Yeah? Well I'm gonna kick the ASS of ANYONE who lives within
300 miles of Boston and DOESN'T go see Les Savy Fav at The Middle
East on October 1st. This is the band that SHOULD be getting
the hype that AT THE DRIVE-IN is getting.

i guess i'm getting me ass kicked. i dont plan on seeing either of those
bands. but i figured i'd let everyone know !!! will be playing
in Boston on Mon. Nov 13 (@ the Middle
East w/90 Day Men and Oxes) and Providence on Tues.
Nov 14 (@ either Fort Thunder or someplace on RSDI
w/90 Day Men, Oxes, and hopefully Lightning Bolt).

theyre the best live band in the world so you may as well go.

and modest mouse were way better in providence than philly. and i cant
figure
out why they dont finish gods shoeshine.

 Just an observation...
For those of you kids who dig Les Savy Fav - you really should check out
Hot Hot Heat, especially the song "Circus Maximus." They also have
keyboards that take some getting used to, but once you do, OOOHHH baby!
I have a bunch on Napster (I'm Mapledaisy), including their flip-side
singles with Red Light Sting, but I'm happiest with Circus Maximus.

 I also found a cool web site called Fairtunes.com. It's a "virtual
tip-jar" for artists. Therefore, if you download quite a few songs from a
band that you like and respect, but have no further motive for actually
purchasing any other their "printed" work, you can go to fairtunes.com and
enter your credit card (just hear me out here!) and they send monthly
checks to the artists. You can enter just $5. To check their
"legit-ness"
you can click "about," or see the article about them on ZDNet or The
Standard (just search fairtunes.com). The FAQs page on Fairtunes is good,
 too.
Artists have already been cashing checks.

Anyone seen Mountain Con or Pleaseeasaur live? Any reviews, please? I'm
going to see them tomorrow night.

gybe!, ive heard many good things about their live shows and i know they

Subject: [MMouse]: Sound Card Question

 Hi Kids~
(At thirty I'm allowed to say that now)
First off - I'd like to say that I went to Vancouver Wednesday and saw a
band from Victoria called Hot Hot Heat and they blew me away. If you like
ATD-I, add keyboards, and you have Hot Hot Heat. Great energy and a loud
live show! They apparently have quite the following already.
Via Napster, name Mapledaisy, or just do a search for Hot Hot Heat. I
only
found one mp3 so far - will look for more
Next question - we built my old PC into our home stereo (hence the Napster
always running on the cable modem) - quite easy - just "plugged in" to our
tuner - then to the house speakers - voila! All the mp3's and internet
radio stations (a la 3wk.com) are now throughout the house.
Unfortunately,
as mp3's tend to suck ass, the distortion rate is astounding on many
tracks. I think it's from the volume they are recorded at. SO - do you
think a new sound card would do the trick? What should I be looking for?
I've tried re-downloading some of the bad songs, but alas, it's still
distorted and makes it sound like my speakers are blown (they aren't
 YET).
Any advice from you savvy audio techies?

PS: My cousins band Closed Caption Radio (in Vancouver) is in the studio
for CD number two. Check them out on Napster as well - I have a few songs
by them - familiar sound to MM and ATDI - the songs are three years old,
but they still rock. Seattle kids: John Richards at KCMU 90.3 is playing
 them now! woo-hoo!

damn dude (or dudette, i dont know), you just said exactly what ive been
trying to put into words. whats the use of having your vote count if its
not for what you want? the problem with politics today (when it comes to
president campaigns) is that republican and democrats are becoming the same.
i bet you that if there were no political party names (which i think would
be awsome), bush and gore would not be running against eachother, instead
besides eachother. if there were no names of political parties, people
would be voting for issues a president has, rather than the name they carry.
my dad, for example, would vote republican, no matter who the guy was. if
gore was running under the republican name, he would vote gore. and trust
me, hes not the only one.

i mean, from one of my perspectives..i'm kind of angry that people would
rather just vote for who they absolutely wanna see in office, rather than
the better candidate of the two bad candidates who should be in. i have
another perspective entirely on this matter, but it is one way to look at
it if you've had to deal, directly, with a party in some way shape or form
 that's not to your benefit.
 - amy.

