosmic matter from the heavens for the ascent of my beloved to the Great Next. I'm imagining that the life-giving air burnishes some cold stones that were already hand-picked to come to rest and bring happiness our Earth below. May they proudly ignite the trails of tears to bring the spiritual familiarity and comfort that accompanies any specially delivered message from whence in this vast universe, so cold at moments like these, that we all shall eventually join with and seed ourselves. The Sunset wasn't exactly how I, or any of my loved ones, would have feared, and it has exacted a physical toll which I hope is only temporary after over three years without a single moment's respite. My thoughts are to get over this and get back in the saddle. There are years of catching up to do so any friendly messages are warmly welcome now as I try. Kindest wishes Doug. Hi Paul - Pretty much nuts on, but I my estimate is that it not was the "receding ice sheet" that led to the sedimentary deposits - more likely it was a massive freshwater discharge. Given the fishing in the area, and Canada's other oil deposits, it will be interesting to watch how the oil around this one is handled - We'll see. Greetings all. I was the guy who caught the event on the Sandia Camera. I see a lot of optical and radar analysis, and excitement has followed. Good luck on the hunt. If you find anything we're very interested in what and where it was found so we can validate some of the methods. Would love to catch you at dinner some evening, if able? Yesterday was a perfect meteorite hunting day, with beautiful, short-sleeve weather and very nice landowners who graciously let us hunt every piece of land we asked about. Not one turn down. One landowner gave us permission to hunt her pasture, but warned us of the 3 horses on it, saying she wouldn't want them to kick us ( we wouldn't have wanted them too, either ;-) We told her we would keep or eyes on them ( but we really thought they wouldn't be a problem.) We were wrong. As we started our hunt, on the FAR side of the pasture from them, they all 3 came charging over toward us. They were rearing their heads up and down, running quickly right up next to us off-and-on again and again, and even kicking up their hind legs very close to us. Fortunately, since we had just started our hunt, we were still close to the fence line, so we were able to quickly make our way to a gate and scramble over it out of the pasture. The horses kept up their threatening charges and kicking as we made our way down the length of the fence to our car. If we had stayed in the pasture, I do believe they would have ended up kicking us. We awoke to very different weather conditions this morning. Completely cloudy skies, a very light and brief mist/drizzle, and worst of all, a BITTER cold North wind. The air temp was 41 F, but the wind chill had to be near freezing. The GREAT majority of fields in the area, perhaps 70-90%(???), are covered in 6-inch tall winter wheat. That was very disappointing to see, and wiped out a huge portion of any potential strewnfield. To all those still in the area giving it their all, the absolute BEST of luck in finding pieces! Hi Greg, List, I echo that thanks, and kudos to the Meteorite Men, Geoff and Steve, and the Science Channel for all their hard work! Many people new and great people have been introduced into this wonderful world of meteorite hunting collecting and science. This "little" world ain't so little anymore. What a great story Greg! Thanks for sharing. ;) Eric On 11/29/2010 3:36 PM, Thunder Stone wrote: Hi List: I just wanted to point out something really neat that is happening as a result of the "Meteorite Men" TV show. For the last 4 or or 5 years I have been collecting meteorites and have met many nice and interesting people during my ventures. It's always so rewarding to tell my friends all about meteorites. Well now with the show on TV... I have be getting the responses like "I saw this show about meteorites and I thought of you." How cool is that. Now many of my friends, some of whom I have not seen for many many years, think about me when they see the show. What a cool hobby, I'm so glad I got into it. [meteorite-list] Thanks to the Meteorite Men
Hi List: I just wanted to point out something really neat that is happening as a result of the "Meteorite Men" TV show. For the last 4 or or 5 years I have been collecting meteorites and have met many nice and interesting people during my ventures. Also, I have been telling many old friends of my fascinating new hobby; many are interested and often are surprised they can be found. Also, my father-in-law loves it as well, and over the holidays we watched it together. So my many thanks to the Geoff and Steve for producing such a wonderful show - keep it up. Top stuff Rob...and a very cool move Michael! Dave www.fallingrocks.com -Original Message- From: meteorite-list-boun...@meteoritecentral.com [mailto:meteorite-list-boun...