[meteorite-list] eBay policemen?

2003-10-10 Thread Dave Harris
Hi,
I have to throw in my 2g's worth here - seems that some people on the list
spend too much of their time trawling eBay looking for auctions to criticise
and debunk and publish their 'findings' to the list.
Fine in principle, but we are not here to police eBay - I think that Caveat
Emptor should prevail here. If anyone is naive or stupid enough to spend
thousands of bucks on a so-called 'meteorite' and from a supplier who doesn
t sport the IMCA label then so be it.

Like a lot of people, I find the exceptional ripoffs very funny and I am
quite happy to have my attention drawn to it, but on the whole these
auctions for faux meteorites are all a bit sad, desperate and not really
funny.

Seems to me that every Metlist digest I get now has a look at this eBay
auction... gleefully pointing out some stupid ad - Can I suggest that
perhaps one could spend one's time better employed?

frustratingly frustrated!

2003-10-10 Thread Mark Ferguson
Thanks Dave

I liked the way you phrased that. I have been bypassing some of the posts
for the more interesting and informative ones like Mike's and Atul's. My
minor was anthropology, so I find hearing about India interesting. Its also
a look into what can be expected when one travels for any reason. When one
travels abroad, searching for meteorites or just for pleasure, one really
needs to keep in mind (and an open mind at that) that you will often leave
the western world behind and enter into a civilization that is so
different that its hard to comprehend. I wish I had the fore-sight when I
was younger to search for meteorites when I was overseas. But I enjoyed
those far away lands all the same. This list has opened the world up for me
again and although I do travel and camp a lot here in the northwest, its not
the same as being in a non-western country.
I would like to hear of some of the other major meteorite hunting peoples
exploits in distant lands. Maybe, if they read the list, they will post some
of their travels and enlighten those less fortunate or willing. I find that
as much fun as the meteorites they find and buy.

Mark

2003-10-10 Thread Tom aka James Knudson

Hello List, Please correct me if I am wrong! Please try to be
polite when doing so! : )
I think it hurts us all when some one uses misleading
tactics to sell meteorites. Why do I think that? I will tell you. Ebay is by far
the best, cheapest and easiest place to get meteorites. Lets say someone
new goes on ebay and sees a 2000g Campo described as "HUGE" and looks around and
there is no Campo larger on ebay at the time, the buyer goes back to the auction
and finds a IMCA link, clicks on it and learns what a honest bunch of sellers
IMCA members are. The new buyer even clicks on a few links and does not see a
Campo that big on any of the sites. The buyer will feel like he is getting a
Huge Campo at a great price. He goes back to the auction and uses Buy it now. He
gets it and is thrilled with this Huge Campo.
He gets the "BUG" and goes back to Ebayto look
around. This time he finds a 94lb Campo, but his campo was huge? So what is a
buyer to think? DON"T TRUST THEM DISHONEST IMCA MEMBERS, that whole bunch are
full of #%$(# !
Now what, buy from none IMCA members, OK, and it turns
out to be slag! Oh well, this meteorite collecting thing sucks! You can not
trust anyone!
I do know, one important part of selling, is you need
buyers. If no one wants to buy meteorites, no one can sell them!!!
I live in AZ, and it is still summer here, still in the
high 90's, to hot for GB, so all my meteorite hunting is done on ebay! I am just
telling you all of my hunting adventures. : )
All I am trying to get across is that honesty is the
best policy. If you have a 2k Holbrook, tell people it is huge!!! If you have a
2k campo, say it is nice sized or something, save HUGE for the huge Campos!

Re: [meteorite-list] eBay policemen?

2003-10-10 Thread Dave Harris

Personally and practically, a 2kg meteorite of any type usually I regard as 'huge' mainly because it would have cost me a lot ofmoney - I have been collecting for a few years and I don't have anything approaching 2kg in size, so for me 'huge' is an appropriate adjective!
Also, I would, if Iwere that buyer, look around sosee what else was on offer in order go guesstimate the correct sort of price, and decide that if it is good value and looks good then ok, it may not be a 3/4 ton Otumba as in the NHM (London) but for domestic collections it is pretty substantial. It is all relative!
But I agree with Tom's last statement that theperhaps the seller oughtto check out what 'huge' is relative to the rock he is selling. I personallywould regard 0.25g of Calcalong Creek as 'huge'!

Research, that is the key, both for buyers and sellers!

Hello all, why can't people write 1500g Campo in their description instead
of saying huge Campo. Instead, they make people look at the auction to see
what the sellers idea of huge is. What would ebay be like if everyone simply
wrote meteorite in the description, you would have to look at every
auction to find what you are looking for. I don't want to look at every
auction to find the size I am looking for.

get the notice of competition! Not that I care who claims it, but how
can you attack other's freedom of expression and use the self proclaimed
title of proudest member? Do you see my point? Seems you are saying
that it is wrong only if it isn't your wording. (Yeah I know I sound
harsh but Don't wager it if you aren't willing to lose it and not whine.)

All kidding aside now.

ONE MORE TIME: IMCA Business on IMCA net!!! Why is that such a hard
concept to follow? Post to your hearts content overthere.

IMCA has a procedure for approaching the sellers of questionable auctions.
IMCA has a procedure of taking up complaints against members who are
accused of violating the IMCA policies and the BOD will investigate and
decide who is in violation not the member.

That said, What do you want the meteorite central list members to do for

a little honesty in there descriptions so they do not make us all look bad.
: ) I have noticed, NONE of the big dealers are tricking people into
looking at their stuff. Mike Farmer uses the word large and puts the

do not need to trick people to sell meteorites.

-NOTE: he is thrilled you said so yourself

He gets the BUG and goes back to Ebay to look around. This time he
finds a 94lb Campo, but his campo was huge? So what is a buyer to think?
DONT TRUST THEM DISHONEST IMCA MEMBERS, that whole bunch are full of
#%$(# ! ) Now what, buy from none IMCA members, OK, and it turns
out to be slag! Oh well, this meteorite collecting thing sucks! You can
 not trust anyone!

I see you are impassioned about this but, has anyone come to you and
lodged a specific complaint? Or is this a debate about the number of
angels who can dance on the head of a pin? What punishment are you
advocating? Stoning them with their own auction? lol Tom you are old
enough to know that to men size is relative and subject to inflation in
their imaginations!! I don't see the beef!

  Thanks, Tom
wondering if I should be the proudest member of the IMCA 6168

Well Frankly, I have always wondered how you got that title. I didn't
get the notice of competition!

IMCA has a procedure for approaching the sellers of questionable
auctions.
IMCA has a procedure of taking up complaints against members who are
accused of violating the IMCA policies and the BOD will investigate and
decide who is in violation not the member.

That said, What do you want the meteorite central list members to do for
 you?