You're making absolutely no sense. The reason Bush or Gore will win the
election is because not enough people have voted against these two parties
in the past. If people like you continue to give there vote to one of the
lesser of two evils there will never be any change to the system. What
don't
you understand about this? If Ralph Nader, who in my opinion stands for
what
the Democratic party used to try to stand for, got all the votes of the
people who vote Democrat just cuz they go against Rebulican, then he would
win. But unfortunately people like you will continue to vote in ignorance.
Christ Jesus, educate yourself. If you support Bush, vote for Bush. If you
support Gore and big business and censorship and everything else that
comes
with his party, vote Gore. If you want a change in the government VOTE
NADER. He will not get elected in the next election, but maybe the next
time
around, the greens party can get the same funding the other assholes get.

Re: [MMouse]: how to know who you should vote for

2000-08-28 Thread Blake

i have an even better idea about who to vote for. VOTE FOR WHO YOU WANT.
haha, theres no special formula or answer key for voting for a president.
personally, i wont vote for bush for obvious reasons (abortion being one),
and i wont vote for gore just because he seems like less of an asshole. so
i will vote for nader. my theory is that id would rather vote for someone i
want and not get it...than vote for someone i dont want and get it. and if
nader gets 5% or more votes, the green parties funds will be matched for the
2004 elections. so it will help in the long run. id rather vote for a
party that exists independently (green party) than vote for the
republicrats.

 anyway
if you're in a swing state (ie IL) that could go either way..vote for gore

and if you're in a state that's solid for either gore (NY) or bush (TX)
 VOTE NADER

  primal scream - xtrmntr
yo la tengo - and then nothing...

I went record shopping the other day and I happened to come
accross the "Blue Cadet" 7". I bought it only because I thought it
would be nice to have mm's first release, not expecting it to be very
good. Well I was very suprised: it's really good! "Dukes Up" and "It
Always Rains On a Picnic" are really great songs. It's funny how
high Isaac's voice used to be; he sounded like a chipmunk.
Anyways, I'm suprised those songs weren't included on "BNOOS".

...anyone else have anything to say about Modest Mouse?

  Amy,

I don't know how old you are, but by the maturity of your
messages, I'd say you're about 15 and living in an all white
suburb somewhere. Kids pick on other kids all the fucking time
whether it's because they are fat, ugly, the child of same-sex
parents, dumber than the rest, multi-racial, for having
  the name Melvin, or whatever.

I tend to believe that gay and lesbian parents have the
potential to raise great, well-adjusted kids, with the ability
to handle whatever crap dimwitted kids or adults would throw
at them. Why? Well, the chance of an unwanted pregnancy is
almost none. Adoption is nearly impossible unless they've
jump through a million hoops. So they will tend to be the most
  prepared, involved parents possible.

 uhm, i'm 16 and i live in a $21k one-bedroom house. i've never lived in
suburbia, i went straight from the 'ghetto' of minneapolis to small town
illinois, but thanks for assuming! i got picked on a lot when i was
younger because i was fat and ugly and it didn't feel good. i was going
to
the therapist by the time i was 12, so i dunno about you but trying to
ignore other kids when i'm 10 wasn't very easy for me!
i have nothing wrong with gay parents, and that's something that most of
you seem to be assuming about me and it's starting to really piss me the
fuck off. i'm entitled to my fucking opinion and instead i get classified
as 'ignorant' because of teasing - something that i know quite a bit
about,
 mind you.
i've already said that it would be a nice world if gay and lesbian people
were accepted as great parents, and yeah they probably are in san
francisco
and other gay-friendly places, but there are a lot of places in this world
that *aren't* gay friendly. of course, i'm entitled to my own opinion..oh
wait, no i'm not, i'm WRONG. i also seem to be a gay-basher
which..wow..that's a pretty strong accusation to be throwing around but it
doesn't seem to stop you guys :)
i just don't fucking care. i really don't. you can all suck my asshole
except those of you who were kind enough to stand up for me and/or
personally respond to me saying you didn't think i had the most horrible
points. to those of you who were able to digest the possibility that i
have nothing against gays but at the same time felt that maybe it wouldn't
be the absolute best environment for a child at this point when there's so
much hatred in the world, THANK YOU.
for the rest of you, keep on overanalyzing and reading into people..it's
 what you do best.
 i'm done.

I have to disagree with this line of thought. An
artist is not obligated to place the sticker on their
albums, whereas the MPAA does set the rating on a
movie and studios can only try to bargain their way to
a better rating through creative editing and drafting.
There may have been more of a stigma attached to the
sticker back when 2 Live Crew was being pulled from
every record store in Florida, but believe me when I
say that the sticker rarely affects the purchases of
parents or teens today. Working at a record store
part-time, I've had the opportunity (and the
obligation, through company policy) to inform quite a
few naïve parents that the CD they are about to pick
up for their precocious 8-year-old features explicit
content that is just not suitable for children. It's
unbelievable what parents will buy for their children
and the reasoning behind their decisions.

