Re: [meteorite-list] Another crazy bidder on ebay

2011-01-03 Thread Notkin

Dear Listees:

New Year's greetings. I hope you all enjoyed the holiday weekend. I
had a wonderful time up in Phoenix with my girlfriend.

About a year ago, Steve and I did a radio interview about our TV
series for Slice of SciFi, which is based in Phoenix. I have since
done two more interviews for the same station and became great friends
with the hosts. They invited us up to their winter party and it was a
blast. Science Fiction fans among you should definitely check out
their show; it's outstanding (and very funny!):

http://www.sliceofscifi.com

As a result, I took the rather unusual step of not following my emails
over the weekend, and came home to read all this business about my
Ebay auction. So, here is the deal:

Both the high bidders are not only customers of mine, but also
friends. One is an experienced collector and a very popular member of
the community; the other is a new collector and also, fairly
obviously, new to Ebay. If either party wishes to withdraw their bids
on the Bassikounou, it's fine with me, and no hard feelings. I'm also
happy to close the auction and start it again from scratch if either
bidder requests that I do so. Further, if anyone still thinks there is
anything questionable about this auction, please email me off-List and
I will ask both bidder's permission to provide their names and email
addresses and you can do your own verification.

Apologies from Don and Greg both accepted.

FYI: when someone makes an accusation on the List, not only does it go
out to hundreds people around the world, but it also gets permanently
archived in the Meteorite Central database. In other words, as long as
the Internet is around there will now be a bunch of searchable posts
linking my name and my Ebay auctions to accusations of shill bidding.
That doesn't make me real happy, so it's maybe a good idea to do a
little fact checking, and to think twice, before posting something
inflammatory.

Anyway, to end on a positive note there is one really extraordinary
offering among my current auctions and I invite you all to take a
look. It is a 91.5-gram Sikhote-Alin shrapnel specimen with a superb
impact pit. The pit has a well-formed splash rim and is 17 mm in
diameter! I believe it is the second-largest impact pit I've ever seen
on a Sikhote-Alin:

Looks like the bidder w/93 is on auto-bid. His max bid is probably higher
still.
I must say, that's a lovely looking specimen Geoff's offering. Beautiful
rollover lip.

I'm afraid I won't be able to join in on the bidding though. ;^)

And he just got outbid by a bidder with 93 feedbacks! I never complain
about situations like this. Bidding wars bring in badly needed income
during the Great Recession when you're lucky to sell anything at any

The fact that one individual bidder has 0 feedback and that many bids on one
item in that span of time, leads me to feel that maybe a form of bid rigging
is taken place. At least that's what would catch my eye and put my guard up.
Now that the price is where the seller wants it, it would not surprise me
that Mr. 0 feedback will not bid again. If I was the high bidder I would
retract my bid this way Mr. 0 would be high bidder! I could be wrong on all
this but I have seen this game before on several occasions.
Here is a link to a news source in which an eBay bidder was arrested and

bidding rigging!

Re: [meteorite-list] Another crazy bidder on ebay

2011-01-02 Thread Jason Utas
Carl, All,
For those who apparently don't know how to read the bidding statistics
on a given page, the important thing to look at is the time at which a
bid was placed -- not the order in which it appears on the list.

The current top bid, held by 3***g( 93), was placed on December 31st,
at ~10:30am PST.
a***a( 419) tried to outbid 3***g( 93) twice the next day (Jan. 1),
placing bids of $50 and $60.
At this point, s***t( 0 ) placed no fewer than 14 bids, the last of
which was for $180. This drove the price to $182.50, which...makes
sense, since the bid increment up to $250 is $2.50.

This looks like a typical example of someone bidding an item up. But
since we all know Geoff and he does have good standing, it would be
strange to accuse him of anything without evidence of some sort.

It's probably just someone who doesn't understand how best to use
ebay. Or it could even be a recurrence of our non-paying fellow from
a week or so ago...

Regards,
Jason

Re: [meteorite-list] Another crazy bidder on ebay

2011-01-02 Thread Meteorites USA
Hey Don, Greg, Did you even bother looking at who's auction this is? Do
you realize that the Met-List is a PUBLIC forum? Not just in your email
box...

Maybe you don't mean to associate a reputable member of this communbity
with the practices you mention, but your statements can be seriously
misinterpreted by others. Perhaps showing some thoughtful intelligent
restraint is a good thing here instead of being overly suspicious by
pointing out probably completely unrelated circumstances which could
cause an automatic and mistaken association with one of our communities
most reputable dealers.

It's probably just and overly zealous and extremely excited
inexperienced bidder.

Don't forget, this auction is for an extremely exquisite, flight
oriented, rollover lipped, beautifully fusion crusted meteorite, being
offered by none of than the world famous Geoff Notkin of the Meteorite Men.

Naaa... That couldn't possibly be the reason it's got such high bids.

Regards,
Eric

is taken place. At least that's what would catch my eye and put my guard up.
Now that the price is where the seller wants it, it would not surprise me

granted Geoff's offering is a pristine example of flight orientation of an

Re: [meteorite-list] Another crazy bidder on ebay

2011-01-02 Thread Richard Montgomery
Seems odd that somehow Geoff got mixed up in this discussion. I see this as
nothing more that tv-show groupees seeing a value (perhaps rightly so if
they had discovered the B-meteorites, but even still because of the celeb
status)...for anyone unaware of current $-trends for any Bassikounou, and
never looking into real-collection offering pricings, I can actually see
this happening. (Even Sikhote Alin ~30-40 gram rusty-oily shrapnels were
going for 1$+/gram today, go figure.)

When I originally read the first two posts, Geoff never came to mind, still
doesn't. Certainly shill-bidding didn't. Let's watch the newbees instead.

Carl, All,
For those who apparently don't know how to read the bidding statistics
on a given page, the important thing to look at is the time at which a
bid was placed -- not the order in which it appears on the list.

Regards,
Jason

Geoff is NOT shilling here.
He would simply never be a part of anything like that.
The reason it looks like the *0* feedback bidder bid so many times is
because the bidder with 93 feedbacks bid around 15 times until he was high
bidder. This has nothing to do with any shill or conspiracy. It is simply
how eBay works.
Again ,I say for the record. Geoff is way to cool to be involved in ANY
thing illegal.

 Eric

Hello List and Associates,

Some of us who sell and buy at auction have just fought off an expensive attack
by an unscrupulous pseudo-bidder. It's unnerving to realize someone is out
there in cyberspace intent on, at the least, harming us financially. Worse, he
has succeeded, knowingly or not, in promoting cyancisim amongst us.. Like lions
in a cage that have been prodded with a stick, we whirl and snarl and bite at
every threat real, or imagined.

I'm sure gentleman Geoff understands what's going on and forgives the overspray.
