[meteorite-list] Who's still got their first meteorite?

2007-03-16 Thread Ingo Herkstroeter
Hi List!

I still have my first meteorite a 105.9 gram Sikhote Alin explosion
fragment, bought during the Hamburg mineral fair from Jürgen Nauber in
1996! For me it’s like yesterday, as I came home and my father told me,
that I had spend a lot of money for a grenade or bomb splinter! ;)

Hi Michael and list,
Mine is a 154 gram Canyon Diablo bought in 1988 from
(coughBethanycough) I didn't know about them at the time though so
don't fault me for it! I still have it. Since then I've bought many
from the great folks here on the list, including Mike. I think my
meager collection is now up to about 55 or so specimens, mostly small.

I have my first meteorite, an 80 gram Canyon Diablo
that I bought when I was 15 years old. I purchased it
for $15.00 from the Planetarium at the UofA. (I guess
they are thieves and greedy scum motivated only by
profit)! ;)
I still have it. My second meteorite was a slice of
Forest B purchased from Bob Haag at the Tucson show in
1995. I sold that one long ago, but that meteorite
started the fire that has burned in me ever since.
only months later I was buying and selling meteorites.

I received my first meteorite in 1996, a gift from Dr. William Cassidy, the
Father of the ANSMET (Antarctic Search for Meteorites) Program. It is a 21.2

Living Room along with 78 other meteorites ranging from .001g to 26.5 lbs.
My first find was a 12.4g Gold Basin in 2001 while hunting with Don O'Keeffe.

2007-03-13 Thread mark ford
Hi,

Got my first in about 1986, (an expensive) 'Oddessa' (a measley 2g speck stuck
to a card), came from a famous fossil shop in Lyme Regis in Dorset UK, I
remember also seeing a large Gibeon slice which had a price tag of £1250 pounds
on it! First time I had ever seen a Widmanstatten pattern, that image haunted
me for weeks afterwards! (Prices back then where sooo different to these days,
I tell yer, the newbies don't know they are born!!!). Then I had to wait
another 5 years before I could find any more space rocks to buy, but once the
internet was here, it was full steam ahead. But even now that I have a pretty
good collection I still walk past my meteorite cabinet glance at an etched Iron
slice and think WOW!!!

I think we are very much spoilt for choice these days, It's tempting to hoard
as many meteorites as you can but how many people ever really LOOK and WONDER
at them!?!

I still have my very first meteorite, which I bought on the side of the road

2007-03-12 Thread Moni Waiblinger

Hi All,

I do!!

The first time I ever saw a meteorite was at Chabot's Space and Science
Center in Oakland, California in 2001.

http://www.chabotspace.org/

I was taken in by those beautiful "rocks".
I stayed for a long time just looking at whole stones and slices of iron and
stony meteorites in the display case.

Unbelievable beautiful!
Unbelievable to see rocks from space!!

The next year I received three meteorites as a gift.
A Gold Basin, a Sikhote Alin and one from the Mojave desert.
I still have them all nestled in the chocolate tin can they came in.

The same year I found my very own meteorite from a Nevada dry lake!!!
The meteorite bug has bit me!!!

These meteorites will never leave me and actually all additional finds I
have made since then, which consists of several different types of
meteorites, I am planning on keeping also.

This is what I collect, my own finds!

Happy collecting or hunting or both,

Moni

When I first found out that meteorites were avaiable to be bought online, I
was looking for unique Christmas presents. Consequently, the first dozen
meteorites I bought were given away. Then I realized I should be keeping
some of these goodies for myself, and an obsession was born. One of the
first meteorites I bought intending to keep it for myself was a skeletal
Imilac from Dean, which I still have. In fact, aside from a few I have
given away, I have kept almost every meteorite that has come into my
possession since then, and cherish all of them.

the meteorite in a gem jar velcroed to the front of

them. One niece took hers to class and used it for

Hi List

I also will comment on my first meteorite, but later, but I would like to
know how the recovery of Walter Zeitschel is coming along.
I would like to be sure that our American friends do not forget to send some
greetings his way.
If you don't know Walter Z. then maybe Michael Hoffman could send his report
along, translated maybe, of his visit with him just a month ago.

May you Walter recover quickly,

Hello Listees and Listoids,

Like so many others, I have to find my first own meteorite yet. But the
first

meteorite I purchased was a 15-gram cut + etched Mundrabilla slice from
Walter Zeitschel - see Meteorite Times interview, May 2002, Vol.1, No.2.
Of course, I still have this "Little Australian".

P.S.: If you are interested in more "What was your first meteorite?", the
Meteorite
Times Magazine interviews ("Meteorite People") are an excellent source
because

virtually all of those interviewed were asked this question!

P.S.S.: Speaking of John Blennert's "generous gifts", I would like to add
that one
of my most beautiful Gold Basin meteorites is such a generous gift from
John. He
sent it (two of them,...to be exact!) in May 1999 and it arrived just a few
days
after my 54th birthday anniversary. It weighs a whopping 76 grams, it still
has
traces of its original black fusion crust beneath a thin layer of caliche,
and it is
definitely flight-marked. Another meteorite that will never leave this
collection!

Best wishes,

Bernd
