problem with interface packets counters?

2010-07-08 Thread OpenBSD User
Hello,

I'm not sure if this is known issue and whether it should be filed as ticket:

I have two OpenBSD boxes as carp firewalls. Since their installation (4.2) till
today (4.5) they were both freezing seemingly randomly (no response from system,
no errors in logs, nothing). I changed hardware, reinstalled but the freezes are
stil ocurring. My engineer that looked into the issue pointed that
system freezes
were happening in about 35 days from each other and found that packet
counters on one of the interfaces are hitting the integer size about
every 35 days.

My system is:

# uname -a
OpenBSD somehost 4.5 GENERIC#0 i386

the interface in question is:

# netstat  -I em3 -a
NameMtu Network Address Ipkts IerrsOpkts Oerrs Colls
em3 1500some:mac:address 85204764 0 101279901 0 0
em3 1500  10.10.10.1/ 10.10.10.185204764 0 101279901 0 0
em3 1500  fe80::%em3/ fe80::215:17ff:fe 85204764 0 101279901 0 0

My questions are:
- is this known issue (maybe fixed in more recent release)?
- is there a tool to reset these counters from cli?

We're planning to do some testing during service hours and try to repeat
and confirm this problem.

Regards,
Tom

I feel the same way. I've made sure to use
https://https.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/donations to make a donation because that
is still an easy thing to do. I will have to make do with FTP for
installations from now on.

New Installer: Thank you

2010-07-08 Thread Gaby Vanhegan
It's been a while since I've upgraded a box (or ran the installer for that
matter) and this was the first time I used the bsd.rd kernel to do it.

I'd like to give a massive thank you to all the developers who have worked on
the new installer and upgrade documentation, it made upgrading a 4.4 machine
to 4.7 a piece of cake. It's a really smooth process, you can see where the
effort has been spent.

Excellent work guys, keep it up :)

Gaby.

We see it another way. When we used PayPal exclusively people purchased
and _then_ emailed us asking for an address change because they hadn't
bothered to update their PayPal information. 'On top of that' we had
people _not_ wanting to use PayPal but other various methods, bank

Please tell us how to win?

If you had emailed us we would have just taken your order via email and
allowed a PayPal payment... like many others have. I will make this
very, very clear from the home page.

Indeed. If you do the maths you'll see what this means to us.

big shipping costs.

Ordering the CD sets just isn't as much fun anymore as it used to be.

I've bought from the computer shop directly on three occasions, I get
the CDs in the right time and I didn't felt the shipping was that
expensive. In fact, I think it was quite the same.

I'm working near Eyrolles, and I didn't saw OpenBSD sets their for a
long time. Not far from Eyrolles, the excellent book shop le monde en
tique sell them, but they receive them some
times after official release day.

Personnaly I'll keep buying from the Computer Shop. They are nice and
efficient.

I didn't mean to sound rude. It's just that remembering yet another
password for an account I use once or twice a year is really annoying
especially when it could be easier. You could have a form where the
user can enter his address or alternatively hit a "use paypal address"
checkbox or something like that.
I like the KISS principle of the "SpongiForm" ordering system used on
openbsd.org.

> If you had emailed us we would have just taken your order via email and

I didn't know that this was an option. I'm not a big fan of PayPal
either, I had trouble with them in the past. The easiest for me would be
a payement by credit card but I don't know if you can handle that. If
you prefer PayPal it's fine, too.
I will drop you a mail shortly to place the order.

Jona

I would have to agree with your observations. I did order the 4.7
release and some other stuff from openbsdeurope.com, and it was anything
but easy. The stuff did arrive in time though, so with that I have
absolutely no complaint!

Here's a copy of my views on the "user experience" they present. I had
to cram it into a small HTML form window on their site:

8<8<8<8<8< (cut)

Hi!

I just made a purchase of OpenBSD 4.7 and some assorted stuff (order no
xxx), and while struggling with the ordering process I found some bugs
in your system that you might want to look into for improving the
"customer experience".

I don't know how the formatting will work in this small text window, but
here goes:

- Can't enter international phone numbers (+468, +46707), the system
complains of "must enter UK area (01, 02) phone number" (or something
similar) although I've specified Sweden as country.

