Re: [meteorite-list] Question about Norites - Lunar and Diogenite
Hi Mike: Norite is a generic petrologic term for an igneous mafic rock that has primarily orthopyroxene + plagioclase and little or no clinopyroxene. Norites occur on Earth, the Moon, and the HED parent body (as you call Vestan). HED norites are in fact a type of diogenite. Geochemically there is no way you can confuse a HED norite with a lunar norite. For one thing they have totally different Fe/Mn, and of course the oxygen isotopes are totally different. Hope this helps. Carl * Carl B. Hi Mike and List, NWA 773 (and all of its pairings, including my NWA 7007) can be seen on Randy Korotev's lunar meteorite web site. This clan of lunaites is far more complex than originally thought before all of the [launch-paired] meteorites were discovered... http://meteorites.wustl.edu/lunar/stones/nwa0773.htm There are quite a few abstracts published on these, especially a lot of work performed on NWA 7007 at Washington University in St. Louis... Re: [meteorite-list] Question about the chemistry of the Martian atmosphere and Martian meteorites
MikeG, Really good question! When you look at the data there are actually few, if any, martian meteorites that are a perfect match for noble gas isotopes of Viking. They tend to be a mixture of Viking and Earth atmosphere, and there are spallation effects for Ar-isotopes. It has been proposed that ALH 84001 contains ancient martian atmosphere that is different from Viking, especially for Xe. However NWA 7034, which is also ancient (albeit a breccia), has some of the most Viking-like noble gas values. This is not my field so I am treading on thin ice perhaps, but I would say that the picture is still not clear and Earth contamination is always a factor. Also, it is possible that some of the atmospheric gases were implanted at the time of impact that launched the material off Mars (i.e. recent). Carl Agee * Carl B. [meteorite-list] Question about the chemistry of the Martian atmosphere and Martian meteorites
Hi List, The CRE of the various Martian meteorites ranges from just under one million years to almost twenty million years. In terms of overall geologic history, this is a recent window of impact events that has produced the Martian meteorites in our collections. Scientists have confirmed the Martian origin of these meteorites by analyzing trapped atmospheric gases inside the meteorites. However, the composition of the trapped gases is being compared against very recent data (starting with Viking). Does this mean that the Martian atmosphere has not changed in millions of years? Or, do the analyses take into account observed/theorized changes in the atmospheric chemistry? I am a little unclear on this. Re: [meteorite-list] Question re Ad: EXTRA RARE FALLS - Peekskill, New Concord, Barwell, Parnallee, and many more!
Hi Steve, I think you may have a point. However, in this case Michael is correct. This is what happens when you're heading out the door for Tucson to hand deliver meteorites and decide to quickly list some specimens on eBay by using an old listing. It's usually done very quickly and can be a great time saver - simply click on sell similar- and just change the photos and the weight. In this case I didn't proof read the ad. I just returned home and corrected the problem. On Sat, Jan 18, 2014 at 5:44 PM, Steve Dunklee wrote: > I believe nearly all meteorites in some way ar oriented , some more than > others. Hi Rubin, Please allow me to express cicely that in bringing up this issue There is no personal criticism intended, whatsoeverthe issue is Restricted entirely to the subject of the definition of "orientation." Knowing you are a respected and accomplished member of the meteorite community and having concluded from personal interaction That your honesty and integrity are unquestionable I was very surprised to read your description of the NWA 859 specimen included, "oriented." Please tell me what, exactly do you see that I am missing that Would make you describe this specimen (advertized below) as "oriented?" I can only conclude one of two possibilities is at work: 1) I lack a complete understanding of what constitutes orientation or 2) there was an unintended error in composing the description. Re: [meteorite-list] Question about Impact Glass from Crooked Creek
