[meteorite-list] Meteorite Men versus The Hunt

2015-06-03 Thread E.P. Grondine via Meteorite-list
Hi all -

Another market factor is the television exposure that Meteorite Men provided.
Now that that project has sadly ended (hi geoff, steve), perhaps the thing to
do would be for all of you
to take videos of your hunts to recent falls, and then those videos could be
combined into television shows, something like a real reality show of these
races to locate and collect the pieces.

Of course, that would require some cooperation with your rivals, but it wold
likely be good for the market as a whole. The revenue might provide some
protection against failed huns.

I do not know who Geoff and Steve's producers and editors were, and if they
would be interested in such a project, but my guess is that they might be.

good hunting,
E.P.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Men joke

2012-10-21 Thread Claudiu Tanaselia
Hello,

The following discussion happened between my and my wife tonight and I
thought you might enjoy it as well:

Me: Discovery Channel is having a show called Meteorite Men
Her: Called what?
Me: Meteorite Men
Her: Oh, meteorite... I thought you were saying Meet your right man

I know the show isn't quite new, but I never got the chance to watch
it since I'm not sure if they ran it on our regional Discovery Channel
yet, since I barely touch the remote control lately. Time to catch up.

Claudiu.

According to Wikipedia, third season ran between 28 November 2011 and 9 January
2012. As I said, I haven't got the chance to see any of the episodes yet, but I
plan to fix this soon.

on march 14th on the science channel. The first one is steve and geaoff

But I saw them listed in TV GUIDE so I thought I would give everyone a
heads up for next week. I dont how many more there will be for season

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Men on Discovery 1pm EST

2011-06-11 Thread Notkin

Dear Listees:

For U.S. members who don't get Science Channel and would like to catch
an episode of Meteorite Men, Discovery Channel is very shortly
having a special screening of one of our favorites -- the Henbury
Craters adventure from Season Two -- at 1 pm Eastern.

I am also very pleased to announce that Meteorite Men just won a
second Telly Award. Season Three is in production and we'll be back on
the air in the fall with eight new episodes.

And finally, a correction: Thank you to those of you who pointed out
(from my post last night) that Juancheng is -- of course -- a
witnessed fall from China, not Japan, which I did know : ) but I
must have just not been paying attention. Sorry about that!

Enjoy the weekend,

Geoff N.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Men at NEAF 2011, New York, This Weekend

2011-04-12 Thread Notkin

Dear Listees:

Steve Arnold and I are featured guests at the 20th anniversary
Northeast Astronomy Forum (NEAF) this coming weekend at Rockland
Community College in Suffern, New York. NEAF is one of the country's
top science forums, and an important educational outreach event.
Vendors demonstrate the latest in telescope technology and there are
numerous presentations and workshops.

Steve and I will be giving a presentation on meteorite hunting for the
International Dark Sky Association on Saturday, April 16 at 1 pm. On
Sunday, at 4 pm, we are the NEAF keynote speakers and will host an
audio visual presentation about the making of Season Two of Meteorite
Men, and talk about our plans for the upcoming third season. We will
also be displaying the 109-lb Alpha pallasite found on the Meteorite
Men pilot.

We'll have an impressive display of meteorites and collectibles on
hand, including new finds and acquisitions. In addition, popular
author, astronomer, and meteorite specialist Dr. Mike Reynolds will be
in attendance, as will our excellent friend Geoff Cintron, formerly of
Island Meteorite. Astronomy magazine, Sky Telescope, and
Astronomy Now are among the many other noted vendors and
publications that will be represented.

Details: http://www.rocklandastronomy.com/NEAF/index.html

Steve and I warmly invite any List members in the tri-state area to
come along and say hello. NEAF is a great event and you will not be
disappointed. The college is only about a 45-minute drive from NYC,
with plenty of free parking.

With best wishes,

2011-04-12 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi List,

Geoff is absolutely right about NEAF. If you are interested in
optics, astronomy, or meteorites, it is well worth a visit. The
latest in cutting-edge optics is always on display and every year
Televue has it's famous Blem Sale where you can buy eyepieces like
Naglers and Panoptics at a substantial discount. Plus, Alan Traino
(one of the key organizers of NEAF) is a great guy and he makes sure
that NEAF always has interesting vendors and speakers. If you are in
the area, don't miss it.

(and if you go, join the IDA and help keep our skies dark!)

 Science Channel renews 'Meteorite Men'
Series to return for third season
 By Stuart Miller

 'Big Love' says goodbye
Exclusive: Science Channel has ordered a third season of Meteorite Men.
Produced by the LMNO Cable Group, skein follows co-hosts Geoff Notkin and
Steve Arnold as the search for outer space objects -- some more than 40
million years old -- that have landed on Earth. Eric Schotz is exec producer.
Discovery-owned Science Channel is faring well with An Idiot Abroad, its
new skein with Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington. Through
two episodes, Idiot -- where Pilkington offers his off-kilter take on the
Seven Wonders of the World -- is the net's most-watched series ever in the
25-54 demo and highest rated in 18-49.
Since its Jan. 22 premiere, 4.3 million viewers have tuned in.

