Re: "Available disks are: none" on Sony Vaio SVZ13115GGXI

2016-01-31 Thread Paul de Weerd
Hi Naddy,

I need to verify this, but I believe things stop working (i.e. kernel
boots but no longer gets to userland because no block device is found)
when i switch modes in the BIOS. This suggests that the PCI ID *does*
change when fiddling around in the BIOS. I'm not at home for a couple
of days, I'll follow up when I have access to my Sony again.

"lspci -v" from a working OS with it set to non-raid mode would be
useful (or pcidump -v, if you can boot a copy of OpenBSD installed
on a USB device etc).

AFAIK generally we try *not* to match the RAID mode IDs to avoid
damage to disks with existing RAID configurations..

Re: "Available disks are: none" on Sony Vaio SVZ13115GGXI

2016-01-31 Thread Ben Alex
Paul, thanks for the patch. It worked!

Jonathan, thanks for fixing the model identifier in CVS.

Christian and Stuart, my Vaio (model and BIOS versions earlier in
thread) does not have any BIOS setting for non-RAID mode. The Intel
storage controller BIOS only allows the two 128 GB drives to be
configured as a "RAID volume" or as "non-RAID disks".

As per my original post, with CVS -current no disk is detected
regardless of drive configuration (RAID or non-RAID mode). The dmesg
reports the same in both modes: pciide0 at pci0 dev 31 function 2
"Intel 82081HBM RAID" rev 0x04: DMA, channel 0 wired to native-PCI,
channel 1 wired to native-PCI.

With Paul's patch:

When configured as a RAID 0 volume, install will detect two 128 GB
drives. Completing the install and rebooting returns a partition not
found error.

When configured as "non-RAID disks", install will detect two 128 GB
drives. Completing the install and rebooting is successful. Below is
the resulting dmesg.boot and pcidump.txt.

Hi Ben,

Upon another close inspection of your dmesg and mine, I don't think
the below diff will work for you...

This is in my machine:

| + { PCI_VENDOR_INTEL, PCI_PRODUCT_INTEL_82801HBM_RAID,
| + NULL, ahci_intel_attach },

And this is in yours:

| | pciide0 at pci0 dev 31 function 2 "Intel 82081HBM RAID" rev 0x04: DMA,
| | channel 0 wired to native-PCI, channel 1 wired to native-PCI
| | pciide0: using apic 0 int 22 for native-PCI interrupt

Although they look quite the same, 82081 != 82801. Sorry :(

You could try adding the product id of your controller to ahci.c much
like I did in my diff and try that. Good luck!

"Available disks are: none" on Sony Vaio SVZ13115GGXI

2016-01-28 Thread Ben Alex
This laptop has 2 x Samsung 128 GB SSD drives and a RAID controller
which reports as "Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Option ROM version
11.0.0.1339)".

OpenBSD 5.7, 5.8 and current (20160125) installers each report
"Available disks are: None".

Available system BIOS settings (XHCI Mode, Execute Bit Capability) and
RAID BIOS settings (non-RAID, RAID) have been toggled without success.

Windows recovery was used to upgrade the system BIOS to the latest
available version, R0092C6. The prior version (R0091C6) behaved the
same.

Linux and FreeBSD detect the drives and permit partitioning. dmesg
output from both OpenBSD and FreeBSD are below.

Any suggestions appreciated.