If working retail doesn't want to make you take up

And when it comes to politics, blowjobs vs. coke, what
has the world come to when the leader of the free
world can only have one and not the other? Seriously,
shouldn't we be more concerned with what a politician
is doing while in office instead of what he did when
he was in college? I'm not trying to claim that it's
acceptable for career politicians to huff ski in their
free time, I'm just saying that I'm more worried about
the president having sex with his interns when he's on
the taxpayers' dime. But we've gone over this before.

I could be wrong here and it might have already been
said but when listening to music from another time
period, one needs to consider the context in which it
was made. Modern music, espically within the last
decade, has basically been created in the same stable
social atmosphere. Sure, MM is kick ass and all, but
is there anything they've said or played that hasnt
been said or played before? Are they revolutionary?
Do they mark something momentous and new in the worlds
of art or sound? As much as I like MM, i'd have to
answer those questions with a ...well, not really. I
think people forget sometimes that when artists like
chuck berry, elvis, the beatles, the who, black
sabbath, zepplin, the clash, and even early eighties
bands like minor threat, black flag, or maybe big
black (not to mention a million others) were making
music, thought, and performance one, society was a
much different, much more constricting and
confrontational place. Consider music in regards to
when it was made and how those people were pushing
their limits, the way people push them now. I mean,
when you really consider how close minded society was
when chuck berry was rockin out, or how one generation
was finally discovering freedom from the old guard
with the beatles as they came of age, it seems like
such a more beautiful and admirable, almost magical
thing. People fighting to just be able to express
their confusion and exasperation from life. I know, i
know, no one was disrespecting the past or what they
did, but i just think maybe you should think about
music not in relation to what it sounds like today or
five years ago, but in relation to what else was
around at the time that it was made. Dont look at
something and think "cockrock hair band" when that
term never even existed until after they were gone.
 Oh lordy.

mailorder, since I always enjoy the feeling of an album coming in the
mail,
despite the chance of a prolonged wait.

Plus, I don't wanna search in town and find that it's an import and costs
twice as much as I would ever need to pay.

Also, I would definitely need suggestions (which album best defines...
"this
a great GYBE album to get started on-- more "accessible"), and, mind you,
I
 have a record player...

 please help.

Also, I've heard a lot of suggestion from the FLips list, but I wanted to
hear from another source if anyone digs the Moles? which album to get, if
 able?

Oh, and I like pants too... but I'll keep out of that silly thread.

 I'd rather discuss lampshades...

and how it makes my light shine,

 Jacob

[MMouse]: VUE lastnight...

2000-07-13 Thread blake

ROCK!! VUE was so amazing lastnight, if any
of you get the chance to see em, i highly recomend it. they make me
realize that it is possible to play sexy rock n roll and not be a pretentious
butthole. they put on such a rad show, i took like 24 pics of just
them. ok, thats enough.

Re: [MMouse]: blackheart procession and weezer

2000-07-13 Thread blake

they play all the time here in OC...then again, OC is only like 45 minutes
from san diego...which is where they are from. and they rock the mothah
grabbin hizouse live. their new 3 song 12"/CD isnt all that great, but the
12" has a rad print on one of the side. but they do rock very hard(in the
depressing bad ass sense) live and on most of their albums.

Its been a while since ive seen the movie, and its been a
while since this group had a rather long discusion on it, but
i remember us all talking about the occurance of the number
86 was it? or 28, or 82, something with and 8, i was
wondering if anyone had a tally of how many times it appeared
 in the film.. just curious

sorry, friend but Magnolia is no ripoff.

First, if anything, magnolia is an homage (big
difference) to Nashville, which Altman made in the
70's. If you watch that movie (brilliant, but not as
important as magnolia) you will notice that triplett
and the main old guy are both in magnolia, which shows
PTA's sense of humor and his knowledge that he was
  "ripping off" altman.

Second, Short Cuts is an adaptation of a Raymond
Carver collection of stories, Magnolia is an original.

Third, just because julianne moore is in it also
  doesnt make it a ripoff.