2010-12-29 Thread Guenther
I have been a list member for only about 2 months. I wonder if I was the
only one that thought this was the Steve Arnold from the Meteorite Men?
Finally after this post, I realize that I was wrong in my assumption. Man I
feel stupid. From this Steve Aronld's previous post I thought Steve from the
Meteorite Men was recovering from skin cancer, wasn't going to be on the
show next year, taking a year off from meteorites and that he wasn't going
to be at the Tucson show.

Hi Geoff:

Everytime I give talks around the SE about meteorites, people ask me Have
you seen Meteorite Men? I always have to say No b/c I don't have cable T.V.
A
few days ago I bought Series 1 through Amazons DVD's On Demand and now watch it
on my home computer. It's awesome!

I love the way you and Steve pick at each other. I love the enthusiasm you
both show for your work. I'm frustrated with you when you find an axe head at
the bottom of a deep hole. The narration is terrific and now I'm not only a big
fan, but a groupie!

This was our first trip to Australia, and one of my favorite adventures ever —

Dear Abe, Todd, and all:

Meteorite Men Season One is currently airing in Canada on the
Discovery Science channel.

I'm sorry to report that we do not yet have a DVD release date for any
Meteorite Men episodes. When Steve and I were at Science Channel/
Discovery HQ recently, we asked again about this, but no decision has
been yet been made. Season Two is not yet half-way through its
premieres here in the US, so there's no chance of a S2 release until
all the new episodes have aired.

Once S2 has gone through its first run, there will be 15 Meteorite
Men episodes total, including the pilot, so our hope is they may do a
boxed set release of all of them. I will certainly post news to the M-
List when we have it.

As for the Amazon downloads, you can watch them directly on your
computer, without the need for any additional hardware. The image
quality is quite good for the pay-per-view episodes (and there are no
ads!), so that is at least one option for you.

One of you asked how to find out which episodes you might have missed,
and you may find our Meteorite Men Episode Guide to be useful for
that:

http://meteoritemen.com/meteorite-men-episode-guide.htm

Finally, we constantly post news about the show -- including air dates
and overseas broadcast outlets, photos, etc. -- on our Facebook and
Twitter pages, and invite you to connect with us there if you would
like to know more:

Yup! available from ItunesBUT NOT IN CANADA!

Lots of great episodes available in the States but we need to suffer
north of the border. Probably because they are showing for the first
time on the Candian Science Channel ( Which I don't get ;()
Hopefully they will be released in Cananda in the near future.

Sure! Thanks for the offer Todd. Are the DVDs available in stores in the US
or do you have to buy online?
What about episodes so I can get caught up? I want to buy Season 2 as soon
as it's done but for now I would imagine I have to buy each episode.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Men Airs in Canada this weekend + New US Season

2010-10-02 Thread Notkin

Dear Listees:

Greetings all.

A number of our Canadian friends on the M-List asked me to post a
reminder when Meteorite Men started airing in Canada. I'm pleased to
announce that we are now showing on the brand new Discovery Science
Canada (formerly Discovery Civilization) and there are five episodes
airing tomorrow and Monday. Details are here:

http://www.sciencechannel.ca/showpage.aspx?sid=28040

Steve and I just returned from the ends of the Earth yesterday and we
have completed primary location shooting for Meteorite Men Season
Two, which will premiere in the US one month from today -- November 2
on Science Channel and Science Channel HD. Season Two of Meteorite
Men consists of eight new one-hour episodes and features many exotic
international locations -- some are famous meteorite sites and a
couple may be entirely new to most of you. I estimate that Steve and I
have traveled at least 60,000 miles since we began work in June.
Several episodes will feature the amazing new Meteorite Men
motorcycle, built for us by Orange County Choppers of American
Chopper fame, and Steve and I also recently guest starred on Episode
Four of the current American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior season on TLC.

More about the MM bike here:

http://www.aerolite.org/articles/american-chopper-meteorite-bike.htm

And additional info is available on our official sites:

http://meteoritemen.com

http://www.facebook.com/meteoritemen

http://twitter.com/meteoritemen

Finally, there is a US Meteorite Men marathon repeating all six
Season One episodes on Science Channel this Monday, Oct. 4, commencing
at 9 am.

Details:
http://science.discovery.com/tv-schedules/series.html?paid=48.16200.126184.36729.2

I hope List members will find the new series to be informative and
entertaining. And it's great to be back in Tucson after many months on
the road!

