Howdy list That brings up a good point - meteorites fall unnoticed all the time, and perhaps the global map of meteorite finds and falls isn't so much a map of meteorites but rather a map of meteorite hunters/researchers! Everyone here seems to have a dot on that map fairly close to their front porch. Cheers, MDF Greetings everyone, Great topic and fun to read the responses. I'm going to rain on the parade and say it should be which 'known one came closest. Which one came closest is sort of a moot point as only 1% of specimens are ever found, so you know there has to be a significant meteorite within a mile or two (probably closer) of just about everyone that has yet to be recovered! No doubt many fell quietly un-noticed. Which known one came closest for me is Plymouth, Indiana. All my best! Re: [meteorite-list] Which one came closest?
Great thread Ann and Jeff. Three answers for me. 1.) The closest to where I grew up (Manila, Arkansas) would be the awesome fall of Paragould, at a mere 23 miles. ( A little before my time, but my dad was 3 years old then.) 2.) The closest to where I live now (Little Rock, Arkansas) would be the find, Slovak, at 44 miles. I had the great honor of meeting the finder, Frank Halijan. He found the 8.22 Kg stone in 1960 or 1961 lying in a fence row, where he suspects his grandfather had thrown it out of the field years earlier. Frank was kind enough to allow me to trade him for a small partial slice of his find. 3.) The one to fall closest to me personally I guess would be the fairly recent New Orleans, LA., at 351 miles. Not nearly close enough! Like all of us, I'm waiting for that about one foot away from me fall! ;-) OK, now how about another question? Would anyone want to describe the most spectacular fireball they ever personally witnessed? I have seen two that were both brighter than the full moon, lighting up the night sky almost as bright as daylight. One of them attracted my attention as I was returning from driving a babysitter home one night, when I first thought I was seeing flashes of lightning. As I leaned forward for a better view of the sky, I was treated to this beautiful, intensely bright fireball. And as an aside, I also saw the re-entry of part of a Soviet rocket in Jan. 1988 (?) that seemed to have lasted near half a minute, and was a fantastic sight. The problem is how to harvest them :-) Cheers, Frank For me, the closest meteor(ite) would be about 58km away, but straight up. Hi, Great thread! Closest to me was BENLD fall, 1938, nine miles to the east of me. It is the first verified car-bonker meteorite. It crashed through the roof of a garage, through the roof of the car parked in the garage, through the back seat and the floor boards, and ended up in a small pit in the dirt floor underneath. This was enough to earn it permanent residency in the Field Museum in Chicago. I have always suspected there were more stones, but Benld is a former coal mining camp that was turned into small town when the mines closed. Its soil is clay and trailings mixed with an truly incredible volume of early 20th century machine junk, scrap iron, and slags. A searcher's nightmare. Leave your detector at home. Sterling K. Re: [meteorite-list] Which one came closest?
On further investigation, I'd have to revise my nearest hit to the Stratford fall. Since it fell on Memorial Day (May 27) in 1974, I was probably back home in New York from college before going off to my summer job in Maine. So it fell 60 km from me. This is the hard part of figuring out this statistic... where were you on a particular date 30 years ago? jeff Dr. Jeffrey N. Re: [meteorite-list] Which one came closest?
Jeff Grossman kindly suggested: Maybe another interesting angle for this discussion is to find the meteorite that fell closest to you personally, not to the place where you now live; i.e., how close did you ever come to being hit? Hi Jeff and all, For me, the closest meteor(ite) would be about 58km away, but straight up. The 1972 (Teton) Fireball flew over my head when I was a young kid fishing in Montana. I still remember the event vividly. Here is a link (but no pic) about the event. I got the 58km figure from this website which mentioned that the fireball's closest point to earth was over Montana (and thus me). http://www.maa.agleia.de/Comet/Other/1972.html And for Bernd, I got the L4 classification of Jerome, Idaho from Meteorites A-Z which in turn cites the 1985 ASU catalog (reference 20). Frankly it looks like L6 material to me, except for some few-and-far-between areas that could pass for type 4 material. Hello everyone, Since the List is very quiet tonight.. I was chatting with an ex-List member earlier today about the newest Colorado meteorite, probably an eucrite. And I noticed that the meteorite that fell (was found) closest to where I am from is also an eucrite: Bouvante. Do you know which meteorite came closest to your backyard? Anne M. Re: [meteorite-list] Which one came closest?
Hello, List, the closest find from my place is the Cranbourne Iron IIICD, TKW 8,600 kg (approx.), found in 1854. That's about 20 Min. down the road. The next, a Fall, 28th Sept. 1969 (1058HRS), is the famous Murchison CM2. And that's just about 1hr away.I have been there quite a few times, but couldn't find any crumbs anymore. :'( Best regards from DOWN-UNDER, Norbert Heike Kammel ROCKS ON FIRE IMCA #3420 %3Fhttp://www.rocksonfire.com%3F Michael Farmer wrote: Yep, mine is Cat Mountain, barely 5 miles from my house. Well, I thought it was the Tanque Verde Wash meteorite from Norton's Rocks From Space, but it's not listed in Meteorites From A to Z or Catalog of Meteorites (not submitted to NomCom?). So the closest would probably Udall Park (an H4), though Greaterville is close also (an L4). Mark, Vail, AZ Do you know which meteorite came closest to your backyard? Anne M. Re: [meteorite-list] Which one came closest?
Do you know which meteorite came closest to your backyard? Probably Allen, Texas (H4) seeing that I live in the town right next to Allen. Another candidate could be McKinney, Texas (L4), which is about 10 miles away. I have specimens of each. But because McKinney was found prior to my town actually being incorporated, and The Book states that it was found eight miles west of McKinney, there's a slight possibility that it may have been found in what is now technically, Frisco, Texas. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
