[Mobile.AI] Fwd: [DFI] EasyAccess For Androiid launched on the Google Play Store.
Dear Friends, The National Association for the Blind – Delhi with support of Extentia Pune, Ideal Group and Friends from Google Germany are proud to announce the launch of EasyAccess for Android which is a launcher designed for those visually challenged individuals who wish to switch over to the Android platform. The EasyAccess for Android has been specially designed keeping in view the needs of a new entrant to the world of Android. On installation of the new launcher it presents the user with a selection of 18 different folders. These 18 folders are spread over 3 home pages. Each folder contains apps for that particular section. E.g. the folder E-mail will have all the apps which can open E-mail accounts on your phone. If a particular app is not installed already on your phone, than EasyAccess for Android will directly open the link for downloading the particular app on the Google Play Store. This makes the EasyAccess for Android a 1 stop Solution for all beginers who wish to unleash the power of Android, but were scared of the touch interface. The EasyAccess for Android can be directly downloaded from the following link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.easyaccess "EasyAccess for Android" is a new Android "shell" representing a new operating mode embedded in the Android DNA. [Mobile.AI] AppleVis Newsletter] AppleVis Unlimited: What's New in Accessible Apps for June 2015
ring. This year was no exception: >iOS9, OS X 10.11, watchOS 2.0, an updated Apple Pay, and the all-new Apple >Music were all shown off with Apples usual flare. Once you've seen the presentation, be >sure to check out this musical summary of the announcements! > >iOS/OS X: Bugs, Brains, and Battery > Most of you will recall that last year's release of iOS8 wasn't exactly >smooth. There were a lot of bugs throughout the OS, from VoiceOver, to wifi, >and beyond. Patches came out, but failed to fix many of the issues. There >was even that one time Apple accidentally disabled cellular calling on many >iPhones with a bad update! The whole iOS8 experience left a sour taste in >peoples' mouths. My Apple Watch Diary: To Speak on Wrist Raise or Not By David Goodwin | June 5, 2015 >When I first saw mention of the Apple Watch having a ‘Speak On Wrist >Raise’ option for VoiceOver users, my immediate reaction was that this >would be one of those ‘set it and forget it’ settings. However, this is >not turning out to be the case. > >For those of you who don’t have an Apple Watch and are unfamiliar with >this option and what it does, it simply has VoiceOver automatically speak >the Watch screen when you lift your wrist (which most commonly results in >the time being announced). Essentially, it takes things one step further >than the ‘Activate On Wrist Raise’ option found elsewhere in the Watch >settings, which controls whether the Watch display wakes when you lift your >wrist. Actually, it’s supposed to be smarter than that might suggest, in >that it should recognize and require the combination of both the lifting and >the turning movements typically indicative of somebody looking at their >watch. > Read full post: "My Apple Watch Diary: To Speak on Wrist Raise or Not" http://www.applevis.com/blog/advocacy-apple-apple-watch-opinion/my-apple-watch-diary-speak-wrist-raise-or-not .. My Apple Watch Diary: Straps and Watch Orientation By David Goodwin | June 4, 2015 >Watch, you might be excused for wondering at this point what else I have >left to say on the topic … or, at least anything left to say that’s >based upon personal experience. Before its release, I gave my reasons for >not buying one. However, I was back within a few weeks to report that my >inner-geek and it’s curiosity had ultimately won out, and that I had ended >up buying an Apple Watch Sport, only to then return it. > >The decision to return the Watch felt right for me at that time (see my >previous post mentioned above for the reasons). However, it was suggested >that I had not given the Watch enough time to prove itself to me and find a >place in my daily routine. It was argued that the nature of the Apple Watch >means that it takes time and some experimentation to truly determine how it >can best work for you and complement the use and experience of your iPhone. > >So, here I am again. Back this time with a stainless steel Apple Watch and a >couple of bands (a Milanese Loop and a Leather Loop). > >Armed with my previous experience and some insights into that of others, I >intend to approach things a little differently this time around. I want to >come to the Watch with more realistic expectations of what it can do. I am >also going to try to be a little more patient and understanding about the >things that it cannot do … or at least the things which it cannot >currently do very well. I am sure that Apple might argue that some of these >are actually things which the Watch was never intended to do. After all, >it’s an accessory to an iPhone, not a replacement for one. Not only do I >personally need to