- Can't use international characters (although you've noted that
yourself already). This is actually more than a nuisance, since these
characters are a natural part of our language. Imagine if someone told
you that you could not use for example the letters E, S and P, wouldn't
you find that highly disruptive?

- Can't check the box for delivery insurance until I've clicked "I have
read and agree to the terms of sale" (for the SECOND TIME!), and that
click box is on the very lowest portion of the page. Unintuitive! And
please don't make the customer agree to the terms of sale more than once.

- The URL to the Terms of sale (on both pages where one should agree to
them...) is incorrect, yielding an error page on my browser.

This is the one you link to that doesn't work:

http://www.shop.openbsdeurope.com/terms.html

Either of these work:

http://www.openbsdeurope.com/terms.html

http://shop.openbsdeurope.com/terms.html

- On the final "Payment Details" page, you state the transaction fee
when paying via Bank Transfer to be GBP -2.11, a negative value. I
seriously doubt you will refund me GBP 2.11 if I pay by Bank Transfer. :-)

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments.

Perhaps, but the machine did not have this issue on 4.6 from just a
couple of months ago. This box NEVER freezes--UNLESS I run either of
these two commands (so far). I can recompile the kernel and userland
multiple times with nary a hiccup.

> Tried different NICs? RAM? Put the HD in another machine?

No. With it being an older notebook and having three NICs, I'm a bit
limited in my flexibility and recreating the same environment on
another machine for an extended period of time.

Since it's for home use, but probably elaborate home use, maybe. I
have multiple NICs, VLANs, pppoe, pflog, nfdump, named--it's also my
personal web server and is doing some minor nfs.

Re: Ordering CDs in Europe becoming increasingly difficult

2010-07-08 Thread Kevin Chadwick
Worked fine fro me in firefox at 4.7 release time, though I couldn't get
the order placed via my symbian phones browsers. After a few tries I got
through to visa verification and then it went nowhere. Not sure if
that's visas fault, as I usually avoid using my phone for ordering.

tcpdump no output on stdout

2010-07-08 Thread Marian Hettwer

 Hi all,

I'm experiencing a rather strang behaviour with tcpdump on OpenBSD 4.7
i386 running on a vmware esx vsphere 4.
My tcpdump gives no output at all on stdout, but if I use the very same
command with "-w foobar" it actually does dump packages.

I know that esx server are probably not supported, however, does anybody
know a work around this behavior? Or out of curiosity, where is this
behaviour coming from?

See below:

[r...@openlb38-1] <~> # tcpdump
tcpdump: listening on em0, link-type EN10MB
^C
198 packets received by filter
0 packets dropped by kernel

aah, 198 packets I couldn't see... hm hm...

[r...@openlb38-1] <~> # tcpdump -w foobar
tcpdump: listening on em0, link-type EN10MB
^C
211 packets received by filter
0 packets dropped by kernel
[r...@openlb38-1] <~> # ls -l foobar
-rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  16278 Jul  8 18:42 foobar
[r...@openlb38-1] <~> #

When I load that file in wireshark, I can certainly see the expected
packets.

Does that make sense?!

Some details to the system:

I'm not sure how useful it would be but 1) don't use softdeps, 2) don't use
the raw device, 3) nice the process to +20. 4) report back if it works...

To which they replied:

I admit that I'm a bit ignorant here, as I've myself never
administered an SSL web site, but I am not convinced by this: Doesn't
the above just mean that it switches to HTTPS *after* transmitting my
information in the clear? Or can someone else explain if and/or how
the above is sane?

I find having to deal with another password and account and having to
trust another person to safeguard my personal information they keep on
file and online long after the order is fulfilled much more annoying
than having to type in my address and payment details again. Some
people find it more convenient to create additional accounts, or even
log in with their Google or Facefook accounts (gah! yeuch!). If
anything, it should be my choice whether I want to do that.

/my 2 cents

I posted an ioprbs(4) patch to tech@ early last week in need of

If I don't hear back from anyone, I'll be removing I2O support (i.e.,
iop(4), iopsp(4), and ioprbs(4)), so I suggest you speak up now if
you're still using it.