Hello Robert, Again, thank you for your reply and incormation regarding Crooked Creek. I initially thought it was slag as well as it didn't fit with the materials I had found and documemted at the site, but then I recovered a large specimen of the same glass however it was transitioning from rock which has a quench-like texture. A couple days later I recovered additional material that had many of the same characteristics as the specimem in question, yet was stone had floating clast of the same material the glass transitioned from on the large specimen. I do not claim to know what this material beyond previous experience and visual correlation, but the large piece is quite an enigma as it has characteristics of a couple different specimens that are obviously stone and vise versa. I appreciate you responding to my question and hope that we can continue this dialog. My Best, Brandon D. Original message From: Robert Beauford Date: To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Question about Impact Glass from Crooked Creek I have encountered this material during field work. I have a sample in a box here beside my desk, along with a thin section. My sample was dominantly iron, with less glass and less bubbles, but looks pretty clearly to be the same thing. I did some research on it a couple of years ago. The metal portion has no nickel content, and the silicate (glassy) portion is complex in composition, inconsistent with melting of the local carbonates, chert, or quartz arenite sandstones that are found in the brecciated or uplifted Crooked Creek rock units. I believe it to be slag from local mining of iron (about 100 years ago) within the crater and throughout the region. The mined iron is not associated with the meteorite impact. It was emplaced along faults in the region by mineralizing hydrothermal activity, tens of millions of years later, that occurred during the Ouachita Orogeny. They also mined for barite and several other things along faults in and around there. I found evidence for the timing and origin of mineralization associated with the mines recorded in some earlier work by a different author (I think it might have been Hendriks, 1954.) I included more details in a published abstract, though I don't recall how much. Sorry... it was disappointing for me as well. Best regards, Robert Beauford Original message From: Brandon D. [meteorite-list] Question about Meteorite Hunting - Bob Haag?
Hi List, Not long after I first got into meteorites, the Carancas fall happened. Meteorite hunters descended on the area - something we are all familiar with now. Bob Haag went down there and collected some very nice specimens. However, since then, we never hear anything about Bob chasing falls. I don't know Bob. And I haven't had the pleasure of attending the annual Tucson show (yet), so I have never met him or had the opportunity to chat with him. From everything I have heard second-hand, Bob sounds like a personable guy and is very involved with collecting and trading. So, my question is - is Bob officially "retired" from chasing falls? Re: [meteorite-list] Question 1 & 2
Pete, List The Moon BOTH revolves AND rotates One revolution for each rotation; one rotation for each revolution. Synchronous, it's called. The Moon's tides slow the Earth's axial rotation, making the day longer. In the past the day was shorter and the number of days per year was greater Because the angular momentum of the Earth-Moon system must be conserved, the loss of energy from the Earth's rotation is "pumped" into the Moon's orbit causing the Moon to orbit at a greater distance. The Moon slowly recedes from the Earth and is doing so today. It will continue getting further and further away until the Earth either loses the Moon or the Sun eats us both in about five billion years. How fast the Earth rotated when the Moon formed is guesswork (with lots of equations thrown in). 6 hours? 12 hours? How close did the Moon form? Nobody knows, but outside the Roche Limit (about three Earth radii) or it would have broken up from the Earth tides. You shoulda oughta read that Meteorite List: http://www.mail-archive.com/meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com/msg106159.html "The Moon DOES rotate on its axis. If it didn't, we on the Earth would have a slow month-long changing view of every spot on the Moon. There would be no "near" side and "far" side. If you were looking at what we call the near side tonight, in two weeks you would be looking at the "far" side." Sterling K. Hi Melanie, I was lucky enough to get a dinner plate sized 895 gram slice of NWA 869 from Blaine Reed back in 2008. I asked him and the mass he cut to produce it weighed 84 pounds, just short of 40kg. Not sure if anyone out there knows of a larger one. The Metoritical Bulletin just says individual masses to >20kg. Re: [meteorite-list] Question about NWA 869
