[MMouse]: SKG EWS

1999-07-19 Thread Philip Smoker

I thought SKG was the FORMER label of Spiel, Katzen and Geffenberg. And
aren't those the three gentlemen who run DreamWorks now, which was created
with their own principle instead of relying on Big Five money, which is how
SKG originated (and what might have contributed to its downfall, in my
opinion)? SKG put out Vanilla Ice and Wilson Phillips, if I'm not mistaken.

New topic for discussion: Eyes Wide Shut
Who saw it? What did you think? Did you like it? What is the theme?

I have my little speech for whoever is curious...

[MMouse]: hardcore kids and elmo rok

1999-07-19 Thread wm. a. richards

first off, i agree with the person who suggested removing 'emo' from our
music vocabularies...but we still need a term with which to pigeonhole the
music, otherwise we'll suffer from wicked gestalt voodoo--SO, i suggest we
call it 'elmo rok' from now on. any other ideas?

***somebody wrote:***
emo is "indie" rock that "hard core" kids will say they listen
to..openly.

i know a lot of hardcore bands i've heard way too many hardcore
recordings..the phrase "fucking emo dick-lickers" has come up on more than
one occassion both in discussions i've overheard and in live gigs and on
record, so it's good to know that in the hardcore scene there are some other
opinions about elmo rok.

the label 'emo' is a little broad though--while hardcore kids might dig Boy
Sets Fire they're not likely to get hateful listening to Mineral or
Karate

How can we get away with claling this a Modest Mouse list, i wonder..

[MMouse]: eyes wide shut. grrr

1999-07-19 Thread Magicbeetl

yeah...i saw eyes wide shut last friday...and i personally thought it was a
terrible mistake. it bored me, it annoyed me, and it dissappointed me in a
really big way. what the hell happened? i guess thats what you get when you
try to cast tom cruise and nicole kidman. pee wee herman's little spot as
the hotel desk clerk did cheer me up a bit, however...and the lighting was
amazing, if you wanna get into the technical stuff. as for the theme...hmm,
sex? fantasy? jealousy? god, i dont know...but it certainly did not live up
to my expectations of stanley kubrick. good luck not falling asleep if you
decide to see it anyway...

id like to hear what anyone else thought...

well i haven't seen the movie myself yet but i've been reading reviews
about the film and it seems to be getting worse and worse. i guess
basically the film is living in the past and focusing on issues that were
in their prime 20 years ago but don't hold up in discussions or on screen
anymore. no less i'd like to see it and judge for myself if and when
possible so i can make my own decisions on the film but that's mostly what
i've heard.
anyway, go peewee :P
