OpenBSD recommendations on HW

2006-04-09 Thread Lasse Bach

Hi,

I'm considering buying a wireless ethernet adapter for an OpenBSD box.
If course I have checked which cards are supported by OpenBSD.

But I think it would be nice if the OpenBSD developers would setup a page
telling which hardware the developers recommends in terms of that the
manufactures have released documentation for the hardware.

I personnaly would prefer hardware from vendors who release
documentation for

their hardware.

I have no idea if this takes too much work, or if anyone even likes the
idea.

But it would also shed some light on which manufactures are releasing
hardware

documentation for their products, and who isn't.

Wireless NIC for soekris 4801

2006-04-20 Thread Lasse Bach

Hi all,

I wrote a message about OpenBSD hardware recommendations some time ago.
As I said I was going to buy a wireless NIC for an OpenBSD box.
Well, the box is a soekris 4801 which is going to act as an wireless router.

Does anyone have any HW recommendations on that and should it be PCI or
MiniPCI?

Thanks in advance

Linksys support... hmm

2006-04-30 Thread Lasse Bach

Hi folks,

I have been writing Linksys because i need to know if the v5 of
their WMP54G wireless NIC can be used with the ral driver.

Here's an abstract of the mail:

Me asking:
"I also need to know if v5 of the WMP54G uses a Ralink Technology RT25x0
chip?"

Linksys answering:
"I apologize but we are not allowed to disclose any information
regarding the
chipsets of any of our devices. Besides, we do not have any access with
those

information. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience."

Wtf is that? How can that be a secret?

Maybe someone on the mailing list can provide me with an answer to:
1. Can v5 af the card be used with the ral driver?
2. Why are such information not available to their customers?

Thanks,
Lasse Bach

Intel gigabit 82541PI

2006-07-28 Thread Lasse Bach

Hi.

I'm looking for some gigabit netcards. And I was checking up on if the
Intel 82541PI is supported by OpenBSD.
Looking through the supported hardware for i386 page I found that
"i82541" is supported in the gigabit section.
Looking in the em(4) manpage I found that a series of 82541's is
supported. But the PI is not listed.

Anyone knows if this card is supported or does anyone recommend another
card?

Thanks,
Lasse Bach

Re: Intel gigabit 82541PI

2006-08-02 Thread Lasse Bach
Hi Stuart.
I received the NIC today.

The chip is found and seems to be working well, caught with the 82541GI
driver as you said.
I'm running 3.9 release.
The chip is a 82541PI as my supplier stated.

I don't know if the man page should be updated, or if anything else is
needed.
I'll be available if you need any further information.

A dmesg is attached.

Thanks for your help.