recognize this distinction, but it’s something that I >am hoping more third-party developers will come to terms with as their Watch >apps mature and evolve over time. > Read full post: "My Apple Watch Diary: Straps and Watch Orientation" http://www.applevis.com/blog/apple-apple-watch-opinion/my-apple-watch-diary-straps-and-watch-orientation This Month in Podcasts .. which you can turn on and off from inside the URL window, the space where you would type a search query or URL. To the left hand side of the URL window, you will see a small square made up of four short horizontal lines. If you touch this square, the web page you are viewing will be reformatted into a simple plain text version without any images or graphics. It will also be displayed in your preferred font size as per your Larger Type setting. Please note this feature only works on pages which support Safari Reader. There is also a free app available from the App Store called Big Browser. This alternative web browser allows you to view any web page with larger buttons and clearer contrast. [Mobile.AI] Fw: Review of the TuneIn Radio iPad app using a screen reader
app is slightly easier to use, it does not offer the variety of radio stations as TuneIn Radio. Given the very minor accessibility issues, I would definitely recommend this to other blind people as it has so much to offer, and seeing as it is a free app, there is no harm in trying it out. Any other comments In order to improve the user experience I would really like to see the layout of the app to be similar to other apps, with the tabs across the bottom of the screen as appose to the left-hand side. This would simplify the app and make it easier for VoiceOver users to follow. Also, it would be useful if the inconsistency in the labelling of buttons was resolved, both on the ‘now playing’ section and the areas where buttons are not labelled correctly. Conclusion The TuneIn radio app for iOS enables the user to listen to a variety of radio stations. While the app is mostly accessible, a few issues with the labelling of buttons and the layout of the sign up screen are problematic for the app. In order to improve the user experience, it is recommended that the layout of the app be changed so that the tabs are across the bottom of the screen and that all buttons are labelled correctly. [Mobile.AI] Fw: Review of SoundCloud for the iPad using a Screen Reader
that I’ve used, the different tabs or pages of the App are shown horizontally across the bottom of the screen. However in this case they were displayed vertically on the left hand side of the screen, which did throw me a little bit. However, generally this is a really good App and I am extremely pleased the developers of the App have made this App mostly accessible for VoiceOver users. As this is a free App to download, I would definitely recommend other VoiceOver users to download the App and see if it works for them as well as it worked for me. Audioboo is another App that enables users to share audio content, but unlike SoundCloud, you cannot share music videos by other users or clips posted by your followers. Any other comments In order to make the user experience more efficient, I would recommend that the developers make sure that their button labelling is consistent and if possible, they should try and change the layout to mirror other Apps currently on the market. Conclusion The SoundCloud App enables a user to share their favourite music and audio clips with their followers and they are also able to follow other users who share content that interests them. It is free to download from the App store and it is mostly accessible. Despite the inconsistency in button labelling, the App is extremely easy to use and follow. As a blind user, I would like to see all buttons labelled correctly, which would make my user experience more efficient and I'm positive that new VoiceOver users would really benefit from this change as well. Re: [Mobile.AI] Nook - App of the Month for October 2013
Nook - App of the Month for October 2013mob From: Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) Sent: Tuesday, October 01, 2013 5:02 AM To: tahahaa...@gmail.com Subject: Nook - App of the Month for October 2013 Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page. You are subscribed to TechKnowMore blog for Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). Nook - App of the Month for October 2013 30-09-2013 01:00 PM BST Body: Nook is an eBook reader made by Barnes & Noble. In addition to physical eReaders, they also make apps that allow you to read your content on other devices such as smartphones. This month we reviewed their Android app. Where to get it Download Nook from the Google Play Store User comments We heard from Steve Nutt... The Nook app for Android is a real milestone in accessibility to books for the blind and visually impaired. The first time you run the app, it will present a screen asking you to either log into your Nook account, or create one. A Nook account is free, so if you don't have one, create a new account. If you do, sign in. Once you