 I like Frank Black myself.

I'm obsessed with the Pixes myself.

modest mouse = built to spill + pixies.

so the last 4 messages actually make a lot of sense.

 i love built to spill!

I have no trouble starting this war: Keep it like a secret is good.
BUT when listened to in respect of Perfect from now on, it is crap.

i actualy like "there's nothing wrong wit love" better than either.
i think they write masterpieces song by song, not album by album.

[MMouse]: Built To Wot?

1999-05-31 Thread Knayte

Slap my vote down on "Perfect From Now On" as easily their best, followed by
"The Normal Years" for wonderful if not too-easily pleasing infectous.

I don't even like "Keep It Like A Secret" very much, and i don't think i've
even been able to listen to the whole thing at once.

[MMouse]: Ultimate Alternative Wavers Rules!

1999-05-31 Thread jsayre

On the subject of BTS:
I've always thought "theres nothing wrong with love" was a move in a
bad direction for them. It was, for the most part, musically dull, and
lyrically challenged. I liked it and all, but only for a short time.
When I got my hands on "Perfect from now on", I dug it for quite a
while, but neither have had the staying power possessed by "Ultimate
Alternative Wavers". I love every song (even "built too long"!). We
listen to it several times a week at my workplace while the others sit
on the shelf. (Well, perfect from now on does get played occasionally).

I think "keep it like a secret" is another "theres nothing wrong with
love", musically anyway (good lyrics). The melodies, and vocal harmonies
are just toohappy! Most of these songs lack the other emotions that
we know BTS are indeed capable of conveying (I do think "bad light", and
"time trap" are super swell). It's like Doug scraped his trusty chord
chart went back to basics.
Well, I guess I can see some kind of pattern forming, so I should like
the next one, right?

Actually, I'm just bitter because the fuckers are skippin' Detroit again.

1999-05-31 Thread X350125GO

awhile ago i read an article on MM, i guess it was not too long after 'long
drive' came out, and they started getting press... i guess being that MM have
sort of a unique sound, the press was trying to peg them and compare their
sound, etc.
...anyways, isaac mentioned he really dug the talking heads, and the pixies.
and its true, in the late 70s/80s there was the talking heads, then in the
late 80s/early 90s there was the pixies. and now we've got modest mouse.
yeah, all three are completey unique bands, but the thread is there.
so basically if you like MM, youd probably like the pixies. and if you like
both MM and the pixies, chances are youll dig the talking heads, especially
their earlier stuff/especially "MORE SONGS ABOUT BUILDINGS AND FOOD". i dont
know, there really arent any hits on this album, ya know, all the talking
heads songs everyone knows, buts its my favorite.
but yeah, everyone should buy that album, if you can find it, get it used on
vinyl, cos it has one of the best covers ever, its a million(exaggeration)
polaroids of the band members peiced together.
well, thats my vote for "essential listening for MM fans".
