Re: [mk2-16v] Tire Rack + mount and balance tires locally... worth it?

2015-11-09 Thread Steven Arguello
I wonder all the time about that. If you have the tires rotated and balanced
once a year it's probably worth it. I only use Tire Rack when I'm picky about
what tires I'm buying, now that's just with my GTi. All other cars, whatever's
cheapest/easiest. I've been to 4 or 5 different places in the past 10 years and
I'd say that they're all pretty much the same.

Anyone else buy tires at Tire Rack then wonder if it would have been better to

for mounting and balancing when tires are purchased from them?

RE: [mk2-16v] Tire Rack + mount and balance tires locally... worth it?

2015-11-09 Thread Larry Velez
Some places will match Tire Rack’s prices if you bring them the print out – but
not all or they will say they don’t carry that tire. The lifetime balance
sounds good but I keep hearing horror stories from neighbors about Tire Choice.
I have been to Kauffman but was not super impressed. These places seem like
churn and burn and have low margins and it shows, they are pressed to move cars
in and out.

Personally I went to http://www.advanceperformance.com/ here in Tampa which had
some nice cars they were working on (the place is not as impressive as the
website makes it seem) and were very cool but definitely ended up spending more
than I would have at one of the chain places.

Two words - shop around. I've had it go both ways. I used to have a place I
always used for mounting/balancing and alignment, because they had the
latest top of the line equipment, and were racers. Sometimes they had tires
I wanted for less than The Rack, but usually The Rack had the better price.

Cost for mounting and balancing was about $15 per tire.

2015-11-09 Thread 'Matthew Yip' via MK2-16v
Ironically I've been tempted by but have never used Tire Rack. My local tyre
shop supports all sorts of local car clubs which is a rarity these days
especially with the big name tyre chains taking over the marketplace. The owner
and I have talked about pricing many times and his reply is that he simply
cannot beat Tire Rack's price but he can come close. More importantly, he
employs local people and he supports local clubs - not that Tire Rack doesn't
support programs but as much as I'm a curmudgeon, I'd rather keep my money
local.
