Re: [Mikrotik] Poor Performance with RB532 AP
biggest advantages of the MT is the ability to see what customers are really pulling... if you are running straight 802.11b then the max you are going to see through this is probably around 4mb/s and if your customers are all allowed 1.5mb/s you are going to see frequent times when they are competing with each other. What are you seeing for hidden nodes? What's your physical layout? Are they off a sector or an omni? So much that this could be. Robert Chris Gotstein wrote: We put up a RB532 late last fall to replace a Tranzeo TR6600. We had noticed that on the 6600's that when you get more than 10 people on them, they start performing very poorly. So, the solution that i had been hearing was to move to a mikrotik box. At the time, we purchased a RB532 board and have a SR2 wireless card. Worked great for the first month, and since then it's back to slowing down and we are starting to get complaints about slow speeds, etc. We have about 30 clients attaching to this one box, and they are limited to 1.5mb dl and 384k up. I thought this box would easily handle that many connections and data, but it doesn't seem to be keeping up. I'm running the latest firmware on the board and am running out of ideas to tweak this. Any suggestions? Maybe need to move to a faster box? Ditch MT and go with another AP vendor? ___ ... [Message clipped] -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... For a small cell site, you can usually get away with some obstacles if it is in town, because you'll get some reflections, which can be useful to 802.11a to some extent. Trees/foliage create a different scenario. They are BAD, but not much worse (a little worse) than 2.4GHz. Re: [Mikrotik] Poor Performance with RB532 AP
You would be amazed at how far a connector can go. 8 mile link, 5.8, SR5's, RB433, 2' pac antennas on both sides, when setting this link up one of our technicians didn't have the antenna port setup correctly. It linked up immediately, we adjusted one side (the one with the correct setting) to the best signal, then started on the second side. We didn't see any changes when we were adjusting the second side except when we were extreme left or right (from the guys arm or the dish getting in front of our enclosure). We were trying everything, checking cables, pigtails, replaced the feedhorn and all. We were getting about 2MB through the link, we finally isolated it to be the antenna port on the wrong setting. Afterwards we were both amazed at how it connected and even passed traffic at 8 miles with an open ufl connector on the radio, through an enclosure. -Kevin Neal -Original Message- From: mikrotik-boun...@mail.butchevans.com [mailto:mikrotik-boun...@mail.butchevans.com] On Behalf Of Josh Luthman Sent: Friday, January 23, 2009 12:56 PM To: Mikrotik discussions Subject: Re: [Mikrotik] Poor Performance with RB532 AP If those were reversed I would imagine there is no way the card would see anything more then a few feet away. [Mikrotik] 2.4 AP Antenna
I'm going to be possibly replacing a 9db 2.4Ghz omni as it might have gone bad. What are most people running for 2.4 omnis? Would i be better off going to a 12db with 3 degree downtilt? The patterns between a regular 9db and 12db with 3 degree downtilt look about the same. We have clients anywhere from a half mile away up to 8 miles away currently. -- Chris Gotstein Sr Network Engineer UP Logon/Computer Connection UP 500 N Stephenson Ave Iron Mountain, MI 49801 Phone: 906-774-4847 Fax: 906-774-0335 ch...@uplogon.com ___ Mikrotik mailing list Mikrotik@mail.butchevans.com http://www.butchevans.com/mailman/listinfo/mikrotik Visit http://blog.butchevans.com/ for tutorials related to Mikrotik RouterOS

Re: [Mikrotik] Poor Performance with RB532 AP
I've seen this exact problem on sectors with heavy interference. Some of my sectors are picking up as many as 100 other radios (other wisps, home routers, etc.) spread over all channels. I can tell you that some radios handle this better than others. Several of my older APs that were still running Prism based cards really suffered from this. I changed to 8602 Atheros cards and they handle it better, but I even see this problem on them from time to time. I'd change the radio first. I doubt it is a cable or antenna issue if you can get it to work on one channel. I'd bet its interference. Cameron Chris Gotstein wrote: Got a crew going up the tower today. I'll add a little more to this. Out of the 35 clients that are supposed to be connecting, i have about 10 that are solid and another 10 that are flapping on and off, the rest never even come up. Weird part is that the 10 that are solid are the farther our radios and the ones that are not connecting at all are the close ones. So is this an antenna problem or radio problem? Remember not to rule out the lmr cable. I've had 2-3 go bad on me. The 1-meters from TitanWireless. Connections would just not be there, bad signals, or just no throughput. Replace that 1-meter cable, and BAM everybody smokin' again. -Keith- - Original Message - From: Chris Gotstein Sent: Fri, 1/23/2009 5:47am To: Mikrotik discussions Subject: Re: [Mikrotik] Poor Performance with RB532 AP Nope, now have clients failing to connect on channel 1 as well. Re: [Mikrotik] Poor Performance with RB532 AP
The reason I use 433 instead of 411 is from the days of the 532 losing the ethernet half of the poe, but since we just swap the board out nowadays it seems pointless for the cost. Thanks for pointing that out!