Respectfully,

Geoff N.

Now that is cool. My two passions are meteroties and

can nevert have too many of either. Now combine in one

   Hi Shawn,

I think, you can answer some of your questions by
  yourself.

Outstretch your arm. On your extended arm look on the
  tip of your little
   finger.
The finger nail of your pinky is the Earth.

Imagine, your room has no walls - or go in the
  garden.

250 yards away from your fingernail, that's where the
  meteorites come from.

So it's possibly not so important, where exactly on
  your fingernail they
   will hit.

...and as strained you'll squint your eyes,
it's impossible to match a Shawn, a Mike, an Aziz, a
  Martin, a Bevan... on
   your nail :-)

   Best!
   Martin

  TO BE?

   Hello Listers,
I was doing an Internet search today
on meteorites and came across a write
up about NWA meteorites. I would have to say it was a
  good write up
considering there isn't much about the history of
  NWA's on the Internet. The
write up covered topics from the NWA gold rush, to how
  this affected sales
and peoples desert meteorite collections, and how NWA
  meteorites by some can
be seen as inferior to other meteorites. All these
  points do bring up some
interesting view points in the meteorite community. I
  wonder what peoples
take is on NWA meteorites and how the classification

Betreff: [meteorite-list] NWA meteorites, TO BE OR NOT TO BE?

Hello Listers,

I was doing an Internet search today on meteorites and came across a write

up about NWA meteorites. I would have to say it was a good write up
considering there isn't much about the history of NWA's on the Internet. The
write up covered topics from the NWA gold rush, to how this affected sales
and peoples desert meteorite collections, and how NWA meteorites by some can
be seen as inferior to other meteorites. All these points do bring up some
interesting view points in the meteorite community. I wonder what peoples
take is on NWA meteorites and how the classification works or doesn't work
with some finds?

Why I ask this is because some of the NWA meteorites on eBay are NWA xxx

meteorites, meaning those meteorites haven't been classified and probably
wont. Now to me for every NWA meteorite excluding the Lunar and Martian
meteorites could be almost unique in its owe if there is only a select few
people that get these stones classified, making the NWA meteorite market
confusing and regulated by only classifying certain meteorites and
disregarding others. And as for selling NWA meteorites how does one
determine the price point when the TKW and location is unknown?

Is it to be or not to be when collecting NWA meteorites. this draw back

could affect the classification and make it more confusing compared to finds
in the US and Europe. If I went to the Muffin strewn field and found some
meteorites, I wouldn't have to get them classified because of the
documentation of a fall being there. But on the other hand, if I went to
Africa and found some meteorites I would be SOL and the only way I could
know what the meteorite was is if I got it classified, which I am not sure
how much that costs, but I bet it can be a pretty penny depending what your
getting done on it.

Now could this be a problem in some peoples eyes why they think NWA's might

be questionable because locations cant be accountable? And from a collectors
stand point what features does one collect NWA's? From my take it seems like
that some NWA meteorite are unique in its own way by rarity or uniqueness
cause of lack there of, and because of the way NWA's are collected, cant
this affecting price point and investment for ones collection?

Here is an abstract from the write up about NWA's

NWAs: Second Class Meteorites?

By Norbert Classen, May 2003

On the collector's market, the prices of most Northwest African meteorites
are still dropping while witnessed falls and historic specimens are getting
more expensive. Are NWA meteorites less valuable, or is it a subliminal form
of chauvinism making some people treat them like second class meteorites?

The NWA Dilemma

In the late 1990s, an increasing number of meteorites from the hot deserts
of northwest Africa hit the market, most of them having been recovered by
so-called nomads, i.e. by native people from Morocco and Western Sahara.
After having acquired several meteorites at the local markets, the French
fossil hunters, Bruno Fectay and Carine Bidaut, started to educate their
local team not only to

I'm showing some of the episodes to my college Astronomy classes as an

they can touch and examine in detail. I think showing the process of

Dear Listees:

Those of you in the U.S. who have been wanting to catch Meteorite Men,
but do not subscribe to Science Channel may like to know that there is a
special screening of the Gold Basin episode -- respectfully dedicated to
our late friend Jim Kriegh -- airing in just about thirty minutes on
Discovery Channel. That's 1 am Eastern and 10 pm here in Tucson. It's
actually my favorite episode.

Meteorite Men is also currently airing on Quest Channel 38 in the UK,
so hopefully some of my friends from back home will get a chance to
catch it.

2010-03-30 Thread Greg Stanley

Hi Geoff:

I enjoyed the episode last night very much.  Beautiful find by Steve, but you
did find the first one.

I had a thought at the end - I think a great episode would be what happens to
a 'type' specimen after arriving at a University to be classified.  You could
have a variety of samples and show how they are cut and prepared and then how
the thin sections are made.  Then how are they probed and then explain the
different classifications.  You could include a lot of information and make it
not too technical; and of course, what make some meteorites more valuable.

