You can use SNMP for this. We have been using SNMP for Trango AP client
updates/add/removing for a while and it works reliably. We have several
AP's that have up to 120 associated SU's. For Trango clients testing I
had to write a telnet/expect script.

The trango's do lack in the features and flexibility of the bandwidth
management of clients. We have decided to use it only to prevent a
client from saturating a AP's bandwidth, but actual network management
is to be done with a mikrotik and take advantage of their API, and it
looks to be promising.

Re: [Mikrotik] Trango and MT Queues

2009-05-27 Thread Aaron, Network Administrator, Great Lakes Internet
Our user management system is integrated with our central bandwidth
management box. That way if we need to suspend or change the rate a
customer is on we only have to do that in one place. This keeps us from
having to log into an AP every time we make a change to a customer. The
only thing we have to do at the AP is add the customer when we first set
them up.

Unless I'm mistaken MT boxes can be scripted allowing easy remote
changes to the bandwidth queues. I have thus far been unable to find a
way to script the adding and removing of a client on a Trango box.
(Unless of course I want to write a telnet client in PHP. This brings up
a whole new set of challenges as the telnet interface on a heavily
loaded trango AP tends to be difficult to log into. And don't get me
started on the web interface.)

The tradeoff is obviously that the client is not bandwidth shaped until
they hit the edge of the wireless network. But this is a tradeoff we
were willing to make as centralized management of the bandwidth has
significantly reduced errors in billing.

A solution would be transparent traffic shaping bridges scattered
about. MT works for this quite well and wouldn't require you to switch
to routing but you would need to identify where best to place the
traffic shaping boxes in your network.

I haven't used Trangos for CPEs so I haven't played with CIR/MIR but it
doesn't seem as flexible as an MT. I use the burst-thresholds quite a
bit and also do traffic prioritization in my network. If you don't then

I agree with Butch, if it's working using just CIR/MIR then no reason to

add the extra complication of an MT box.

No. 1 tower as 6 APs which feed into the PC running RouterOS. Each AP
has it's own ethernet port and subnet. There are 2 other remote towers
that get feed through one of the APs on the tower, and there is a
separate subnet for each of those towers.

This seems to work fairly well, for the most part the higher bandwidth

Unfortunately I have been unable to find a good way of stopping

any extra load client-to-client communications may place on our network.

Re: [Mikrotik] Trango and MT Queues

2009-05-26 Thread Sam Tetherow
A solution would be transparent traffic shaping bridges scattered
about. MT works for this quite well and wouldn't require you to switch
to routing but you would need to identify where best to place the
traffic shaping boxes in your network.

I haven't used Trangos for CPEs so I haven't played with CIR/MIR but it
doesn't seem as flexible as an MT. I use the burst-thresholds quite a
bit and also do traffic prioritization in my network. If you don't then
I agree with Butch, if it's working using just CIR/MIR then no reason to
add the extra complication of an MT box.

When we add new clients to the Trango AP's we set the MIR to the maximum

256/128.

This seems to work fairly well, for the most part the higher bandwidth
customers get the bandwidth they are paying for without being able to
overload the AP. Lower bandwidth customers get limited by our central
bandwidth shaping device. We have over 60 clients on one Trango AP using
this setup.

Unfortunately I have been unable to find a good way of stopping
client-to-client traffic on a switched network without a massive
redesign of our existing network. Fortunately we do not have too many
problems as our backhauls have enough extra bandwidth to compensate for
any extra load client-to-client communications may place on our network.

Trango will only associate with Trango. The AP and SU must be Trango.

The CIR/MIR feature likely to only work when both AP and CPE are Trango.
It may work for one direction if you change either AP or CPE to another
device. If this feature works well, then I would not worry about using
MT for the queues. If it is not working well, then moving to a more
complete solution (such as the queues and full qos capability on the MT)
would be in order.