@meteoritecentral.com] On Behalf Of Matson, Robert D. Sent: Monday, May 17, 2010 4:20 PM To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Subject: [meteorite-list] Thanks, Michael! Hi All, Just wanted to let everyone know that I received a VERY nice (overwhelming, really) package from Michael Cottingham in today's mail. In it were copies of four separate Dodgeville and Platteville papers containing stories about the big fall in Livingston/Mifflin -- mementos that I wish I had taken the time to chase down while I was there a few weeks ago. But the BIG surprise in the package was a very generous 4+ gram slice from Michael's latest 105.1-gram find there a little over a week ago! I don't think Michael has discussed this discovery on the list yet, so I'll leave the details of that story for him to share. But I will say that it took a bit of a leap of faith on his, Greg Hupe's, and Eric Wichman's parts to search in an area I recommended to them (based on radar), given that it was over 3 miles from the nearest prior find. (Psychologically, it is much easier to hunt with confidence when you are searching an area surrounded by other known finds.) Bottom line is that this find ended up being a significant strewn field extender, and I'm thankful to Michael, Greg and Eric for diverting valuable time they could have spent in more productive areas in an attempt to validate my interpretation of the NEXRAD data. I am quite relieved that their efforts were not in vain! Their success alone was most gratifying from a theoretical analysis standpoint; to actually be sent a slice from that find was (in the words of MasterCard) ... priceless. Hi Rob, Thanks for the mention, great credit should be given to Michael for his work on this find and extending the field. I'm personally grateful for the sharing of the data Rob. Thank you, it will be reciprocated in kind now and in future hunts for sure! It was a pleasure meeting and hunting with you as well as sharing one of my meteorite find moments with you which happens a few days before Michael's great find which I will not spoil by giving away any juicy details. ;) Congrats go out to Michael for his 105.1g find, and I want to thank him and Greg for a great hunt. [meteorite-list] Thanks for the congratulations
Thanks to all the list members who sent congratulations. Wow! What a rush it is to see that first meteorite ever, especially when it's a fresh fall. After striking out (other than Mike's generous gift of one if his stones) on my one day of looking in West, Texas, I flew out here with some trepidation. I expected to enjoy the thrill of the hunt and to see some pretty countryside but to come away empty handed. I was truly lucky. As Greg pointed out the stones seem to be far more sparse than they were in West. I can't thank Mike Farmer enough for his help. He encouraged me when I expressed the crazy idea of coming out in the face of reports of the difficulty of hunting this fall and introduced me to a site where stones had been found and where I could pay a fee to search. [meteorite-list] Thanks for the congrats! Lots of Fun!
Hello Everyone, Thank you everyone for your wonderful congrats! We all thought that with such a huge fireball that the WI event would have produced an equal amount of meteorites as Buzzard Coulee, boy were we wrong. The meteorites are far and few between. The terrain is not difficult, but the amount of miles hiked per recovery are a lot. The weather has been awesome, along with the locals with warm hearts and welcoming smiles, but it looks like the show will be dampened starting Thursday night due to a rainy forecast, time to change my flights once more... I will send more personalized emails once I return home within a week, I am borrowing a laptop computer that I am not used to so replying is painfully slow, along with no cell service for my out-dated phone is very frustrating! Hi listees and all my philosopher friends, I'm really philosophied out right now. My brain hurts from thinking too much. I'd like to send out a BIG THANK YOU to all of you who've given their feedback on both my alien questions, and the new Spacifieds.com website which was created with you guys in mind. As kind of an even larger thank you I wanted to further the fast growth of the site by offering something I know all you dealers out there will appreciate very much. You buyers, collectors and lurkers should check it out too... A FREE LINK! I want to give you a free link on the Spacifieds.com blogroll. The site is growing at a rapid rate, and everyone knows the more items listed the more buyers, collectors and visitors it will garner. All you have to do is post free ad listings for your items for sale or trade. Post 10 minimum listings, preferably 20 or more, but 10 is good, and I'll put a link to your site on the blogroll. This is a permanent link! It is displayed on every page of the website in the right sidebar and gives you great exposure! You can view the blogroll here: http://www.spacifieds.com I've also added some features and have taken the advice you guys have been so kind to provide via private emails. I've adjusted the look and feel somewhat too. One very cool feature I've added is an "Auto-Tweet". Now every ad posted to Spacifieds.com gets posted to my Twitter page AUTOMATICALLY! It also provides a DIRECT link back to your ad listing. This means your ad listings gets a HUGE boost of traffic and visits