Hello all, My wife and I are with Shawn. Hugh Livingston, founder of
Livingston, WI.
was my wife's Great Great Grandfather. That will also make it easier for me to
justify
a better purchase of this fall :-)
Dennis

P.S. Again, I want to thank Rolene Barton for all the Livingston Cemetery
photos.
Kathleen was so pleased and a big thanks from her too.

named/classified! Things have been kinda slow over the past couple of
weeks from the US into Canada..

There are many factors considered in naming a meteorite. It is rare for
the NomCom to pick its own name out of the blue. It usually serves as
more of a review panel than anything else. Some consideration is given to
the finder, to the first person to describe the meteorite, to commercial
usage, to the distribution of find locations, etc. In this case, I don't
know what will happen. If there has been contact with the committee, I
don't know about it yet and no proposals are on the table at this time.
But I know the classification has been done.

Hi Michael and all,

Actually you are wrong. Obviously the original submitter gets a say or
else how do they choose the name?! And yes... the Nom Com gets the final

the submitting party. I recommend you read Jeff Grossman's post regarding
West/Ash Creek:

Hi Jeff and all,
My understanding is that the naming of all meteorites is at
the sole discretion of the Nomenclature committee of the
Meteoritical Society. The original finder is irrelevant. I believe
anyone is free to suggest a name, but my experience is that such
suggestions carry little, if any, weight.
However, the list is fortunate in having a former member
Of the Nomenclature Committee, Jeff Grossman as a member
Of the list. He would most certainly know better than any of
Us the specifics involved in naming a new fall.

Anyhow, I thought it was generally the first person submitting the
classification/meteorite who got the rights (within reason).

Greetings,

It will be called what the Nomenclature Committee decides to name it
as
naming has always been done in the past. Dr. Jeff Grossman made
mention
the name Livingston would probably not be used due to conflict with
other

Hello Listers,

I think the name of the meteorite should be Livingston because wasnt
that

the first place a meteorite was found and the media has been talking
about that town. Plus it seems like that was ground zero the first
couple

of days when everyone rushed into WI.

You all know that we gotta call it the Livingston strewn field. In
fact
we should start a new nameing process where all meteorites that are

a strewn field should have a large S after it. Regardless of the

[meteorite-list] WI Meteorite Name?

2010-05-09 Thread Shawn Alan
Hello Listers,

Here is my guess from the Livingston WI meteorite fall. I would say it might be
a H4 breccia meteorite. What I have noticed from the samples is that there are
two distinctive colors from the matrix within the meteorite. On one side the
matrix is a medium gray and on the other side the matrix is a light tan to
almost off white color depending on the lighting conditions.

Lets talk about the dark matrix side first. What I noticed is that the
chondrules on this side seem to be more defined and prevalent through out the
matrix. The visibility of the iron through the matrix seem uniform in
a equilibrated state. When I ran a magnet on that side, the pull seemed good
but not as strong as I would like if it would be with a H classification
meteorite, but I think that the gray matrix seems to be less included with iron
as opposed to the light tan colored matrix.

What I noticed with the light tan matrix is that the chondrules are less
visible due to the color of the matrix, but I did notice that there were dark
colored chondrules through out the matrix. Also what I noticed about the light
tan side is that the iron to chondrule ratio seemed to be higher on the iron
side. However, the iron displacement through out the matrix seemed to be less
equilibrated compared to the gray matrix side where it was more uniformed
throughout the matrix but the iron was more abundent.

This can be further seen at this link from my flicker account
http://www.flickr.com/photos/48262...@n03/4594050372/ At close inspection of
the meteorite in the lower left part of the meteorite is a big iron chunk and
when I took a magnet to that side I got a very strong pull to it, which felt
somewhat like an iron meteorite would feel like. It seems to me from doing
these elementary observations and experiments that the light tan side seems to
have more iron then the gray side which could suggest that this meteorite is
definitely a brecciated meteorite.

I wonder if this meteorite could be classified as a H/L 4 breccia meteorite?

I was told by a guy who has been involved, in sorts, in some of the
classification that it is not an H, he said that was all he can tell me. Maybe
that helps. I cant say who he is, but I can say I do believe what he said. I
thought it was an H, then he promised me its not an H, so now I dont know,
probably an L5 or L6 equalibriated breccia.
When it has been published I will get some good documentation on the
classification.

It is a beautiful breccia, but we're still curious as to class. L6 is
very different than H5, and this meteorite "sticks" to a magnet like an
H. There are people who are eager to see if they guess right. The fact
that this meteorite is so gorgeously brecciated is wonderfully more
exciting than an "ordinary" chondrite if you get my meaning.

There are many factors considered in naming a meteorite. It is rare for the
NomCom to pick its own name out of the blue. It usually serves as more of a
review panel than anything else. Some consideration is given to the finder, to
the first person to describe the meteorite, to commercial usage, to the
distribution of find locations, etc. In this case, I don't know what will
happen. If there has been contact with the committee, I don't know about it
yet and no proposals are on the table at this time. But I know the
classification has been done.

Re: [meteorite-list] WI Meteorite Name?

2010-05-09 Thread Jeff Grossman
Is there really much to be anxious about? I mean we've all known since
the first images that it's some kind of equilibrated ordinary
chondrite. How good could the classification be? Whether it's an L6,
H5, H6, or L5 (the four most probable groups in decreasing order, with N
falls = 259, 165, 90, and 75, respectively) or whatever, the great thing
about this meteorite is that it is a beautiful breccia.

You all know that we gotta call it the Livingston strewn field.
In fact
we should start a new nameing process where all meteorites that
are from
a strewn field should have a large S after it. Regardless of the

the rock.

named Livingston (Montana) and Livingston (Tennessee).

You all know that we gotta call it the Livingston strewn field. In
fact
we should start a new nameing process where all meteorites that are
from
a strewn field should have a large S after it. Regardless of the name
of

the rock.

Re: [meteorite-list] WI Meteorite Name?

2010-05-08 Thread Michael Blood
Hi Jeff and all,
My understanding is that the naming of all meteorites is at
the sole discretion of the Nomenclature committee of the
Meteoritical Society. The original finder is irrelevant. I believe
anyone is free to suggest a name, but my experience is that such
suggestions carry little, if any, weight.
However, the list is fortunate in having a former member
Of the Nomenclature Committee, Jeff Grossman as a member
Of the list. He would most certainly know better than any of
Us the specifics involved in naming a new fall.

Yes, the NomCom has final say but I believe they do listen to what is
spread on this list and elsewhere as well as to what the original
finders have to say. If it falls in there guidelines (whatever those
are) then suggestions spread around may influence what the stone is called.

Pretty sure Buzzard Coulee's name was influenced by the finders and by
this list.

Cheers!

Al,
I was told that Ash Creek was named by Mexico Doug. He recovered the first
specimen at that site and sent it to Dr. Rubin with that as the name.
Nomenclature just approved the name. I have also heard that most people
preferred West. But nobody asked. Is this not true?

[meteorite-list] WI Meteorite Name?

2010-05-07 Thread gmh...@htn.net
Hello All,

After nearly three weeks in the WI strewnfield and talking with many of the
locals, I think it
would be a great idea to have a local vote as to what the residents of the
strewnfield
think "THEY" would like 'Their' meteorite named.

Best regards,
Greg Hupe

[meteorite-list] WI Meteorite Name?

2010-05-06 Thread Greg Hupe

Hello All,

Is there any word yet as to what the Wisconsin meteorite will be
named? I guess I will have to photograph all of the local town signs
to make sure I get the eventual one.

From the WI strewnfield,
Greg Hupe