I have gotten meteorites classified and it would be really neat to see the
entire process.

I hope you get a second season.

Keep at it... and one day you'll find one on that Mesa.

I would agree that a few shows on historic and educational outreach would be a
good thing, but Im sure they probably have rather limited input on the
direction of the show. That said, I would like to hear them comment of the
possibilities of doing more in this area.
The show is a great tool to bring more new people into meteorites, but as with
anything (baseball cards, toys etc) when there is a value and increase in
interest, there will be scammers that come in to try to make the quick buck.
Overall, the show is one of the best marketing tools the meteorite world has
seen.
Keep it up guys, as others have said, there is room to grow!

I agree with you Adam.  As much
as the Meteorite Men show has provided better awareness to
meteorites in the general population, it has also spurred
 the conmen and get-rich-quick schemers.

I think the show has been steered by producers to make it
more appealing to viewers, but in doing so have placed far

Professional  treasure hunters now avoid the press when
values are put up. Just look at the Mel Fisher group who had
to fight for a decade to keep a good portion of their major

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Men effects

2010-03-22 Thread meteorhntr
Hey list,

Interesting topic. I thought I would change the Subject Line though.

Let me give you guys a little behind the scenes understanding of what happens
in the making of Meteorite Men.

There is a production company that owns the show by the name of LMNO
Productions. They have been around maybe for 20 years with 150 or so different
programs under their belt. Some were long running series, some were just
one-offs, but they have a very experienced staff of professionals that know
what they are doing.

They came up with the idea of the Meteorite Men show after reading a front page
story about me in the LA Times back in 2007. They had not seen anything about
the earlier programs Geoff and I (nor anyone else) had been on when they called
me that first time.

They made a short 4 min video and pitched it to a handful of networks, and
Science Channel gave them the best offer for a pilot, so they took it.

Geoff and I were hired as the Talent and we were in show business!

Now here is how it works: there is an Executive Producer assigned by the
network to oversee the production of the episodes. Geoff and I have a boss,
that is the show's Executive Producer who has a boss that is the owner of the
LMNO Production Company.

We all, in reality, have one customer, and that is the Science Channel's
Executive Producer. If this one man is happy, we get paid. If he is not
happy, they keep sending the video back to get it changed to how he likes it.
Once it is adjusted to how he likes it, we get paid.

In theory, the Executive Producer on the Network side hopefully knows what his
network's audience will like, and he directs us all in the right direction. If
not, he gets fired.

Rest assured, nothing makes it onto your TV sets at home that is not exacly
what he wants.

Now, we have been told that if we do get a second season, the network will send
the episodes from the first season to some very exhaustive market research,
where carefully selected participants will sit in dark rooms watching the
episodes with a dial in their hands. When they like something on the show, they
dial it one way. When they don't like something, they dial it the other way.

Sometimes this gets to be subconscious in the minds of the viewing research
subjects. But it is very scientific, and it is the one way to actually trump
the personal opinion of the networks EP.

If every time my face is on screen, most or all the people turn their dials to
the right, and every time Geoff is on screen, they turn it to the
left...well...then there might jkust be tryouts for a replacement Meteorite Man
to take one of our spots.

If they don't like my Tshirt, or the way I go Oh, oh, oh... Right before each
comercial. But rather they like how I say Geoff, look what I found! then we
can rest ashured I will be instructed what to say or not say in the future, or
by the magic of post-production I will say the right things before all the
future commercial breaks.

Each of first 7 episodes were quite different in many ways. It will be
interesting what the market testing might end up revealing.

If the key demographics don't like the values of the meteorite being revealed
during the show, then I'm sure what our one customer wants will end up
changing. And in turn, that will change the directives to our production
company in how the put future shows together in post production.

Starting a letter writing campaign to Science Channel might be tempting, but
unless you have a Nielson Box, on your TV, I don't think it will help.

Let me point out that about a dozen years or so ago, I did a promotional
campaign in the media that generated 240 samples of suspected meteorites being
sent to me. Out of that batch, 3 were genuine meteorites.

I could have complained about the 79 wrongs for each 'rite, but I didn't. It
is a numbers game. Yes it can get frustrating dealing with the wrongs and the
people who send them in. May I suggest that if you are such a person who
easily gets frustrated, don't solicit that people send you samples to evaluate.
I'm sure there are more than enough others to pick up the slack.

Who knows what all the good and bad will be from the Meteorite Men series?
Let's have this discussion in 40 years, and if 20 of us talk then, we still
will probably have 20 different takes on it then.

I understand in general, some people are the glass is half empty pessimistic
types, and they often really enjoy being negative. While others are the half
full optimistic types. And of course everyone is entitled to their opinion.