Instead of asking people to guess what's happening based on your
observation of what you think your browser is doing, wouldn't it make
sense to just watch your network traffic and know for certain?

Odd hw.setperf quirk

2010-07-08 Thread Joe Gidi
I was just given an HP machine that shows a little quirk in 'sysctl
hw.setperf':

hw.machine=amd64
hw.model=Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz
hw.ncpu=2
hw.byteorder=1234
hw.pagesize=4096
hw.disknames=sd0,cd0
hw.diskcount=2
hw.cpuspeed=2493
hw.setperf=99
hw.vendor=Hewlett-Packard
hw.product=HP Compaq dc7900 Ultra-Slim Desktop
hw.serialno=2UA9461120
hw.uuid=32ef50ee-e109-de11-bbda-5548b4800026
hw.physmem=1015681024
hw.usermem=1015603200
hw.ncpufound=2

None of my other machines have ever shown hw.setperf=99; they always boot
up at 100. It's not a problem, just a little quirk. The machine runs fine
and SpeedSteps properly with apmd. Running 'sysctl hw.setperf=100' bumps
up hw.cpuspeed to a displayed value of 2500. Has anyone seen this kind of
behavior before?

Thanks for the ACPI suspend+resume work!

2010-07-08 Thread Josh Rickmar
A big thank you to everyone who has been working on the ACPI code!
Suspend and resume now work nearly flawlessly on my Thinkpad T500 (dmesg
below) on the July 8 current snapshot. The only thing I've noticed is
that my iwn(4) wifi connection doesn't automaticaly reconnet, but that's
minor.

Make sure you run apmd(8).
Then create /etc/apm/resume with executable bit:

8<-
#!/bin/sh
#

ifconfig iwn0 down
ifconfig iwn0 up
8<-

This makes my iwn(4) comes back on resume.

That is a workaround. Please don't discourage people from pushing
to get it fixed properly, in the driver.

(Yes, I know... this is a more difficult driver to fix...)

Could be blocked on looking up hostnames. Try "tcpdump -n"

usb memory stick failing

2010-07-08 Thread patrick keshishian
Hi,

I recently attempted an installation from a usb memory stick, where
installation of xfont47.tgz failed consistently due to "crc error"[0].
The stick was prepared following steps from OBSD FAQ[1].

I recopied xfont47.tgz file to the stick, and confirmed (or so I
thought) that the source and new copy of this file were identical
using cmp(1).

Restarting the install bombed on the same file. So I stuck the stick
in my source computer and mounted it and ran md5(1) on it. Sure enough
the checksum is different from the source. I did a umount(8) and a
mount(8), then ran md5(1) again, and this time yet a new value was
reported. While mounted, running md5(1) again reports the same value
-- i assume this is because the file is cached at this point --
explaining why cmp(1) initially failed to raise a flag. Every
umount(8), mount(8) and md5(1) gives a new result:

$ md5 /mnt/umass/usr/build/rel/xfont47.tgz
MD5 (/mnt/umass/usr/build/rel/xfont47.tgz) = 75e6065782783455bfcf912ec8822ec3
$ sudo umount /mnt/umass/
$ sudo mount /dev/sd0a /mnt/umass/
$ md5 /mnt/umass/usr/build/rel/xfont47.tgz
MD5 (/mnt/umass/usr/build/rel/xfont47.tgz) = 3912b5506b63c105a945fe7535d6e70e
$ md5 /mnt/umass/usr/build/rel/xfont47.tgz
MD5 (/mnt/umass/usr/build/rel/xfont47.tgz) = 3912b5506b63c105a945fe7535d6e70e
$ sudo umount /mnt/umass/
$ sudo mount /dev/sd0a /mnt/umass/
$ md5 /mnt/umass/usr/build/rel/xfont47.tgz
MD5 (/mnt/umass/usr/build/rel/xfont47.tgz) = 315233c616a824057b2558d678aed2c4

This is a bit of an odd behavior to me. Does anyone have an
explanation for this?

Incidentally, should the install script not catch the error condition
and warn the user of the incomplete install at the next prompt?