have signed in, if you have an existing account, all your books will be displayed from your Nook library in the cloud. To download a book, simply double tap it and the book will then be downloaded and opened. If you have created an account for the first time, some free books and some samples of books you can buy will be in your library. The samples are periodically updated. You can open any of these freebies or sample books in the same way. Also on this library screen, you can filter the books by only books on the device, books in the cloud or all books. You can also sort by Author, Recently Read, etc. Assuming you have a book open, you can do one of two things. You can either explore the screen with your finger, at which point you will get a line of text read to you as you touch it. If you use this method, you can use Talkback gestures to find out spellings of words, etc. The second alternative however is to tap a checkbox near the top lefthand corner of the screen, which says "Reading Unchecked". However, if you tick this box, automatic reading will start and continue until you stop it. Stopping auto reading is simply done by touching the screen. If auto reading is stopped, you can flick to previous or next page with a two finger left / right gesture. Left for next, right for previous page. Next to the Reading check box is a bookmarks checkbox, which again is unchecked. Check this and you can move to bookmarks or add them. If you tap the More Options button near the top right, you will reach settings, contents, etc. All of these things are accessible, including moving to any chapter in the contents, any page number, etc. You can also adjust font size, though I don't know the effect of this as I am totally blind. I tend to set the font to the smallest size, as I get the most on a page. Finally, you can also side load books. That is to say if you have your own books in .epub format, even if they were not purchased from Nook, you can load them onto your phone and read them in the Nook app. When you close the app, your position will be remembered. If you sync your library before you close the app, your position will be remembered across more than one device which is great for me, as I have an Android phone and tablet. In conclusion then, I cannot fault this app at all. It is completely accessible and I congratulate Barnes & Noble for doing a fine job. I only hope that Amazon will learn from it when it comes to the Kindle app, which presently is inaccessible on Android. Got a suggestion? We want to hear from you, our users. [Mobile.AI] Fw: Accessible Android - Website of the month September 2013
Accessible Android - Website of the month September 2013 From: Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) Sent: Tuesday, September 03, 2013 5:01 AM To: tahahaa...@gmail.com Subject: Accessible Android - Website of the month September 2013 Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page. You are subscribed to TechKnowMore blog for Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). Accessible Android - Website of the month September 2013 02-09-2013 10:25 AM BST Body: Android accessibility has improved hugely over the last two years, and while most people would agree it's not yet at the stage that Apple has reached with their iOS software for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, it's catching up fast. One of the good things about Apple accessibility is the way that blind people have taken to it and created a lot of support materials for new users in the way of audio clips and documentation. A prime example of this is the AppleVis website, run by and for visually impaired Apple users. Android resources have been thin on the ground by comparison. Which is why it's so refreshing to hear about the Accessible Android website. The website is a blog by Ana G, an Android user since 2010. She's blind, and uses the TalkBack screen reader that now comes as part of Android. The website contains a history of Android accessibility and a growing list of links to other blogs, Google's official information, cool apps and the That Android Show podcast. Ana also has links to Android discussion lists. The website has only been going since July. It's a revamp of an earlier blog that ran for most of 2011 and is still available, but quite out of date. I'm sure the new site will proof invaluable to both new and experienced users who are interested in Android accessibility. But no one woman can do this all on her own, and I really hope others join in and help create a rich variety of resources to help spread the word. Got a suggestion? We want to hear from you, our users. Which apps and websites should we be writing about on the TechKnowMore blog? Is there an app you can no longer live without? What website is at the top of your favourites list? Drop us an email on digitalacc...