But, much, if not most of this is out of both Geoff's and my hands, not to
mention anyone else reading this. What happens is going to happen anyway. So,
my advice would be for people to plan to take advantage of the change(s) as
best you can.

Last night the US Congress passed some radical changes that will dramatically
effect a lot of people's lives in respect to Health Care

Subject: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Men effects

Hey list,

Interesting topic. I thought I would change the Subject Line though.

Let me give you guys a little behind the scenes understanding of what
happens in the making of Meteorite Men.

There is a production company that owns the show by the name of LMNO
Productions. They have been around maybe for 20 years with 150 or so
different programs under their belt. Some were long running series, some
were just one-offs, but they have a very experienced staff of
professionals that know what they are doing.

They came up with the idea of the Meteorite Men show after reading a front
page story about me in the LA Times back in 2007. They had not seen
anything about the earlier programs Geoff and I (nor anyone else) had been
on when they called me that first time.

Geoff and I have a
boss, that is the show's Executive Producer who has a boss that is the
owner of the LMNO Production Company.

We all, in reality, have one customer, and that is the Science Channel's
Executive Producer. If this one man is happy, we get paid. If he is not
happy, they keep sending the video back to get it changed to how he likes
it. Once it is adjusted to how he likes it, we get paid.

In theory, the Executive Producer on the Network side hopefully knows what
his network's audience will like, and he directs us all in the right
direction. If not, he gets fired.

Rest assured, nothing makes it onto your TV sets at home that is not
exacly what he wants.

Now, we have been told that if we do get a second season, the network will
send the episodes from the first season to some very exhaustive market
research, where carefully selected participants will sit in dark rooms
watching the episodes with a dial in their hands. When they like something
on the show, they dial it one way. When they don't like something, they
dial it the other way.

Sometimes this gets to be subconscious in the minds of the viewing
research subjects. But it is very scientific, and it is the one way to
actually trump the personal opinion of the networks EP.

If every time my face is on screen, most or all the people turn their
dials to the right, and every time Geoff is on screen, they turn it to the
left...well...then there might jkust be tryouts for a replacement
Meteorite Man to take one of our spots.

If they don't like my Tshirt, or the way I go Oh, oh, oh... Right before
each comercial. But rather they like how I say Geoff, look what I found!
then we can rest ashured I will be instructed what to say or not say in
the future, or by the magic of post-production I will say the right
things before all the future commercial breaks.

Each of first 7 episodes were quite different in many ways. It will be
interesting what the market testing might end up revealing.

If the key demographics don't like the values of the meteorite being
revealed during the show, then I'm sure what our one customer wants will
end up changing. And in turn, that will change the directives to our
production company in how the put future shows together in post
production.

Starting a letter writing campaign to Science Channel might be tempting,
but unless you have a Nielson Box, on your TV, I don't think it will help.

Let me point out that about a dozen years or so ago, I did a promotional
campaign in the media that generated 240 samples of suspected meteorites
being sent to me. Out of that batch, 3 were genuine meteorites.

I could have complained about the 79 wrongs for each 'rite, but I didn't.
It is a numbers game. Yes it can get frustrating dealing with the wrongs
and the people who send them in. May I suggest that if you are such a
person who easily gets frustrated, don't solicit that people send you
samples to evaluate. I'm sure there are more than enough others to pick
up the slack.

Who knows what all the good and bad will be from the Meteorite Men series?
Let's have this discussion in 40 years, and if 20 of us talk then, we
still will probably have 20 different takes on it then.

I understand in general, some people are the glass is half empty
pessimistic types, and they often really enjoy being negative. While
others

Hi Paul,

Following on from your information about bog ironI was recently shown a
picture by a friend who had visited Orkney, off the coast of Scotland. It
showed a rock labeled as a meteorite in a cabinet at the museum there. I had
never heard of that before and followed it up with emails to the museum and
other investigations. Apparently that was collected after a fireball was seen
over the island many years ago and although it is still labelled as 'meteorite'
in their small museum it has been independently looked at by a local geologist
who seems sure it is bog iron. Apparently it is commonly found on the Island in
the peaty areas.

I too am still not confident what that stone may be...I am sure it has never
been tested for nickel. Meteorite or Meteorwrong? A new British meteorite or
not? The finder's family say they have some other pieces and would send me
samples, but nothing yet.

Anyone know the exact mechanism that forms bog iron?

The most frustrating meteorwrongs in Louisiana are
bog iron ores, which form in permanently saturated
coastal plain soils and often are associated with springs.
Pieces of this material have an unfortunate tendency of
being dense, pitch black, and even magnetic. Certain
pieces are troublesome because neither I nor any other

about judging them as definite meteorwrongs without
being able to inspect them in person.

