[Mobile.AI] Hike Messaging ap

2013-06-03 Thread waseem
Hi all,

Don't know about the accessibility just got the info.

Instant messaging (IM) has become a trend these days especially with the
youth. A trend, pioneered by the immensely popular WhatsApp IM application,
others like Nimbuzz and Samsung's proprietary ChatON messenger are trying to
follow suit as well.

The latest entrant in this genre is Hike, a communication app that offers
both instant messaging and SMS under one roof. Developed by Bharti Softbank,
a 50-50 partnership between India's Bharti Telecom and Japan's Softbank
telecom provider, the app is the brainchild of Kavin Bharti Mittal.

A cross platform messenger app, Hike is similar to WhatsApp but is better in
the sense that it also allows users to communicate over SMS, which is
certainly a big advantage for those who do not have access to mobile
Internet or data on the-go and for communicating with your friends without
Hike app from within the same app.

That said, we played around with the app a bit on the iOS and Android
platforms to see what is refreshing about it that has made it the No.1 Top
Free app in the Google Play Store (It is placed at the third position under
Top Free apps in the India Apple App Store).

Let the SMS-ing begin!
Hike offers messaging in three different ways. Hike-to-Hike messaging with
other phones is unlimited and free worldwide. Second, you can communicate
with other smartphone users who don't have Hike via SMS, which is only
restricted to India at the moment. Finally, you can message any other phone
user via SMS. But beware, if you constantly bug another user with Hike, they
are given a code that they can use to block you.

On the bright side, each Hike user gets 100 Free Hike SMS every month to
message those friends who aren't on Hike., which gets replenished each month
and in case any friend joins the app on your request via SMS, you get 10
Free SMS extra and the company will also be awarding each user with 50 free
SMS per month for each friend they have invited to Hike. Other ways of
inviting friends are through Facebook, Twitter and email.

Furthermore, Hike users will also be rewarded one-time SMS bonuses of 100
each for connecting to Twitter and Facebook and the company plans to keep
offering such bonuses time and again. These one-time bonuses will be valid
for life until you run out of them.

Getting started and user interface
The user interface of Hike is very clean, simple and basic with pleasant
hues of white and blue. Once you've downloaded the app, you'll be prompted
to enter your mobile number. While the iOS version sends a 6-digit
verification code via SMS that expires within a minute (reminiscent of
Google Authenticator), the Android version simply greets you to the welcome
screen asking you to enter your name and complete the registration. This is
then followed by a tutorial of the app's basics.

Also, as soon as you enter the app, an Inbox message welcomes you with a
reward of Rs.10. Every time you successfully invite a friend via SMS you
earn credit of an additional Rs.20. In order for you to earn rewards, your
friends must download and activate the app soon after you invite them.

Features and usage
Hike-to-Hike communication via instant messaging has features such as group
chat and photo and video sharing, which are right up there with any top
smart IM app. Group chats can be initiated by an icon in the top right
corner while a '+' icon on the bottom right can be used to send a new
message. The app supports various audio and video formats and uploads up to
6MB for each file.

That said, we experienced almost instantaneous responses over a stable
Internet connection, especially with group chat that works pretty well and
so does the image and video transfer. This is, of course, dependent on
Internet connection speeds.

Using the app is fairly simple. The app smoothly integrates your entire
existing phone contacts. You can access various menu options such as Home,
Invite Friends, Free Messaging and more by swiping left. Swiping right
reveals Search bar along with Favourites and Friends on Hike.

We couldn't help but notice this functionality as being very similar to
Facebook Messenger. Another feature resembling Facebook's Poke is 'Nudge'.
You can 'Nudge' a friend by double tapping anywhere in their conversation
screen.

Once you send a message you can see sent (S), delivered (D), read and typing
(...) notifications, similar to WhatsApp, which has a different notification
convention. Apart from the standard Emojis on your device, Hike has its own
set of emoticons for variety.
iOS versus Android

The UI as well as functionality on both platforms is pretty much the same. A
word of caution, Android users will not be able to play .mov files sent by
iPhone users. The company is aware of the scenario and plans to soon
implement a fix soon to convert the video to a universal MP4 file format at
their backend so that it can be played on every device.

Other issues include couple of emoji smileys not

Thank you Sunil/Aruna.
So as per my earlier question, we can do a hard reset by entering code
*2767*3855#.
So is this same as factory reset? or is there any difference?

Thanks and Regards.

this'll delete all the old cach and user settings as wel as data . so
take backup if you have any importent data in your phone.

the phone should work properly after reset. also, make sure that you
 are using the latest talkback.

2013-06-03 Thread Amar Jain
Hi Satguru Bhaiya,

Before even thinking to start with your first iPhone, the basic step
to be taken is to give a big treat! :d

Tips to get started:
1. Learn the tutorial of Voice Over, practice commands there, which
will help you in learning the gestures. Its there in voice over
(settings>general>accessibility), announced as 'practice voice over
button'.
2. Read the apple's help documentation for accessibility, which is
indeed good according to me, as I have done a very little practice
with voice over.
3. There are hell lot of podcasts about IPhone on various sites, and
since you must be up to date with emails, I need not give you website
links.
4. Install Fleksy, one of the amazing typing app on IOS.

Do get back should you have specific questions.

Regards,

Re: [Mobile.AI] starting with my new iPhone?