Just saw Zelimir's informative post from yesterday, if that is what he does for 869, he must have the world's best megadocumebnted collection ;-), like we all aspire. I need a correction to what I just posted a few minutes ago: I gave the amount lost to ablation in the prior post, the correct numbers for the amount dropped as meteorites are as follws and Dean Bessey's estimate for NWA 869 of 7 tons of rocks in the strewn field and fits just right for the diameters/radii given in the paper and by John, diameter (meters)max recoverable mass 0.1 0.14kg 0.3 3.8 0.5 18 1.0 141 1.5 477 2.0 1.1ton 2.5 2.2 3.0 3.8 3.5 6.1 4.0 9.0 4.5 13 5.0 18 Nice to keep these numbers in mind when we think about our well cared for boxes of space chocolates! Hi Melanie, Doug, list, Doug, your reference is very appropriate. In cataloging my collection, in some specific cases, when I feel the meteorite I am describing is important, I use to add a short introduction summarizing its historical and scientific background. Here is my write-up for NWA 869, hoping it be of help to Melanie: -- NWA 869 (Algeria, L3-6 rbr)(S3W1), found 2000, tkw: many++@7+ tons. History and scientific significance. It appears quite clear that meteorite collectors in Northwest Africa have discovered a large L chondrite strewnfield at an undisclosed location, most probably around Tindouf, Algeria. Thousands of stones has been sold under the name NWA 869 in the market places of Morocco and around the world, totaling about 7+ metric tons (April 2008, confirmed by J. Kashuba in: “Meteorite Times, Micro Visions”, March 2010), thereby making it one of the largest tkw’s to come out of NWA. The corresponding meteorid was supposed weighing about 110 tons (4+m in diameter), suggesting important ablation and fragmentation (Metzler et al., LPS, 2008; Welten et al., LPS Conf. abstract, 2010, pp 2611). Individual masses are known to range from <1 g to >20 kg. This meteorite was classified a number of times by different institutions (e.g. L4, that became later L5 –UCLA, also L3.9-6 or L6… brecciated or not), before the above final classification by A. Rubin. It is certain that NWA 869 is paired with other NWA meteorites although no systematic survey has been done. Among many examples cited are NWA 787, NWA 900, SAH 02500 (“Wadi Mellene”), possibly also “AC-001”(see the 2 samples named “NWA-aaa” below still under investigation since its find in 2000) and likely many, many more. One other famous example is NWA 904 (L5 br, also S3 W1), of which the numerous pics reported in MetBull database are strangely similar to those of NWA 869, further confirming the similarity of the samples of both meteorites in this collection . It is also possible that some stones sold as NWA 869 are not part of the same fall, although dealers are confident that most of the known masses are sufficiently distinctive from other NWA meteorites in terms of surface and internal appearance, so that the error rate should be fairly low. Although the source of the NWA 869 samples of this collection is reliable (purchase by "MV" in a Moroccan “selected reliable place” where it has been confirmed that the origin is Algeria, just as for NWA 904 (MV, personal communication), it is suggested (MetBull) that scientists are advised to confirm the classification of any specimens they obtain before publishing results under this name. Much info was published regarding the composition of that strange and very attractive meteorite. When cut and polished, the matrix is full of color and chondrules of all size, some armored. Literature reports 74% gray matrix, 20% light tan (oxide staining) texture (type 5/6 clasts), 4% shock-darkened sulfide-impregnated matrix, 1% type 3 clasts, <1% achondritic textured clasts. J. Kashuba (Met. Times, 03/ 2010) suggests it being a regolith (coarse) breccia (asteroid soil) with chunks > 5.5 cm (Kashuba’s picture in above reference; see also the extraordinary dual lithology of the 27.30 g sample described below), also containing rare foreign carbonaceous fragments. Some pieces also display large metal grains and significant troilite domains (35.42 g sample below). The terrestrial age (4.4 ± 0.7 ky) is consistent with the low degree of weathering, W1. Since the abundance of regolith breccias among L-chondrites is only ~3% [Welten et al., 2010)], NWA 869 represents a rather unique and large sample of the lithified regolith of the L-chondrite parent body - Best wishes, Zelimir MexicoDoug a écrit : NWA 869 represents an L chondritic regolith breccia containing preirradiated components. Hello List, I also have a few large-surface/weight specimens from lucyfi90 and I'm quite pleased with the prep work. A while ago there was some discussion regarding her non-disclosure of weight, which I do not find deterent. With that said, I've weighed a few from her because of simple curiousity, and of course the $/gr was quite higher than usual (one specimen is a stellar NWA801)...and yet the presentation justifies the price every time. Re: [meteorite-list] question