for every ad listed, not just your ad. The more ads you post , the more visitors will automatically visit the site! You don't have to do anything other than post your ad listing to get traffic to your ad. In addition I've added a VERY powerful marketing tool to each ad listing. Each new ad listing posted now has a "ReTweet" button. This allows site visitors to Tweet directly to their Twitter accounts automatically without having to fill out any forms. It only takes two clicks and your ad is seen by hundreds and thousands of visitors depending on who Tweets your ad. This feature alone is hugely powerful word of mouth advertising. You can even ReTweet your own ad listings if you are on Twitter too. Let's keep this growth moving! There's over 30+ meteorite ad listings already from a number of very reputable dealers, check it... List it. It's free and it's easy. Now go post your free listings... Thanks everyone... Regards, Eric Wichman Meteorites USA www.spacifieds.com P.S. Dear Listees: I want to send a big thank you to all our US Meteorite List members who tuned in for the "Meteorite Men" premiere on Sunday, and especially those of you who wrote to us with your encouraging comments afterwards. I forwarded some of them (in confidence) to our production company and I owe a number of you personal replies, which I am trying to work through in a timely manner : ) We received good news from the network. "Meteorite Men" was the top rated show on Science Channel on Sunday and the overall ratings were very good -- double what the network expected. The show will be repeated on May 25 at 5 pm, on Science Channel and Science Channel HD. Steve and I appreciate the terrific support we've received from so many of our friends and colleagues over the past year and half, while "Meteorite Men" made the long journey from an idea on a piece of paper to a big-budget HD documentary. Personal special thanks from me to Paul Harris, Caroline Palmer, Dr. Hobart King, Larry and Nancy Lebofsky, Sonny Clary, Dr. Art Ehlmann, Maria Haas, Norbert Classen, Leigh Anne DelRay, Anne Black, Suzanne and Lisa Morrison, and Michael Johnson, and everyone else who helped us along the way, and also to our guest stars Dr. Meenakshi Wadhwa and Dr. Laurence Garvie at ASU. Some really interesting posts on the M-List over the past week. Lots of good reading, and I definitely need to comment back on a few things. How about that fearless McCartney Taylor and the beehive! Apologies if this is a repeat posting, I thought I sent one earlier today but it seems to be missing. Maybe the original will turn up later. Many thanks to those who have replied to my mail and as so often, I was not in full posession of the facts. In light of that, I'm delighted I to find I didn't get chewed out by anyone (maybe they're all too busy collecting rocks) Science's share is destined to be fulfilled and it appears that things happen quicker than I gave credit for when there are plenty of people on hand. I remain in respected and envious awe of those who go out and do the hard work, without whom science would get precious little and I include those who brave Morocco and the perils that entails to bring us NWAs. I'm still a little concerned at "how it may look" to the general public. I'm sure a journalist wouldn't wait to gather the facts before putting his opinion out to the world but "too soon" is on an extreme sliding scale depending on the bias of those with an opinion. G'Day Steve and List I would not worry about the 1% who have been negative towards your generosity. I for one, am very appreciative for what you have given me and I know there is alot of people out there that are also thankful for your kindness. You've filled a few holes in their collections, ones that possibly they could not have afford to purchase. You've really shown compassion to alot of collectors. So to you, a Big THANK YOU!!! [meteorite-list] Thanks
Hello Everyone, Just wanted to thank everyone who sent in meteorites for the boy I know. There were some wonderful specimens from NWA 869 and Canyon Diablo to Odessa to Two-Dot, to name just a few off the top of my head. I will write up descriptions of the specimens this weekend and present them to him next week. I will be sure that he knows of the generosity of the meteorite community for making these donations and I am sure he will love them and they will strengthen his interest in astronomy and space sciences. Thanks again, everyone. -Walter Branch __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

To the list, Thanks for the info concerning metal detectors. I think that I'll go with the Gold Bug 2. Now, if you'd bear with me, I have a few more questions. Are there any "used" Gold Bug 2 detectors available? I'm retired from a cell to cell ministry at San Quentin Prison through The Salvation Army. I loved my work, but it didn't pay a bunch. I figure the people on this forum would know about the availability of used detectors, if anybody would. Also, I'm curious as to why my posts take about 24 hours to show up on the forum? Is this normal? Does it take this long for the other participants here to see their posts? Thanks again for your help. [meteorite-list] Thanks !
