First thing I would check is:

Look on the wireless tab for the value of the "default forward"

high likelihood for being a "probable cause".

Line of sight is certainly a requirement for 5.8GHz, sort of. By that,
I mean, it depends on exactly what the obstacle is. For a small cell
site, you can usually get away with some obstacles if it is in town,
because you'll get some reflections, which can be useful to 802.11a to
some extent. Trees/foliage create a different scenario. They are BAD,
but not much worse (a little worse) than 2.4GHz. Either way, LOS is
much better.

With 802.11B, and the XR2 cards, you should be able to get away with
this. Use a 24v power supply, though, if it is POE. 18V is ok if you
use power header. I like the pac-wireless antennas. There is an
available Pac antenna that looks like an omni (physically), but is
actually 3 sectors (120*).

Holy smokes! You started a thread!

First thing I would check is:
/interface wireless print

(or winbox WIRELESS->interface tab)

Look on the wireless tab for the value of the "default forward"
parameter. If this is checked, that needs to be unchecked. It is a
high likelihood for being a "probable cause".

I'll read more of this thread to see other suggestions and responses.

Re: [Mikrotik] Poor Performance with RB532 AP

2009-01-23 Thread Kevin Neal
You would be amazed at how far a connector can go.

8 mile link, 5.8, SR5's, RB433, 2' pac antennas on both sides, when setting
this link up one of our technicians didn't have the antenna port setup
correctly. It linked up immediately, we adjusted one side (the one with the
correct setting) to the best signal, then started on the second side.

We didn't see any changes when we were adjusting the second side except when
we were extreme left or right (from the guys arm or the dish getting in
front of our enclosure). We were trying everything, checking cables,
pigtails, replaced the feedhorn and all. We were getting about 2MB through
the link, we finally isolated it to be the antenna port on the wrong
setting.

Afterwards we were both amazed at how it connected and even passed traffic
at 8 miles with an open ufl connector on the radio, through an enclosure.

If those were reversed I would imagine there is no way the card would see
anything more then a few feet away. Is this not for the first/second plug
on the minipci card?

[Mikrotik] 2.4 AP Antenna

2009-01-23 Thread Chris Gotstein
I'm going to be possibly replacing a 9db 2.4Ghz omni as it might have
gone bad. What are most people running for 2.4 omnis? Would i be
better off going to a 12db with 3 degree downtilt? The patterns between
a regular 9db and 12db with 3 degree downtilt look about the same. We
have clients anywhere from a half mile away up to 8 miles away currently.

The reason I use 433 instead of 411 is from the days of the 532 losing
the ethernet half of the poe, but since we just swap the board out
nowadays it seems pointless for the cost. Thanks for pointing that
out!

433ah for sure.

PacWireless and xr2 would be my suggestion but I don't do
anything in 2.4.

Re: [Mikrotik] Poor Performance with RB532 AP

2009-01-23 Thread ccrum
I've seen this exact problem on sectors with heavy interference. Some of
my sectors are picking up as many as 100 other radios (other wisps, home
routers, etc.) spread over all channels. I can tell you that some radios
handle this better than others. Several of my older APs that were still
running Prism based cards really suffered from this. I changed to 8602
Atheros cards and they handle it better, but I even see this problem on
them from time to time. I'd change the radio first. I doubt it is a
cable or antenna issue if you can get it to work on one channel. I'd bet
its interference.

2009-01-23 Thread Chris Gotstein
I'll add a little more to this. Out of the 35 clients that are supposed
to be connecting, i have about 10 that are solid and another 10 that are
flapping on and off, the rest never even come up. Weird part is that
the 10 that are solid are the farther our radios and the ones that are
not connecting at all are the close ones. So is this an antenna problem
or radio problem?

Remember not to rule out the lmr cable. I've had 2-3 go bad on me. The
1-meters from TitanWireless. Connections would just not be there, bad signals,
or just no throughput. Replace that 1-meter cable, and BAM everybody smokin'

The reason I use 433 instead of 411 is from the days of the 532 losing
the ethernet half of the poe, but since we just swap the board out
nowadays it seems pointless for the cost. Thanks for pointing that