@rnib.org.uk to let us know, and your favourite service could be featured in the very near future! View it as a Web page. You are subscribed to TechKnowMore blog for Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). BlackBerry 10 - Features for Partially Sighted Users 21-08-2013 05:30 PM BST Body: The recent release of the BlackBerry 10 operating system (BB 10) has for the first time seen the inclusion of a full screen magnifier that is part of the device "out of the box" with no separate download or installation required. This is a big step forward for BlackBerry accessibility compared to older handsets. There are currently three devices on the high street that support the new magnification feature. These are the Z10 which is a full touch screen device and the Q10 and Q5 which are split touch screen / QWERTY devices (the top half of the handset is a touch screen and the bottom half is a full QWERTY tactile keyboard). Where to find the magnification settings On BB 10, you can quickly access the accessibility features by sliding one finger down from the top edge of the touch screen when you are on the home screen. Then select "Settings > Accessibility" from the menu. In the Accessibility menu, make sure that "Magnify Mode" is set to on. Unfortunately, you can't use the magnifier during the setup process yet but hopefully this will be addressed in a future update. Controlling the magnifier To zoom in and out of the screen you need to use a pinch gesture. The pinch gesture involves using two fingers on the touch screen. To zoom in you use a "pinch in" gesture. To do this, place two fingers on the screen and then move them apart. To zoom out you use a "pinch out" gesture. To do this, place two fingers on the screen and bring them closer together. The magnification is full screen, so when you are zoomed in you can use two fingers on the screen to pan around and view content. Font size setting BlackBerry devices have long had the option to increase the font size used in menus and messages and BB 10 is no different. In BB 10, this feature has been improved to increase the font size in compatible apps as well. To get to the font size setting, slide one finger down from the top edge of the touch screen when you are on the home screen. Then select "Settings > Display" from the menu. You will then see a drop-down menu for "Font Size" that allows you to select your preferred size. Need more help? BlackBerry have instructions for accessibility features on their website. They also have a short video tutorial for accessibility features available on YouTube. Category: Technology news Published: 22/08/2013 11:00 Questions? [Mobile.AI] Fw: Review of the iTunes app for iOS
Review of the iTunes app for iOS From: Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) Sent: Friday, August 09, 2013 5:02 AM To: tahahaa...@gmail.com Subject: Review of the iTunes app for iOS Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page. You are subscribed to TechKnowMore blog for Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). Review of the iTunes app for iOS 08-08-2013 12:22 PM BST Body: 8 August 2013 This app was tested on 17 July 2013 on an iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1.4 and on an iPad 2 running iOS 6.0.1. I could not find a specific app version, but it was up-to-date at the time of testing. Background I am in my early twenties and I have no light perception, so listening to synthetic speech and reading Braille is what enables me to access information around me. I regularly enjoy downloading the latest media onto my iPhone and iPad, this includes items such as music, films and renting TV programmes. However, as an Apple user, I need to be connected to iTunes to access this feature. As iTunes is now available on my device, I can download the items that I want right there and then (providing I have an internet connection). I access my iOS device with VoiceOver (the inbuilt screen reader that comes with all iOS devices). I am confident with using VoiceOver to navigate my device and am able to learn my way quickly around apps and identify accessibility issues if they are present. Information about the app The iTunes app comes installed on all iOS devices, the app cannot be deleted so there is no chance of losing it. The iTunes app enables the user to: a.. Browse content such as Music, audio books, films and TV programmes b.. Access content that they have downloaded already (including content on other devices) c.. Purchase new content using their apple account. Setting up the app In order to access purchased content and download new content, the user has to be signed into their iTunes account. This can be done by going to settings > iTunes and App Stores. Using the app Once I had set up the app, I performed the following tasks: a.. Browsed the content available such as films, audio books, TV programmes and music b.. Viewed my downloaded content c.. Purchased new content and downloaded it onto my device. I found all the tasks accessible with VoiceOver. I encountered no accessibility issues when using iTunes with VoiceOver. Advantages and disadvantages Advantages: a.. Accessible to use as it is b.. There is a range of content available. Disadvantages: a.. There is no audio described films or TV programmes available to download Overall, the iTunes app is