Dear List, Finally I'm home! It's been a long "Tucson" for me, all very enjoyable. Please take a moment to hear me rant -or more appropriately: rave- about the meteorite folks who colored my world in Arizona and beyond. First, in order of meeting, is Jim Kriegh with whom I feel privileged to have shared an unexpected couple hours of fine conversation with and appreciated his suggestions and observations. I am looking forward to the day I can tag along in the field with you, Jim. Shortly later, I met 'Twink' and kind meteorite spouse Larry whose reservoirs of kindness never ran dry in the most challenging situations. I thank my lucky star to have you as friends and frankly couldn't have done anything besides a basic Tucson without your help. I am sure that I am talking for many a meteorhound when I also say the meteorite cake colors golden our Tucson experience like the children looking forward to the Rosca de Reyes (Pan de Reyes: The round glazed candy-fruited sweetbread) in Mexico on Epiphany: http://www.worldonaplate.org/world_on_a_plate/2007/01/rosca_de_reyes.html To The Classic Chladnis, Andi, Stefan, and Martin were the kindest folks, and once wound up and rolling, proved to be a barrel full of meteorites, moons and loons, not to mention knowledge, conversation, food and mead... What a fun gang, and place to escape the high pressure sales joints, thanks friends - I hope you are able to attend next year! Martin, have you yet recovered from the alleged S. American plague? Take two Hasparos and call me in the morning under Appley Bridge and I promise you'll be cured. Next, I met up with "Rusty" Bill Mason in the rear of Heorot's Hall of Paleoenterologists. Bill has a delightful sense of humor and is always ready to help you recover your irons wherever you might have put them, gratis and with a big smile. What more could one ask of such a experimented practitioner of non-petreous proto-planet preservation? I hope he never closes the gates to huddled meteoritical masses, whether they be immersed in the mainstream or relegated as poor plum puddinged deserted individuals. OK, next in line was the room with the nicest duo that has put up with meteorites all these years. That would be Blaine and his every sympathetic brother Blake Reed, plus the caravan of mirth that you can count on finding there this time including the likes of Blake's attractive and pleasant girlfriend, plus the likes of AL and Mike Mtz who I saw this time there. Thanks for my wonderful wine glass which I am pleased to have cared for all the way home, over a few mountains, valleys, wet lakes, urban forests and numerous army check points. Whenever I am in the presence of the Reed's, truly, I am filled with admiration. Blaine has put up with the ups and downs of the "Business" like no other, never sacrificing his smile, genuine generosity and helpfulness, and sage advice, such as "Always leave something attractive on the table for buyers." Ah ... a phrase so easily said by many but so hard to find when you need it...but friends of Blaine will know exactly what I mean. Rumor was that the IMCA was to have a dinner, so upon the encouragement of several members, I decided to crash the party which was at La Fuente restaurante. Here I was fortunate to meet up with the kind and openly jovial Jensens, cladistic Chladnis', oh lala Anne B., the enchanting Maria Haas and the nice guy (name?) sitting to her right, and Mark Bostick, Greg Hupe and many others further from my seat. That evening for me, though, my heart was won by Maria Haas, as it was the first time I met her in person and realized just how honest and caring of a person she is - always helping others, and as we saw leading an effort to help Walter Branch and family from the meteorite community. Just listening to Maria's caring comments had me realize how lucky I am to be in the same virtual community as she. Good luck Maria in Holbrook I wished ... knowing I would not be able to arrive there and share the hunt until she was about to leave. Speaking of Maria I also met the always pleasant Latin superstore jefe Eduardo a few times who was clearly having a great time. Such a contagious smile! He mentioned he wanted to go to Holbrook so I invited him to come along with me a few days later. He politely declined in favor of holding out until Maria invited him again. It went down something like this: Why would I want to go with you, when I could go with (harps play theme from West Side Story) MARIA. Actually there was a lot of sense to Eduardo's words. I wouldn't want to go with me either - if I could go with Maria. So next time I'll check into the possibility of ditching myself and going with Maria instead. Say it loud Eduardo and there's Music Playing! Hope you enjoyed your royal suites hotel with Jacuzzi and all, btw. Sure beat the crap out of my accommodations but I'm not complaining. Also, thanks for the lessons southern-South American style on the regional

Hi Phil, Hi Jan, Hi List, So our voice Martin is already in holyday, you will have to take pot-luck with me. We have to say thank you to all List members who take part at the name finding process for the relative new but already legendary Chladni Cases. Yes, Chladni Case is the name we choose between over 100 proposals, we wanted to keep it A.S.S.(Absolute Stupid Simple). Marry Christmas and a happy new year to all of you, yes I mean all, no exceptions, seems I have my good day today. [meteorite-list] thanks!
Hi everybody, I'd like to thank everyone for the really positive response to the www specialistauctions.com site and especially to those who have already started listing! So, an unashamed plug - USE IT!! I don't care if no one buys my stuff - I just put some stuff up there to help to populate an empty space! But I see now that already one of you has started putting stuff up! I'll put some more stuff on but I don't have a lot to sell to be honest. .. the listing is free - I think they take 3% of the end price, and no, I have NO interests in this site other than being asked to be a mod for it! The IMCA will hopefully soon have a link on it - I have sent the site administrators some code linking to it Help me to kick eBay's ass - even though eBay has been good to some of us sometimes (I keep going back to the 29g veiny PV specimen I got for $175.. sorry!) Much appreciated, and the lack of flame was too! best from a drizzly England Dave IMCA #0092 Sec.BIMS www.bimsociety.org __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