2013-06-03 Thread john clayton
Hello there.
As a few people have said, you don't need a sim inserted to activate voiceover.
A computer isn't needed,either. if the device hasn't been setuped as I
see it hasn't been from your mail, tripple tap the home button to start
voiceover.
However,to complete the setup,you do need a sim card,which shouldn't
be a big problem. go to any nearby store which sells sim cards and
such, and they ought to be able to cut your sim into a micro sim.
Have fun with your new IPhone, its a pretty good device, and the apps
you can get for it should make your life much easyer. TapTap See,for
one as it is able to recognise indian currency.and if you are into
games and such, there are many that can be found on applevis.
Its a good resource for IOS users,as well.
HTH,

Hi sometimes a number of files belonging to the pre upgrade version may be left
on the memory card. These files may interfere with the smooth working of the
upgraded system. That is why there are so many additional options for deleting
cache and partitions etc in the recovery mode.

Re: [Mobile.AI] Starting with my first iPhone?

2013-06-03 Thread timy sebastian ettumanoor
will pop up a message alerting you that it is
getting low. Plug the iPhone in to recharge. If the iPhone is fully
discharged, after you have plugged in to charge, when it wakes up,
you will hear two quick vibrations as it powers up. The lighting
cable to charge the iPhone is plugged in to the small lightning
connector at the bottom edge of the iPhone in the middle.
16. Triple click: to allow a non VoiceOver user to use your iPhone, you
need to enable Triple click. When this is activated, you can press
the Home button (bottom middle) three times to turn VoiceOver on or
off when ever you need to. This is done by activating Settings,
General, Accessibility, Triple click, and then selecting VoiceOver.
Once on, press the Home button (bottom middle) to return to the Main
Home screen. Remember, you can navigate to all of these items by 1
finger drag or flick left or right to locate each item, and then a 1
finger double tap to select an item. Tip: touching the screen with 4
fingers at the top will jump the voiceOver focus to the top most
item on the screen which in the Setting screens is the Back button
to go back a screen, 1 finger double tap as usual to activate this
if you wish to go back a screen, and of course, 4 finger touch at
the bottom of the screen moves the VoiceOver focus to the last item
   on the screen.
17. Gesture to mute VoiceOver and turn on screen privacy mode (screen
curtain): Three finger tap twice on the screen will turn VoiceOver
speech off or on (this is not the same as Triple click where
VoiceOver is completely turned off), mentioned hear just as a
warning, and avoid if possible. Screen curtain is useful as it
blanks the screen so that no person can see what is on your screen.
To turn this on or off, three finger triple tap: remember, three
finger double tap was the speech off or on gesture.
18. Locking the iPhone: Press the Power button (top right) to lock the
iPhone. The iPhone will automatically lock after 1 minute if the
   screen is not being touched.
19. Adjusting the auto lock from 1 minute: as you might come to
appreciate, having the screen lock every 1 minute particularly when
your learning is a pest. To adjust the time for auto lock: Settings,
   General, Auto-Lock, and then select 1 (default), 2, 3, 4, 5 or
Never. Press the Home button (bottom middle) to return to the main
20. Turning off the iPhone (not recommended): Hold the Power button (top
right) in for two seconds. VoiceOver will announce "Slide to power
off" and "slide or double tap" (second message is the VoiceOver
hint). 1 finger double tap anywhere on the screen to Power off. If
screen not touched for 30 seconds, screen will lock. Otherwise, drag
1 finger up from Home button (bottom middle) to find the Cancel
button, and then 1 finger double tap anywhere on screen to activate
the Cancel button. The Power off control is towards the top of the
screen if you wish to find it by dragging one finger.

Re: [Mobile.AI] issues with samsung galaxy chat b5330 after updating to gellybean 4.1.2

2013-06-03 Thread DINESH THOLE
Hi Sunil/Aruni,

Thank you very much.
With sighted help, I have reset my phone to factory through the
settings menue and it is working great now.
So just for knowledge, is there any difference between resetting the
phone through the settings menue or through the recovery option?
Or is it just that recovery mode could be used when we are unable to
boot in to the phone or if it is unusable.
Also there is hard reset which can be done by keying in some code, so
is there any difference between all these options?

Thanks and Regards.

Re: [Mobile.AI] Starting with my first iPhone?

2013-06-03 Thread Surajsingh Jogi Nerul East Branch

Hi,
You have to get a micro simm first. When you insert the simm, you will get a
setup dialogue box, which you can do with the help of a sighted person.
Also, there is another way. For that, you need to connect your i phone to
the computer, which has I tunes installed and then a visually challenged
person can activate voice over without anybody's help.

This is what I know. I am also a new user.

Hi Satguru, iPhone requires microcim. However, I am told that any sim
can be cut into a microsim, no big issues there. As far as accessibility
is concerned, you can turn on voiceOver even without having a sim
inserted.

2013-06-03 Thread Aruni Sharma
Hello Satguru, you have to go to
settings/general/accessibility/voiceOver and turn on the same. But can't
you complete the initial set up without a sim? maybe someone who is
using an iPhone can better help. I was assuming it should not take a sim
to get it going. try completing the set up and do as above.

[Mobile.AI] A question on Tablets

2013-06-03 Thread Mahesh S. Panicker
Hello listers
I am here with a general question on Tqablets. As of now I am using a
laptop as my primary machine, and an HCL netbook with windows 7 at
work, as its easier to carry around. I would like to know whether
Tablets are even easier to handle in a work and travel environment.
Can we use it to access the internet, read PDF documents, and read and
create word documents? How accessible is the android platform on tabs
with regard to accessibility? What kind of keyboard can we use on
these devices? Do all tabs run on either Android or Windows 8?
Too many questions, but the crux of it is, is it really possible for
me to give up on my netbook and go for a tab?
Would greatly appreciate your responses.

Regards,