Thanks, Michael, Benjamin! The I suppose it was up to $750/g for the Lunar, pushing it to the limit of the material then. Still a great deal for a relatively small amount and such a large surface area, probably 50% more than others. By looking at the shadow on the graph paper I guess you can get a better idea of how thin they are.. In some cases though, it is desireable for for passing light through inclusions in specimens to get such a nice uniform slice and hopefully this seller can concentrate their talents there which will return the maximum value for the community, IMO, instead of setting up $/g buyers for a hard lession ;-) Kindest wishes Doug -Original Message- From: Benjamin P. She shipped my piece from within the USA, and it was shipped rather quickly. But I think she had a bad incident with the postal service mangling one of her shipments once before, so now she ships piece(s) in what amounts to an insulated small wooden crate inside a box!(again, at least that's was what I got), the best packaging job ever! Which is good because we are talking about very thin slices here. I received mine in perfect condition. She is also very easy to communicate with. I would recommend her. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Speaking of Kentucky, at 5:41 AM August 7 there was an exceptionally bright bolide witnessed by me just south of Louisville, to the north at 20 degrees NNW. I thought, that might just have been barely bright enough to produce a small meteorite. At a truck stop, I asked if anyone else had seen it, hoping to note in which direction from their locations so that I could get a triangulation and zip to that neighborhood for a look-see. But people don't look up much anymore I guess; no bites. So I continued back to Ohio. Anyway, to the financial thread on the table, suppose I deposit a foreign check. Regardless of the stupid hold-em games banks play, how long is it before I can be reallt really really sure the check really really really cleared? Re: [meteorite-list] Question meteoritesaler.com
Hi Adam, This looks one of those rapidly thrown-together Wordpress sites. It's probably not even monitored by a real person. They probably have bots scanning the web for meteorite tags and reading RSS feeds of websites to get their prices. This doesn't explain why the prices are wrong, but the site smells of contrivance to me. Their network Who-Is info has been cloaked. I would wager that the same person(s) probably have a dozen or more sites like this that are geared towards different types of collectibles or auctions. It is aggravating to see sites like this poaching copyright material and damaging the market by misquoting prices. My advice - file a complaint with their webhosting company about improper use of copyrighted material. A reputable hosting site will pull the site down for a TOS violation. The DNS servers are "mediatemple.net" and the domain name was purchased through "namecheap.com" I can't readily tell who the host is though. Does anybody know how to contact the person(s) that run this website: http://meteoritesaler.com They have been publishing copyrighted material and some of the closing auction prices are inaccurately and ridiculously low. I had a customer thinking I was asking too much, even when offering an item way below wholesale because of this website. It is hard enough to break even these days and I don't need a site publishing inaccurate auction results. Re: [meteorite-list] question eBay meteorite sellers?????
Hi Shawn and List, The last time I listed anything on eBay was last Friday and I did see the option, maybe it was just removed in the last few days, or a temporary 'glitch'?? I have a different issue with eBay but I understand why they do not allow it, more fees in their pockets. The issue is that when I want to offer a Met-List or IMCA Member discount on an item that has been purchased on eBay from me, eBay will not allow you to issue a discount on the invoice, I have to wait until full payment is made and then issue a partial refund in PayPal (or personal check), when using PayPal you can issue a partial refund on their payment, but can not include the eBay auction number or else you get an error message stating you can not, 'treat your customers with a discount'. Oh well, eBay can keep their fees, I am happy to offer discounts to my valued friends and customers!! Hello Listers, I have a question and was wondering any of you eBay meteorite sellers might be experiencing the same problem on eBay. The question When you post an auction you have the option to list in the UK market for a small fee in the check out section of the auction. But in the past week this option is gone. This has happened once before and was a glitch on the UK side is this a glitch again or is this option gone for good? Please let me know cause the eBay staff are need I say more lol. Re: [meteorite-list] Question - meteorites returned from Moon
The sample described in the McSween paper is Bench Crater. There are also a few iron fragments that are probably iron meteorites, but they have not been officially designated. There are probably additional small meteorites waiting to be discovered. Quoting tracy latimer : Is this a third meteorite fragment, distinct from Hadley Rille and Bench Crater?
