[meteorite-list] meteorite Lingo

2002-05-10 Thread Matson, Robert

Hi
All,

Jay
Haynes was curious about the definition of "monomict" (as in
monomict breccia).  As you might guess, mono-
means "one", so
a
monomict breccia is made up of one busted-up rock.  A
polymict
breccia is thus made up of pieces from more than one
source
rock.

>
Also how does one pronounce enstatite.

Emphasis is on the first syllable, with a lesser accent
on the
third
syllable:

en' -
stuh - tight'

Cheers,
Rob

Jay
Monomict in simple terms, means that the breccia is
comprise dof one matrix, ie the same meteorite crushed up. Shock stage is the
level of shock that caused the breakup for the breccia, this one is highly
shocked as can be seen by the massive fragmentation. Weathering is used on
chondrites, and is the level of terrestrial (Earth) alteration of the meteorite.
Bensour is 0, which is as fresh as you can get, as in never seen a drop of
water, as it is a witnessed fall and picked up immediately.

While reading through various descriptions of meteorites there is always a
few things that pop up that are really a foriegn language to me. For
instance, for Bensour here are the things I do not quite understand.

Monomict (seen it before but never really understood what it ment)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also how does one pronounce
