Re: [meteorite-list] (AD?SALE) Tucson invite
Thank you Mike for the kind reminder. There are boxes piled up all over my living-room, tomorrow morning the huge white Suburban is getting loaded, and I am driving out of Denver (where it is snowing right now!). I expect to be in warm sunny Tucson late afternoon on Wednesday. A couple days to set up everything, and I will be ready to see all of you by Saturday. And I have so much to show you!! in addition to my normal inventory and thin-sections, there is that old collection that I bought recently, lots of extremely rare pieces there, ever heard of Osseo, Bridgewater, Cacaria (was used as an anvil), Forsyth County, Orange River, or Okahandja. And this is just to name a few. Lots of them have been sold already, but there is still plenty to choose from. As you might have heard, Dorothy Norton finished recently the book Richard was working on when he left us so abruptly. The book is called “What’s so Mysterious about Meteorites?”, it will be available in my room during the show, and Dorothy has gracioulsy accepted to be there Saturday afternoon from about 2 to 4, February 9 to sign her book. Please do come meet her. Just Remember: Hotel Tucson City-Center (ex Innsuites), at Ste Marie's and Granada. Room 322, upstairs, just south of the swimming pool, from 10am to 6pm (or a bit later) everyday. See you all very soon. Anne M. Thanks for all the words of encouragement from so many of you and also to those that have or are helping with this. I will do everything I can to make sure this is something special. I am up to $900 of the amount needed to get the doors open. I should be meeting to view the lease agreement this coming week and with luck, paying the deposit and rent for the first 2 months. After that, power, cleaning, water, security/alarm system and minor work will be needed to open the doors. My goal is to have this open in October, which will be an event. There will be guest speakers, refreshments and some really cool surprises in store. I am looking to have the radio station and local news media cover this. Getting the word out there is the main thing that will be needed to keep this running. With the plans I have, it will do well if I can get the people to it wait.. its that voice again... "If you build it, they will come" Hope everyone is doing well, and many thanks again to all those helping, I could not do it without you guys!! You know, the meteorite museum idea is a phenomenally wonderful philanthropic gesture and contribution to the meteorite community. I've spoken with Greg at length about it, and he's very excited. He's also a realist. He knows it could fail easily, but he's willing to take the risk. I've heard some rather negative remarks about the museum from some but still I think it's a good idea, if done right. Can you think of a better idea, or why this shouldn't or couldn't be done? Here's what I see. IF it takes off in the small town, it would most probably work in a larger city. IF it survives the first year in the small town, it could easily be moved to a slightly more populated area. Year 2 or 3 could see the museum moved to a larger city like nearby Charlotte Charlotte is a larger city who's population could easily support a meteorite museum As the success continues to build over time, more institutions and private collectors could help support this museum network by donating the funding needed and loaning meteorites to the museum(s) for display and study. The museum could be also be expanded and supported in part by locating it near Universities in other larger cities throughout the USA. Universities could have a meteorite study programs alongside any astronomy related education currently part of their curriculum Cooperation and participation by Universities and collectors could create a foundation upon which an entire meteorite museum network could be founded. The opportunity for growth and outreach to communities and students of astronomy related studies and meteoritics is phenomenal Keep in mind, if he can make it work in this economy, in a small town, with very little funding, it could be the catalyst from something much grander and more educationally fulfilling than anyone could imagine. But it will take the efforts of many people working together to make it happen. Meteorites for display/loan to the museum could come from any number of sources. There are literally tens of thousands of meteorites in institutional and private collection that could be loaned or donated to the museum. More than enough to fill 50 small meteorite museums in 50 capitol cities! Placing the museums close to Universities would help alleviate some fears of lost material, which at the same time allowing much of the material that's currently locked away in specimen drawers to the viewed and enjoyed by the public thereby creating one of the largest meteorite outreach programs in the history of meteorites. What better way to do that than with a meteorite museum that if successful could reach millions of people in every capital city in every state of our great union. The potential for education, and propagation of knowledge of meteoritics would be unmatched. What better name for such a museum, than one being named after our beloved and much respected Norton and Nininger. There's a risk sure, but the reward far outweighs any risk of loss, funding, or lack of interest. If this fails, it's not because Greg didn't try... Re: [meteorite-list] [AD] Sale, Closing eBay Store, eBay Hijinks, etc.
Hi Geoff and fellow victims of 'fleabay', Geoff I agree with you 100% and I am also seriously thinking of closing my ebay store. I have already moved from 215 items recently to just 45 items currently. I started moving all the inexpensive items out right after eBays ridiculous rate hike. Unfortunately I just recently pointed all the links on my website to eBay. This was an attempt to recoup some of my losses by getting ebays silly 'referral credit'. Now I dont know what to do since ebay has sunk web search engines by buying up all the keywords options. For small businesses who cant afford to compete this is disaster. PUTTING ME IN THE SAME CLASS AS JOEL WARREN and MIKE CASPER Well, seeing as how you saw fit to send this message to everyone 7 times - AND you DID promise to not post any more sale ads to the list ever again (not more than a week or so ago) i think it would be a disservice to joel warren and mike casper to have them associated with you. I'd add your email addy to my spam list, but unfortunatly all of the emails from other people that respond to your garbage would still get through, making the point pretty much moot. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

I wasn't trying to degrade the fall, just adding that I thought if was fishy about their urgency for me to "buy now" yesterday. I had the same thoughts that more will, and is, starting to come out, and quickly now. In fact, I just got back home to another email from someone in Morocco I do not even know asking what he should pay for 1.5 kilos of the new fall available to him. I was one of the ones who got caught paying too much for Amgala, but no worries, I have a lot of great smaller individuals. My guess is that some of the material Mike and myself have turned down is what may be circulating to others so we should not add all of those figures into the TKW. However, I am simply trying to avoid some of the hard-feelings and problems that past falls in that area have caused, namely the huge initial price, then the collapse as more and more comes out and many dealers get it and start trying to outsell the others by dropping the price like a rock.
