Hi all,

I've been playing with the idea of having a more open mode of communication for
people to participate. Both this mailing list and gitter are very developer
focused (not to mention clunky, when it comes to launchpad). This is not to
propose a replacement of what we have now for development, just complement with
a platform that's easier to join and more user-friendly.

Practically, I was thinking of setting up a discourse.org
instance, either hosted by them or us. What do you all think?

thank you Casey. I’ll look through them this weekend.

Help me understand a couple things:

there won’t be any premining or ICO, correct?

Hi all!

Derek and I are running a logo design contest on 99 designs for Grin.
The logo that wins the design contest isn't guaranteed to become
Grin's logo, but should produce one or more strong options.

There have been a total of 171 (!) submissions to the contest. I've
narrowed them down to 16, which seems like a manageable number to
choose from. You can see them all here:

https://99designs.com/logo-design/contests/mysterious-cryptocurrency-needs-creative-logo-769896/entries

You can see the ones that I've declined, click on the garbage can
icon. If you see something good in there that I declined, please feel
free to ping me with the #.

The next step in the process is to choose 6 finalists, whom we'll work
with to produce the final logo.

I've created two polls with 8 entries each. It would be super awesome
if you voted on your favorite logos and leave comments with what you
think:

https://99designs.com/contests/poll/a166a7025a
https://99designs.com/contests/poll/7838cc187c

My personal favorites at the moment are:

https://images-platform.99static.com/SAVeygZMmUtao8owc4OWfNu5rrU=/filters:quality(100)/99designs-contests-attachments/90/90313/attachment_90313030

The first is nice because the shape is so minimal. It could be used as
a currency mark on its own, similar to $ or ฿. The latter I like
because it's simple and strong.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Best,
Casey

Hi all,

I was thinking about springing for a 99 designs logo design package.
Not to come up with anything final, just to get more options on the
table.

They'll solicit designs from 30 or so designers, and then we can pick
the best one.

Some of the questions that they ask before they solicit entries from
designers are below, please let me know if anyone has any suggestions
for changes/additions/removals. I'll kick the process off tomorrow
night.

Is there anything else you would like to communicate to the designers?

Grin is an in-development cryptocurrency, like bitcoin, that has a
focus on user privacy and efficiency.

I'd like to convey privacy, security, and permanence with the logo.
The Grin project is also somewhat playful in its messaging,
incorporating a somewhat magical, wizards and witches theme, so an
attempt at conveying that would be great too, although without is also
totally fine.

Do you have a slogan you want incorporated in your logo?

No. ("Put your money where your mouth is." would be a funny one though.)

Describe what your organization or product does and its target audience

Grin is a cryptocurrency. Like bitcoin, it allows users to transmit
value across a peer-to-peer network. It's main advantages over bitcoin
are that it has very strong privacy protection, and it is very
efficient.

Grin isn't developed by an organization, per-se. There is a lead
developer, and a number of other contributing developers who write the
code together. Eventually when things are a bit further along, it's
likely that an organization will be created.

What name do you want in your logo?

"grin" all lower case

Pick some color themes.

I went with a blue palette, a dark grey palette, and a "designers
choice" palette.

my first reaction to the globe was that I thought it was a peanut. Other
than that, I think there needs to be better integration between the mark and
the word. They don’t seem to match or compliment yet. I think part of the
problem is the stroke width of the text and globe are different, but not
different enough. Perhaps see what it looks like if you thicken the word to
match the lines in the globe? And then take it the other way.

I love the mustard color though.

Since mailing list activity is light, I thought I'll submit a second
iteration of the globe-with-a-grin concept. Monochrome simplified icon with
a more prominent G letter, same grin; and, same icon but with a secondary
color (arbitrary shade of green). Is anyone else fond of the idea of having
a globe outline which forms a big grin on the bottom half?
