Re: [WikimediaMobile] New “On this day” service and location data in summaries

2017-02-15 Thread Jon Katz
Congratulations to those involved! This will enable important (and asked
for) features for our users, and another step in the right direction
technically as we leverage more services across multiple platforms and the
broader ecosystem.

The docs could use some spelling control :)

[WikimediaMobile] New “On this day” service and location data in summaries

2017-02-14 Thread Corey Floyd
A couple updates for the Mobile Content Service and RESTBase:

A new MCS service was deployed yesterday that returns events, holidays,
birth and deaths. This service is powered using Wikipedia contributed by
our volunteers. It currently works for EN, DE, FR, SV (with rollout to more
languages being planned).

For example, to see today’s births:
https://en.wikipedia.org/api/rest_v1/feed/onthisday/births/02/14
(Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_14)

Even better, it returns the curated list selected anniversaries:
https://en.wikipedia.org/api/rest_v1/feed/onthisday/selected/02/14
(Source:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Selected_anniversaries/February_14)

For more information, check out the docs:
https://en.wikipedia.org/api/rest_v1/#!/Feed/aggregatedFeed_0

Thanks to Monte and Bernd for working on this and creating a very useful
endpoint!

Another minor, but useful improvement made earlier this month was the
inclusion latitude and longitude in RESTBase summaries by Petr:
https://en.wikipedia.org/api/rest_v1/page/summary/atlanta

Special thanks to Petr, Marko and the rest of the Services team for all
their help and consultation. They continue to be great partners for the
Reading team and their contributions have been key to so much of our work
over the past year.