really accessible. I would definitely recommend it to other VoiceOver Users to try. Currently, to my knowledge there is no other app that enables the user to download items directly onto their iOS device. Any other comments In order to improve the user experience it is recommended that Apple include audio described content. Conclusion The iTunes app for iOS enables the user to download and access previously purchased content. The app is accessible with VoiceOver. The only aspect that let the app down was the absence of audio described content in the films and TV programmes sections. Nevertheless, I would definitely recommend this app to other blind users as there are no obvious issues when it comes to accessibility. Accessible Games 01-08-2013 11:01 AM BST Body: Each month we feature different apps that make different services more accessible to people with sight loss. We were recently contacted by somebody asking about games on the computer, tablets and mobile phones that are suitable for blind people. So here you go, here are a few different games that are available and accessible to people with sight loss. Soccer manager for the PC Soccer manager is an online football manager game played through your web browser; it is based on real teams and real players and gets its information from real life databases. It also updates all clubs regularly so you can always have the latest players available. The game is free to play although you can buy extras such as the ability to create your own clubs and play against people across the world. Soccer manager is quite accessible and you can do most things without any issues. Audio Archery for Android and iOS You can download Audio Archery for free from the iTunes App Store You can download Audio Archery for free from the Google Play Store Audio archery brings archery to IOS. Use only your ears and your reflexes to shoot targets. The game is entirely auditory, so there are no pictures or icons. You will hear a target move from left to right. When it is centered, flick down on the screen with one finger to pull back your bow. Release your finger to fire your arrow. The game consists of 10 rounds with 7 shots each. Your goal is to meet or exceed the minimum score given to pass to the next round. Can you pass the tenth round and become the audio archery champion? Hangman for iOS You can download Hangman for free from the iTunes App Store Hangman is based on the popular word guessing game by the same name. The player guesses letters in order to uncover the hidden word. But be careful, you only have a few guesses before you're hanged! Unlike other versions of Hangman, this one gives the player a few more guesses by building up the gallows as the player guesses, instead of having them pre-built. The two player mode allows you and a friend to play together. One person enters a word and the other tries to guess it. The Night Jar for iOS You can download The Night Jar for £2.99 from the iTunes App Store The Night Jar is an audio only adventure game that has was nominated for two BAFTA game awards in 2012. The storyline is you have been stranded on a broken spacecraft, spiralling towards a black hole. The aim is to get out of trouble! The Night Jar uses 3D audio technology, with the use of headphones you will be able to hear where things are coming from. The game costs £2.99 and is available from the Apple App Store. You will need a pair of headphones and a minimum of an iPhone 3GS or first generation iPad. Papa Sangre for iOS You can download The Night Jar for £2.99 from the iTunes App Store Papa Sangre is possibly the best known game to blind iOS users. Cited with many awards since it was launched this game with no video utilises the same 3D audio technology used in The Night Jar. The game sees you trapped in Papa Sangre's palace in the afterlife. Your task: save the soul of someone you love. The design of the game is very intuitive to use and navigate. There are lots of different puzzles and dilemmas to solve. The game costs £2.99 from the iOS app store and will run on any iPad or iPhone 3GS or newer. You will also need a pair of headphones to play the game. BBC Weather - App of the Month August 2013 From: Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) Sent: Friday, August 02, 2013 5:02 AM To: tahahaa...@gmail.com Subject: BBC Weather - App of the Month August 2013 Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page. You are subscribed to TechKnowMore blog for Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). BBC Weather - App of the Month August 2013 01-08-2013 09:48 AM BST Body: The BBC weather app is a recent addition to the app market. With the current flourish of nice weather the app is a nice addition to your Smartphone. Information about the weather type, temperature, five day forecast is neatly displayed and easy to navigate allowing you to decide if you need your suntan lotion or umbrella. Where to get it Download the BBC Weather app from the iTunes App Store for Free - Download the BBC Weather app from the Google Play Store for Free - What’s so great about the BBC