[meteorite-list] Gibeon Anvil Full Slices, first time ever on the market
Hello List, I am excited to announce that I now have available, for a very limited time, a few full slices from a 51kg Gibeon meteorite that was used as an anvil, possibly for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Amazingly rare, historically significant, and way off the Wow Chart! Gibeon is one of the largest strewnfields in the world, with hundreds of large and thousands of smaller sizes specimens found since science discovered it in 1836. However, it is impossible to know how many tons of this meteorite had been found and used for millennia before 1836 by the natives in and around the huge Gibeon Strewnfield. It makes perfect sense that as people would find hunks of iron laying around, that they would take hammer sized pieces, and make hammers out of them, and take anvil sized pieces, and make anvils out of them and take smaller sized pieces and forge tools such as hoes, scrapers, knives, and spear points etc., out of those. Until now, I am an not aware that any meteorite from Gibeon specimens to have shown any definite traces of being altered due to being hammered upon while being used as an anvil. Smaller pieces forged into thinner tools likely would have rusted away after a few hundred years in the elements, so it is not expected that many of them could have survived to modern times. We have seen slices of iron meteorites that show where the Widmanstatten lines have been bent and distorted due to tearing apart of pieces in flight, possibly even by astroidial collisions in space. But those have their bends going only in one direction. In the August 2012 issue of Meteorite Magazine, my wife Qynne has authored a story about how we acquired this piece and the slightly tragic events that unfolded in me discovering that it wasn't just an ordinary Gibeon, but rather that it was indeed an extra-ordinary one. I don't want to ruin your reading in the issue, but I will say that after I saw that the Widmanstatten Structure was tremendously bent, not just in one direction, but in four directions, I knew this was altered by man. (Picture a square square being hammered on it's edges to the point the slices looked like the cross section of a hamburger and bun instead, folded down on both sides of the top and folded up on both sides of the bottom, and you will start to appreciate how this rock was distorted as both the top and bottom surfaces had been flattened and rounded in relentless poundings). I realized that it had indeed been hit, no doubt hundreds of thousands of times to artificially shape it, and to distort the normally straight Widmanstatten lines into amazingly curved ones. I originally chopped about 1/4 of an end piece off the mass, before discovering the evidence that this was an anvil. I immediately contacted curators of the major collections, both institutional and private, to see if any of them were interested in trading some normal Gibeon (or other specimens) for either 1/4, or 3/4 or both pieces of an anvil? There was no expressed interest, so I decided to turn the cutting over to a pro, and let Marlin Cilz slice the end piece into 19 slices and a smaller end piece. Marlin ran into some challenges on etching the slices, as it seems evident that the mass was artificially heated. Not heated to the point that all the pattern was lost completely, only that the pattern is faded, so that unlike the normal pattern one usually sees in Gibeon slices, where it is sharp and crisp, and where it pops very clearly and quickly when etched in acid, the etching took quite a long time to allow a much deeper etch to reveal the contorted lines in an appreciable visible state. I had Marlin send most of the slices back to me unetched so I could test various methods of etching to see what would show off this very special alteration the best. Various methods and various times in the solutions produced different looks and different results. All of which were hard to capture in photographs, and yet when holding the slices in your hands, allowing some light to strike the raised bands while other light hitting the deeper etched surfaces made for really amazing slices to behold. Meanwhile, not all the testing resulted in ideal results. Sometimes a slice would get over etched. Other times the acid neutralizer would work too much and seem to stain the what should have been a nicely finished slice. Other times, the etching acid would not immediately get neutralized and some would leach out from the cavities of the squished regmaglipts on the sides that had long ago been hammered shut. Neutralizing that hidden acid later would stop the etching, but not until after the darker stains would have set in the surface of the slice. This would require the slice to be completely sanded down and the whole process to be started all over again. During all of this, I am wrestling with what to price this material at? Price it too
Re: [meteorite-list] Gibeon Anvil Full Slices, first time ever on the market
Very interesting, This Anvil was in my personal collection over a decade ago. I called it the Gator because it looked like an alligator's head to me at the time. I even etched a small two inch circular window on it to make sure it was indeed Gibeon when I acquired it. It took me a year to figure out its odd twisted shape and bent over metal was from being hammered repeatably and was not natural. I remember lugging it to the Denver show in 2002 where I left it in the care of Blaine Reed who found a new owner in 2003. The Gator has now resurfaced to take another bite. [meteorite-list] Gibeon query
I am having trouble trying to find the law which apparently prohibits the export of Gibeon meteorites from Namibia. This is mentioned as a buy now while stocks last selling point on a number of meteorite dealers' websites, but other sources suggest its interpretation is not that simple. Can anyone tell me if this law exists and what it is called, and who would be authorised (in theory) to issue a permit allowing it to be exported legally? If the text is on the Internet that would be great. I gather the law was introduced in 2003 (?) and I presume it does not work retrospectively. Are there among us dealers who actually have the export licence for the pieces in their stock, or does it all come from before the introduction of the law? This is not a trick/troll question, I am in dispute with a pseudo-dealer over a recent transaction and would like to be surer of my ground when discussing one of the items. Is there a website collecting meteorite laws of different countries in one place? [meteorite-list] Gibeon Meteorite Smuggling Case Withdrawn