Fourth, buy the new lifter puller record, It's great

if you liked magnolia, check out the movie that magnolia ripped off. its
called "short cuts" and if you watch it...you will totally notice the
blatent simalarities. dont get me wrong, i loved magnolia, but its a rip
off of 1992's "short cuts". also highly recomended.

yeah im a tard mullet..but i just saw magnolia last night (seriously it
didnt come to any theaters in this area until now..at the cheapo $1.50
theater) and yeah i love it blah blah blah..i remember a while ago a lot
of talk about it on here...like all the odd references to the whole
frogs raining down exodus 8:2 passege in the bible...id like to hear
comments and maybe some things i would have missed (i didnt pay too much
attention to possible clues like the clocks pointing to 8 and 2 and all, i
was just soaking the movie in you know) but anyway yeah it was
great..so much more sinscere than all the other high quality movies of the
past year or two...like, fight club, american beauty...all
those...altho they were all good movies..they still had this sleazy
hollywood-ness to them underneath...that came out in the way that these
movies were, like most hollywood movies..very geared towards white
males...has anyone else noticed this? like..its hard to explain..but these
movies are very good..but still made with the intention of appealing to
the male brain. but anyway, i saw none of this going on in magnolia..it
 was just great.

In case you weren't paying attention, here is a recap (in alphabetical
order) of all the bands that were listed in the recent Wanted: Your Faves
thread. Bands with a * are bands I'd actually recommend someone listen
to,
and bands with a ^ are bands that have kick ass names. If you see a % it
means that the group makes bad music and should be avoided (none of this,
"they were good from 92-94" shit. And also no "But they've had such an
influence" bullshit) And the @ sign is my little secret. Elvis Costello
was
not listed, nor was Bjork, which is dumb.

and, while i agree that the epic liner notes could have used some

it's a little stiff it's essentially saying the same thing as "they
become angels and fly around you" as on Bruce's page. excluding the
whole porn usage of "cum," it's still a word. it's like
model-cum-actress, pop. usage making it synonymous to "become" ...
 latin origin, my guess.

but i just stare at words all day, so feel free to tell me to fuck

I'm starting to plan for our big adventure to Orange County and the big
 picnic..

I'm trying to fill in the 5.5 days we'll be there with as much good times
as
 possible..
While I could care less about tar pits and star's homes... I'd like to see
 some of the sights..

I've got Bob's Big Boy Burgers, In-Out burger, and Roscoe's on my list.
 Also pencilied in is
Lumpy Gravy.. a Frank Zappa theme restaurant and record store?! Anyone
been
 there?
(So I like to eat, leave me alone)

Anyone seen the "Laserium" at the planeterium? I see they have an 80's
show
 where it's all music
from the 80's? I've seen enough pink floyd laser light shows... a light
show set to the Go Go's and
Herbie Hancock would be keen :)

It's dissapointing to see one of the Mann theaters (is there more than
one?)
 has stopped showing revival
films on their late night program... looked like a super theater
anyone have an online source that has an all inclusive movie schedule
page??
I would think you could find one rather easily in LA, but I haven't found
a
 web page like that yet.

Any of you CA guys have any ideas for me? Let me know!

sorry to be nitpicky, blake, but while one could trace the word origins in
the manner of which you have done, it's not quite correct. the homo in
homophobic refers specifically to "homosexual." your post gave me pause
enough to think, "shit, have i been using a completely incorrect term all
along?," so i checked with two of my best friends: mr. webster, and mr
american heritage. here are their full and complete definitions,
 respectively:
Homophobia = n. [[HOMO(SEXUAL) + PHOBIA]] irrational hatred or fear of
 homosexuals or homosexuality
homophobia n. 1. aversion to gay or homosexual people or their lifestyle
or
culture 2. Behavior or an act based on this aversion [HOMO(SEXUAL) +
PHOBIA]
anyhow, that's what they say. and i promise this post isn't meant to come
across as me being an asshole; it's me sharing my discovery spurred by
your
 provocation.

by the way, anybody on this list ever watch "fishing with john?" i didn't
have IFC when it first aired, so i sadly missed out on it then. but,
thank
god for dvds, i finally saw it. amazingly hilarious. i recommmend it to
everyone on the list. you might even be able to find it on video.
(for those unfamiliar, it's john lurie {of the lounge lizards, and various
jim jarmusch films} fishing in various locales of the world alternately
with
tom waits, willem dafoe, dennis hopper, jim jarmusch, and matt dillon. it
is
 absolutely hilarious, especially the narrator).

 love + dictionaries =

  homo=same

   homo+phobia= fear of the same.

i dont know about you but im affraid of not having any variety in my
life.
 i
want things to be different and not monotonous and not always the same.
i
know thats not what you meant when you said homophobic...just like
anyone
else out there calling poeple homophobic for using the term "fag", but
do
you get my point? words dont always mean exactly what they are always
 meant
   to.

[MMouse]: list of records LATELY with good packaging, ect...