Weather app? The BBC Weather app is very intuitive to use. All of the information you need is organised in a way that is both pleasing to the eye and also easily navigated with both VoiceOver and Talkback. You are able to store a number of different locations and quickly switch between them in order to find out what the weather is like almost anywhere in the world. The app allows you to customise the information it reads including the temperature in either degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit and wind speed in either MPH or KMH. User Comments Emma, an iOS user has recently started using the BBC Weather App “When the BBC Weather app was released recently, it went straight to the top of the charts. This was partly because the iPhone's native weather app, which takes its information from Yahoo, is pretty inaccurate - when time allowed, I always went to the BBC Weather website for a second opinion. But it happened too because the BBC Weather app is excellent in its own right and it is fully accessible for Voiceover users”. “In the iPhone's native app, you have to add your location and information is only accurate to city. Internet connection permitting, the BBC Weather app figures out where you are and automatically serves up the forecast for that area. You can then add any other places in the UK or the world that you want to keep tabs on. It gives you wind speed, the pollen count and whether the day will be generally sunny or rain-soaked. And, like in the native app, you can unfold an hourly forecast”. Android user Dee has also recently swapped to the BBC Weather App. “As an Android user, who loves to check the weather for an instant ‘what should I wear today’ report, I have always found the installed AccuWeather app to be most accurate and completely user friendly in comparison to other weather apps”. “The innovative BBC Weather App is appealing on first impression because of its key content and climate conditions, simultaneously located on just one page. Again, well sited and accessible, using clear, large fonts, makes this trouble-free site easy to navigate”. “Alongside the Android app, its accuracy, seems once again very precise and can be updated in seconds. Unlike Accuweather, the BBC app has the facility to search by post code, district or current position and save such a location. Given that it is a somewhat new app, it may just have the edge over the Android app, due to its ‘search and save any location’ feature and the ease of having all the info on one page”. Re: [Mobile.AI] Review of the Rdio app for the iPad
ed so that a VoiceOver user can move their finger around the screen without getting confused by the presence of other tabs covering the screen. It would be easier if the tabs were across the bottom. Conclusion The Rdio app for iOS enables the user to listen to their favourite music and create their own playlists so that they can sync it with other devices if they wish. The app is mostly accessible, with the main issue concerning the labelling of buttons and the layout of the app. Nevertheless, it is easy to work around these issues, thereby making it a really good app for VoiceOver users. However, some VoiceOver users may prefer to use SoundCloud as VoiceOver gives more feedback as to what information is being displayed on the screen. Nevertheless if the developers of the Rdio app resolve the issue of unlabelled buttons, then this app would prove healthy competition for SoundCloud, especially in the way of accessibility. [Mobile.AI] Fw: Review of the Spotify app on the iPad
yback fairly easily c.. easy to access and edit playlists as appropriate. Disadvantages a.. Display of search results is very confusing for a VoiceOver user b.. While the actual tabs are labelled as buttons, the items inside them are not labelled as buttons c.. the registration process does not give clear instructions on screen. Due to the accessibility issues with the app, it is not the easiest for a new VoiceOver user to use. It requires a lot of patience and learning your way around the app and finding what button does what and memorising it. To my knowledge there isn't a similar product on the market currently, but people are still able to share their favourite music on social networking websites from YouTube. I would not recommend this app to VoiceOver users who are looking for a smooth user experience when listening to music. Additionally, given the fact that users have to pay for the service, it is unreasonable to provide them with an app that only has part of the accessibility built in. Any other comments In order to improve the user experience, it is recommended that all buttons are labelled correctly and appropriately. This would then make the price of the service fair to all users. Conclusion The Spotify app enables users to listen to music, share what they are listening to and view what their friend's favourite music is. Due to the amount of unlabelled buttons and the difficulty in accessing the search results, this app is very difficult for new VoiceOver users to use. However, for those who are confident with the gesture based screen reader, this app is usable if they are willing to tolerate the highlighted issues. Finally, as the service is a paid for service, it is vital to improve the accessibility of the product in order to make the subscription fee fair to all users. However, the app really falls behind in terms of accessibility in areas such as button labelling, the labelling of items and the fact that the app kept crashing at unexpected moments and had to be restarted. [Mobile.AI] Fw: Review of the BBC iPlayer for the iPhone and the iPad