http://allafrica.com/stories/200404200352.html Meteorite Smuggling Case Withdrawn The Namibian (Windhoek) April 20, 2004 Werner Menges Windhoek REPEATED delays in getting the case to trial dealt a blow to the prosecution in the case of a Windhoek resident accused of the theft and illegal export of meteorites from Namibia. All charges had to be withdrawn against minerals dealer Walter Horst (59) in the Windhoek Magistrate's Court last Tuesday. The State now has one more option open to it to try to salvage the case. According to Ruth Herunga, Control Public Prosecutor in the Windhoek Magistrate's Court, the prosecution intends to issue a summons to Horst, notifying him that he will have to return to court to face the charges that had been pending against him since September 2001. Witnesses who were to testify for the prosecution against Horst would also have to be re-summonsed to court once the prosecution is finally ready to proceed with the case against Horst, she added. Last week's withdrawal of the long pending charges appear to have been the result of a lack of communication and co-operation between the Police and the prosecution. Horst had been accused of having been involved in the illegal smuggling of meteorites from Namibia - were they are protected by law and may not be moved from where they are found or exported. Namibia is internationally known as one of the world's prime spots where meteorites have been discovered. The Gibeon area in the south of the country is especially well-known for the large number of space debris that has fallen to earth there in what has become known as the Gibeon meteorite shower. Meteorites are in demand with international collectors who are often prepared to pay thousands of US dollars for large specimens. Meteorites from Gibeon are being advertised for sale on collectors' websites on the Internet - all illegally, since export is forbidden. Horst is one of the only people ever to have been prosecuted in Namibia for alleged involvement in this smuggling trade. He was first arrested in September 2001 on charges that he had been found in possession of a rhino horn, and that he had also received a meteorite weighing some 296 kg from three men who had allegedly stolen it from a display in Windhoek's Post Street Mall. Horst was released on bail of N$10 000 on those charges. Less than a year later, in August 2002, he was arrested again when he was allegedly caught trying to send a crate containing four meteorites to an address in Johannesburg. He spent three weeks in custody before he was released again on bail of N$10 000. On October 17 2002, the two cases against Horst were consolidated into one. After that, the remaining case returned to court repeatedly, only to be postponed time and again. Last Tuesday was the twelfth time that Horst appeared in court on the first charges that arose in September 2001. By last Tuesday, his case had been postponed for a final remand three times, and after that for a final final remand once more, before it was postponed one more time in December - then because the Magistrate, who was supposed to be dealing with the matter, was not present at court. According to the record of the case, Horst himself was responsible for one request for a postponement. His lawyer also once asked for more time because the contents of the Police docket containing the evidence that had been gathered during the investigation had not been disclosed to the defence yet. The State asked for the other nine postponements. Last week, the docket threw the final wrench in the works for the prosecution. Public Prosecutor Karin van Wyk told Magistrate Elina Nandago that the investigating officer in the case had been asked to send the docket to the court three weeks before the scheduled start of the trial, which was to be last week. That was not done, though. Instead she was told by the officer last Tuesday that he would be travelling out of Namibia - with the result that not even he would be at court to testify. As a result, she withdrew the charges. Due to the repeated delays in his case, the court had already ordered in August last year that Horst's bail money had to be repaid to him. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

RE: [meteorite-list] Gibeon for 999$?
They throw a lot of words and non relevant history around. I come from near that area, and there were no missionaries there, and the only Cubans were those involved with rebels in Angola during the South African bush war, for control of parts of the then protectorate South West Africa (150 years later!), which is where Gibeon is (it's Namibia now). West Africa and slavery is far to the North. Also, no one there worships rocks even if they are from space. Different way of doing things. This is a lot of touristy sounding stuff that would never work in Southern Africa - and if you don't position that meteorite in the exact position and lighting, I bet it looks like Mr Hanky from South Park. For $999, which is about R7000, you can fly to South Africa and then up to Windhoek and have a weeks holiday there yourself. The Namibian currency is even weaker than the SA Rand. [meteorite-list] Gibeon Shrapnel
I read today that the Silkote Alin fall had pieces of what were essentially shrapnel, from the iron that fell. On the weekend I bought a few pieces of Gibeon, from a guy who had been in Namibia (I'm in SA so it's close). These are bits straight out of the ground. One has a sharp blade of metal coming off it, like it has been ripped. Nothing like a nice neat stone. Is the idea of the meteorite exploding into pieces common? And will it react in the same way as a chunk of iron?