I have been tempted to suggest to to a soil scientist, whom
I worked with, that looking at the genesis of these bog

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Men schedules in the UK

2010-02-25 Thread martin goff
Hi all,

To everyone in the UK, I have found the schedule info for Meteorite
Men being broadcast in the UK. The channel is called 'Quest' which is
a Discovery channel without having the 'Discovery' name. Its on Sky
channel 154 and on Freeview channel 38.

It airs on Monday nights at 21:00hrs, episode 2 is being shown Monday
1st March and episode 3 on Monday 8th March. Thats as far as the
schedules show on the website (www.questtv.co.uk) so i assume it will
carry on each week at the same time and that episode 1 has already
been shown.

Make a date in your diaries folks!

Cheers

Martin

 Dear Listees:

Viewers in the US might like to know that the Season One finale of Meteorite
Men will air tonight on Science Channel at 9 pm Eastern Pacific; 7 pm in
Arizona. Please check local listing for details. Repeats will continue on
Wednesday at the same time, and additional showtimes can be found here:

 http://science.discovery.com/tv/meteorite-men

Our guest stars in this evening's episode include Mr. Meteorite himself --
Ruben Garcia -- and his fabulous meteorite dog, Hopper; world renowned
meteorite specialist Dr. Alan Rubin of UCLA; Marc Fries of  the National
Weather Service in Oxnard explaining how Doppler radar was used to locate the
West, Texas fall zone; and M-List members Suzanne and LIsa Marie Morrison.
Oh, and Steve manages to zoom off to Virginia to investigate the recent fall
there. It's quite the action-packed episode and I hope you enjoy it.

Also, viewers in the UK, please check QUEST (Freeview Channel 38) which is
evidently airing the Meteorite Men pilot. Three old school friends emailed
me from England yesterday saying: We just saw you on the telly  : )  That's
 all I know, sorry.

 And before anyone asks:

 - No, we do not have other international air dates yet, but we hope we will
 soon or one day

 - No, we do not have a date for DVD release yet, but we hope we will soon or
 one day

I only know what they tell me  : )

And for our friends in and around Tucson, just a reminder that the final MM
screening party, for this season, will take place at Sky Bar Tucson tonight:
6 pm cocktails; 7 pm screening:

And finally, for now, it was GREAT to see so many of you here for the 2010
Tucson gem show. I hope you had as much fun as I did, and also I hope you got
more sleep that I did. Only 48 weeks 'til Tucson 2011.

Ol La Grange TX.  I used to go there all the time to hunt petrified wood and
palm.  I found pieces so big I could barely carry them.  My roommate (years
ago) had relatives living there.  I remember a roadside chicken joint that
had the best hamburgers ever.  There were some towns nearby where Tektites
had been found - I never found any though.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Men Season Finale Tonight

2010-02-24 Thread MeteorHntr
Darryl and all,

Thanks for being so kind in helping us out at this year's show in
compiling footage of what happens at the Tucson show. That thanks goes out
to all
our other friends who were also willing to jump in front of the camera to
help us make our show a lot better.

It was exciting to see footage shot less than 3 weeks ago make it into
tonight's episode. We got quite a bit of footage in Tucson that includes a
lot of our friends. If Meteorite Men gets a second season, more of this
captured footage including more of our friends, customers and fellow hunters
will be able to be featured.

We feel there is so much more of the meteorite hunting and collecting world
to show everyone, we just hope the viewers and the suits at the network
feel the same way.

getting $700,000 in green bills is a long shot, but if it can be
traded for, say 14 items each in the $50,000 range, and those could be
converted to green cash, is it wrong to say it is worth that.

Need I remind everyone that the finder of the Tagish Lake 800 gram rock
(similar in size and composition as Sonny's) got $800,000 in Canadian money
 for his find.

Sonny is in the business, and as such, he really might realize $700k for his
CM1 rock over time. Could he take it to a pawn shop in vegas and get
$700,000? No, I would think not.

But if someone else finds a CM1 here in the US and wants to sell theirs for
 $72/g ($50,000 / 699g) then cool.

 Hell Mike, Steve, and List,
Right, but you're applying the price per gram that would apply to
small pieces in retail to a much larger stone.
A single gram may be worth a thousand dollars (in this case, it's
probably justified, given what comparable material is known to sell
for), but the simple fact of the matter is that it would take decades
to sell off 700 grams at that price in small pieces. Ask any dealer
who's held a stable asking price for material for which they are the
 only source.
As a complete stone, I estimate that the highest offer on it would
reach $60-70,000. Don't get me wrong - it could sell for more,
 but...it's wholesale.
Yes, it might be worth more in a sense, but I believe that the
general consensus here has always been that these rocks are worth
what people were willing to pay for them. I haven't asked Sonny, but
based on what I know of the market, I doubt that he's gotten an offer
as high as 100k for it. He might well get a better offer, but that
would make it one of the more costly meteorites to actually sell - in
 the past decade.