t differences that I found between the iPhone and iPad version. Firstly, the layout of the programme information screen on the iPad was really confusing for a VoiceOver user. Visually, the screen is split into 2 halves, with the programme list on the left hand side and the information of the programme on the right hand side. However, this was not distinguishable with VoiceOver. Consequently, while I was trying to read the details of a specific programme, VoiceOver was announcing other programme names as I was flicking through the screen. The favourites tab was really difficult to access. For some reason VoiceOver would not read out the list of my favourite programmes. In order to know what they were, I had to double tap the item. The final difference was that the iPad version has a TV guide. This is displayed in a grid form with buttons for each day at the top (Sunday-Saturday of current week) and the programmes listed in time order for the selected day. Programmes are displayed on multiple pages for one day, however, it is not immediately obvious to a VoiceOver user. I learned this when I swiped with three fingers and realised that I was on page three of five. On the left-hand side there is a list of channels, but VoiceOver does not acknowledge the presence of anything on the screen and simply makes a clicking noise to indicate that the area of the screen is blank. Advantages and disadvantages Advantages a.. Gives the user access to a TV schedule and to download and watch their favourite programmes with no sighted support b.. Attempts have been made at making it as accessible as possible. Disadvantages a.. No audio described programmes b.. It is not possible to access all programme information c.. It is not possible to forward/rewind a programme while watching it without sighted support. Overall, this app is good for a VoiceOver user. However, the absence of audio described content and the fact that small pieces of information are missing for programme details really lets the app down. When it is compared to other catch-up apps such as 4oD and ITV player, this app is ahead in the way of accessibility as it has a simple layout which is easy to follow. I would recommend this app to other VoiceOver users because it really demonstrates how accessible an app could potentially be. Any other comments In order to improve the usability of this app for VoiceOver users, it is recommended that audio described content is included and that the information regarding programmes is set out in a clear and accessible way. Conclusion The BBC iPlayer app for iPhone and iPad enables the user to catch-up on the last 7 days of TV and Radio programmes that have been broadcast. When issues of accessibility are considered, the absence of audio description and the fact that it is not possible to access all the information of a programme or use all the playback controls with VoiceOver really let the app down. In the iPad version, the layout of the information hinders a VoiceOver user's chances of successfully accessing the programme information, the absence of item labelling in the favourites section and the absence of channel names in the TV guide are a huge barrier for those using this specific app version. Despite these issues, the app is ahead of other catch-up TV apps in the way of accessibility and it is for this reason that I would recommend other VoiceOver users to give the app a go. Yell - App of the Month July 2013 From: Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) Sent: Wednesday, July 03, 2013 5:01 AM To: tahahaa...@gmail.com Subject: Yell - App of the Month July 2013 Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page. You are subscribed to TechKnowMore blog for Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). Yell - App of the Month July 2013 02-07-2013 11:26 AM BST Body: Don’t you hate not being able to find that telephone number for the takeaway, taxi firm or other local business? I know it’s a huge frustration in my house! Did you know you can get the infamous Yellow Pages on your Smartphone? Yell is an incredibly powerful app for your Smartphone that allows you to search for all kinds of services both locally and nationally, and its free! Where to get it Download Yell from the iTunes App Store for Free Download Yell from the Google Play Store for Free What is so great about Yell? Yell allows you to search for businesses that are listed on the Yellow Pages website. You can search broadly by your local area or change it to another area of the country. Once you have found the business you are looking for you have the option of adding them to your contacts. If you regularly search for similar types of businesses you can save the search to a single button on the apps home screen. User Comment Kara, who is blind and an iPhone user told us about Yell Yell is an app that gives you access to the yellow pages directory of businesses found at www.yell.com, without having to go through the web site. It has a simple, easy to use interface and a lot of handy features, such as an iOS style home screen containing a number of predefined searches. You can easily add your own, however at the time of writing, it's impossible to remove them with VoiceOver. This is not a deal breaker though. If you'd rather type in what you're searching for, there's a search box at the top of the screen. It also gives you the choice of searching using your current location or by entering it manually. The businesses are displayed in a list showing the name, address, phone number and the distance from either your current location or the one you set, along with a button to add the listing to your contacts. Double tapping the number will call it directly, while double tapping the business name will give you more information if provided. This could include a description and opening times. There is also the ability to read reviews left by other customers and to write your own if desired. As you can see, this app gives you a lot more information than, say, using 195 or other directory enquiries services. Also, if you're like me in that you immediately forget the number you got from 195 as soon as you put the phone down, you'll find this app a worthwhile addition to your arsenal of essential tools. Or you can also press the 'end' button which is towards the bottom end of the screen. Sent from my iPhone On Apr 23, 2013, at 10:21 AM, "taha haaziq " wrote: to add some more, 1. [Mobile.AI] Navigon - App of the Month February 2013 by RNIB
Navigon - App of the Month February 2013 31-01-2013 03:36 PM GMT Body: The App of the Month for February is Navigon. A Personal Global Positioning System (GPS) designed for users however they travel, be it on foot, cycle or car. Where to get it Download Navigon from the iTunes App Store for £24.99 Download Navigon from the Google Play Store for £29.95 What is Navigon? Navigon lets you turn your smart phone into a fully functional mobile navigation system. Navigon gives you clear turn by turn instructions and works very well with Voiceover. Navigon is simple to use and its appearance is very user friendly. Besides telling you which way to go Navigon allows you to: Find out where you are at any time Plan routes Direct you to nearby points of interest such as restaurants and cash machines Use Google Local Search if you have an internet connection View the on screen maps in both 2D and 3D User Comment Ibrahim Gucukoglu is blind and has been using Navigon on his iPhone. I use a product called Navigon which works on my IPhone 5 and allows me to navigate from any destination I choose to either an address or one of millions of points of interest in its database. Using the product is very straight forward. Once the app is started for the first time, the necessary maps are downloaded meaning that the phone does not have to be connected to the internet during navigation. Two high quality text to speech engines – based on the nuance voices provide concise turn by turn instructions including announcement of road names, and a map display shows a visual representation of the route in either a 2D flat display or optionally a 3-D view to aid in orientation. It is possible to have the voice instructions repeated at any time and the app will reroute you if you make a mistake, this can save you considerable backtracking and in my opinion is essential when working a new route. The app has many optional features which can be purchased within the app itself, these include regular map updates, traffic updates for drivers and public transport information, so one can plan routes in major cities using the public transport infrastructure. In summary, Navigon provides the essential elements of a navigation aid. It provides clear, concise turn by turn navigation instructions, the ability to plan routes using public transport, multiple mapping options and the ability to review the spoken instructions as well as a complete list of turn by turn instructions for the route if desired. Where Navigon falls down however is its lacklustre points of interest database sources and the limited information it is able to provide on your surroundings, meaning that additional apps need to be downloaded and or purchased in order to make your phone a powerful navigational aid. with best regards taha haaziq Master Trainer for DAISY Digital Talking Book Production talking book studio/library in charge of Technical Training Institute of PBMA E-mail: tahahaa...@gmail.com Mobile: +91 9970620111 Office: +91 20 26870986 +91 20 26870609 skype: taha.haaziq Address: vivek apartments, block A3, flat 36, opposite don's garage, ramtekri,Hadapsar, Pune 411013.