So, no. I think it's safe to say that $700,000 is not close to a
 reasonable estimate.
Even if you assume $1000/g for smaller pieces, you're not taking
cutting losses into account, which would take it to at most $500k, or
thereabouts, and it would take so long to sell that simply stating a
price like that is rather deceptive.

There's a reason that the asking price for the 420kg Fukang main mass
is in the 2-3 million dollar range (about $5-6/g), as opposed to being
$16.8 million. Fukang may be worth $40/g. That doesn't mean that a
large piece is worth that much.

And the same principle applies across the board - a single acre of
land will run you more per acre than will an acre of land in a
hundred-acre parcel. And if you buy ten cars from a dealer, they'll
probably give you something of a discount, whereas if you buy only
 one...not so much.

I appreciate the optimistic quote from the market's perspective,
but...it's just not reasonable to say that the rock is worth that much
when it wouldn't fetch that on the market.

Don't get me wrong. I am not picking on Sonny's awesome specimen.
That is truly an amazing find and any meteorite hunter would cream
himself upon finding it. The only thing better would be if Sonny
found the first US lunaite. And my dollar amount gripe was
specifically targeted at Sonny's CM1. Even those dry lake bed
weathered chondrites seem overpriced at $1.50 a gram or $2 a gram. I
guess they are probably worth that much now because they have been on
TV, but I can buy prettier weathered ordinary-chondrites from NWA for
a 20 cents a gram. A collector looking for a cool rock that was on TV
and was found by a famous meteorite hunter will pay extra for an OC
from Meteorite Men - but most collectors who buy weathered OC's are
also the types who look for bargains and will buy the stones that cost
.20 cents a gram and pass on the more expensive ones, regardless of
their connection to TV. Heck, I just traded 100 grams of trinitite
for 4000 grams of weathered uNWA stones. I won't say what my cost on
trinitite is, but I can say that the batch of uNWA I traded for is
prettier than the dry lake bed specimens (for the most part, I do have
some UGLY ones though) and my cost was less than $1 a gram -
substantially less. (FWIW, the ugliest ones are going into a rock
 tumbler)

I just don't want this emphasis on dollar values to come back and bite
us in the ass. I can imagine Steve (or any hunter) going up to some
landowner and attempting to broker a deal to hunt on the land, and the
landowner will expect $10,000 for every 100-gram OC that is pulled out
of the dirt on his land - because there is an inflated sense of what
these stones are worth. On the List, we know that a meteorite's
stated value often has an asterisk next to it, and I think it's

Hello Listers,

Here is a link to Meteorite Men, episode 05 for those who haven't seen this
one. I tried to look for episodes 2,3,4 but can only find 1 and 5. In this
episode Sonny is a guest on the show and presents his Moapa Valley CM1
meteorite, valued at $700,000. I am wondering how much the Paris CM meteorite
would bring in this market for the fact its the only CM meteorite to exists,
now that's a rare find.

Lastly, after watching this episode I could see why alot of numbers $$$ were
thrown around this episode because half of the episode showed Steve, Geoffrey,
and Sonny repetitively picking up weathered old meteorite fragments over and
over on the dry lake bed in AZ. But again, I did enjoy the episode and at the
end when Steve and Geoffrey go to ASU to get the classification done on the
meteorites that they found on the dry lake bed. Thank you Meteorite Men.

 Hi MikeG and List,

In this episode, Sony's CM1 is one of only two found outside of Antarctica.
The other one, as I understand, sold out quickly at several thousand dollars
per gram. Sony has placed a value of $1,000 per gram thus the estimation of
his 699g rock at $700,000 is probably reasonable for a US find.

I was quoted as saying these ordinary chondrite pieces were probably worth $1
per gram but I will probably list them on eBay for $5 per gram (for the 2-10g
size pieces) and see how they do.

 Hi Folks,

Is it just me, or do the dollar values for some of the meteorites
shown on Meteorite Men seem a little inflated?  This is not a
criticism, but just a straight question.  As a collector and part-time
dealer, the prices given for some of these specimens seems a bit on
 the optimistic side.

From a dealer's perspective,  if the public thinks a meteorite is
worth more than it actually is, the dealer charge more for them.

From a hunter's perspective, if the public thinks a meteorite is worth
more than it actually is, they can have unrealistic expectations for
 what their rocks are worth.

Steve has spoken about this on the List previously, because landowners
will have unrealistic expectations of what their specimens are worth -
and this gives hunters fits who are trying to buy specimens or cut
 deals with landowners.

So, where exactly are these dollar values coming from?  Who is setting
them and putting them on the screen during the final edit?

 Best regards and happy hunting,

 MikeG

2010-02-17 Thread meteorhntr
Jason,

I agree getting $700,000 in green bills is a long shot, but if it can be traded
for, say 14 items each in the $50,000 range, and those could be converted to
green cash, is it wrong to say it is worth that.

Need I remind everyone that the finder of the Tagish Lake 800 gram rock
(similar in size and composition as Sonny's) got $800,000 in Canadian money for
his find.

Sonny is in the business, and as such, he really might realize $700k for his
CM1 rock over time. Could he take it to a pawn shop in vegas and get $700,000?

The video is less than five minutes but it's pretty cool watching Jim

Yes, Mark, it was a great party. It was good to see everyone there!

And it was clear!

Hope to see everyone at the Lunar Lab exhibit on Saturday January 30.

 Hello List,

Great show, great party!  Thanks Geoff and everyone who helped make it
possible.  I hope I can make it next week for the Meteorite Men party.

I was a pleasure visiting with everyone tonight.  Now I'm even
more excited that the show is just around the corner, and the first
comprehensive AZ meteorites exhibition!  It's going to be an exciting show
this year - I look forward to visiting with everyone some more.

 Hey List,

It is with great pleasure that  I invite all of you to sit down tonight
 and
to take a journey to Canada with  Geoff Notkin and myself on Science
 Channel
(9pm Eastern) on our first episode of  our first season of Meteorite
 Men
 the Series.

I haven't seen the  episode myself yet, but some of our friends in the
production office have, and  it promises to be a fun adventure and
 (don't
tell anyone I said this, but) we do  find some meteorites in this
 episode.

Geoff and I are keenly aware  that this TV series might be the best
opportunity for the meteorite collecting  community to put our best foot
forward and show the world a glimpse into what  makes our passion of
collecting so exciting.  Of course we have to mix the  geeky science
 with a
little humor and drama, or people won't stick around for  the end of the
show, and won't come back next week.

I want to give a HUGE  amount of credit to our LMNO Productions team.
 We
have had over 95 people  working on this show on the production side,
 not to
mention the hundreds of  people working over on the Science Channel and
Discovery Network to make this  happen.  Millions of dollars have been
invested to bring this episode to  air, and it is very humbling
 realizing
that while Geoff and I have our faces on  screen, NONE of this would be
possible without the team behind the scenes.

And, I would be remiss to not take the time to thank ALL of you that
 have
supported me over the last 18 years when I have tried to eek out a
 living in
this crazy business.  If it weren't for the scientists who study these
rocks, if it weren't for the collecting customers that buy a piece here
 and
 a
slice there from me,  tonight would never have become a reality.

I have to give a huge shout out to Blaine Reed who was my one and only
customer for the first 6 years of my meteorite career.  In a business of
buy low and sell high, somehow, Blaine had a philosophy of How much
 can I
afford to pay Steve for what he brings me? as opposed to How cheap can
 I
get these rocks from Steve?  Blaine, if it weren't for you buddy, I
 would
have  been out of this business before I even got into it.  I owe you a
 big

Margarita at the Birthday Bash, and every Birthday Bash from here on
 out.
 In
fact, anyone who likes this show tonight, buy Blaine a drink before you
 offer  me one, ok?

Of course kudos have to go out to THE Meteorite Man Bob Haag,  who
 blazed a
trail through a jungle that we all are enjoying the fruits of  now.

Harvey Nininger, Oscar Monnig, Glen Huss, H.O. Stockwell, just to  name
 a
few, are pillars that hold the roof over all of our heads now.

I  have to thank my amazing wife, Qynne, and the two greatest daughters
 a
guy could  ever hope to have, Lauren and Kelsey who have shared me and
 my
 time with this  calling.

A big thanks goes out to Phil Mani who on a gut feeling  supported the
Brenham adventure a few years back, which was one domino in the  series
 to
fall that led to all of this.

There is a huge amount of credit  and thanks that needs to be extended
 to
the 8n8 crew that inadvertently  journeyed with me to the Alpha site
 several
years back which ended up being in  our pilot episode.  All of you guys
 are
getting your financial return on  the project, but also know from me
 that
 you guys also deserve

Hi Mark (and Geoff if you see this):

I just received an email from the MIT Alumni Associaton and they are
meeting at the Sky Bar on the 27th from 5:00 to 8:00. I do not know how
many people will show up for that group.

Larry

PS Missed Mars, guess I left too early. :(

Right on Larry, they had a 10 dob on the patio and lot's of folks were
treated to a nice view of the moon, and low power looks at Mars.  Great
venue!  I think I'm tied up next week because I have secretarial duties at
an annual business meeting (but hoping I'm wrong - or able to come late).

Anyways, for those who couldn't make it last night, make an effort to
attend next week.  It's a guaranteed great time!

 Mark