2000-06-16 Thread Blake

-the crimson curse clear LP is one sided and no the side with no stuff, its
got black bugs that show through on the other side.
-combat wounded veteran always has rad stuff done with their records, like
the split with scrotum grinder.
-kontrataque 7" was put together with a rad screen printed band that ties
with twine.
-suicide nation's 12" includes a paper bag with a cool little picture screen
printed on it...with the suicida nation name as well.
-acrid/left for dead record was printed on a vinyl the shape of a saw blade.
-new cattle decapitation LP has a gatefold case.

the list goes on of course...and all of these were put out within a year or
so (some re-releases). my point is that bands are still putting out albums
with creativity in the art...you just gotta know where to look.

Other giveaways to the cheapness are how they always use the
same standard labels on the records and also lack of gatefold albums

The Black Heart Procession 3 Song recording has a nice picture on the side
 that has no music.
but, it's the only non-standard graphic I have ever seen on an Up LP.

My main complaint lately with vinyl is definitely the packaging. Lack of
gatefold, and/or lyric/info sheet is definitely crumby.

I really do miss the days when records came with posters/lyric
sheets/phone
 books/kitchen sinks/etc
Not that there are not some great packagings out there..
Award for best packaging ever has to go to Godspeed You Black Emperor's
 f#a#(infinity)
that thing comes with a PACKAGE.flat candian penny, flyers for shows,
cryptic writings, prints of locomotive engines, etc

ah pretty pictures to look at !!!

and whats the deal with the moon and antarctica being priced at
$17.99even the swell indie record shops are selling it for this price.
i'll buy it tho, as i've already downloaded all the songs from napster and
burned them on cd months ago...just wish there was more incentive to
buy
the lp other than supporting the band, etc.

vinyl packages are like boxes of cereal. they should excite us to rip open
the box/sleeve and delve in for the special prizes but even cereal
has
gone downhill. nowadays you have to collect 50 proofs of purchase and mail
them to whomever to redeem whatever is probably out of stock anyway.

i totally agree with you. the main reason why i love(d) modest mouse is
because their music was so simple and when you listen to it...it makes you

It's not really indie rock, and it is really dark and brooding.

If you are offended and disgusted by them, you are

Sometimes the etymology of a word can be very useful, other times its just
garbage..this is garbage. Language needs at least context and content to
be
of use to anyone. If I say Phil is gay, I could either mean he is happy,
or
I could mean he is a homosexual, and its only in the context of the
conversation (remember that stuff?) that you can understand my intent.
Context is necessary, its what gives us the ability to communicate
efficently enough with one another to convey information. And it is
certainly possible, and probable, to convey information when it is not
intended. For example: I'm talking to someone about Kosovo, they
continually reffer to the "Kosovarians" and talk about the conflict as
being
a battle for control of the Dead Sea. Though they haven't said "I don't
know anything about the Balkans" they have said it well enough for me to
understand. They certainly didn't mean to say such a thing, but the
information was still conveyed, just as someone can betray themselves to
be
a "passive homophobe" (even though I still don't know what that means) by
things which are said, but are not explicitly stated. And as to Phil's
post
about chewing someone out because they used the word gay, you missed the
point. It wasn't that "gay" or "homosexual" is a bad word, but in using
it
to degrade someone, you are only degrading homosexuals. Would you call
someone an Indian Giver? I would hope not, and I'd thank you not to in my
 presence.

i wanted to put in my two cents on this one: check out dilated peoples.
they
are amazingly fresh. they played here tonight but i didn't feel like
 shelling
out the $17. why is it that hip hop shows are so expensive?

sorry all, for being so damn lazy on the hot kids page, which, fyi, is
 at

 http://indieboots.digitalsushi.com/hotboys
 http://indieboots.digitalsushi.com/hotgirls

im mustering up the nerve to make it more modem friendly. but its going
to take like an hour and a half to do and im such a fucking slacker.
anyone whom i owe tapes, letters, etc to can verify my slackerness.
so email me yr pics, i keep them in a special folder and when i get
around to changing/putting them up, they will go up. dig?

2000-05-24 Thread Blake

hahaha, we started a pit at a promise ring show as a total joke. we also
did it at a jimmy eat world show, killingtons, and just about any other show
that you wouldnt expect dancing. we were called the X Promise X Ring X
Dance X Team X. yeah, it was really fun, but the best part about it was
when tough guys would try and say "hey asshole, dont bump into my
girlfriend, i'll rip your face off if you fuck up my emo trance one more
time." assholes. anyways yeah, most of the time dancing at those kinda
shows are a joke.

people mosh to anyhthing now a days. at a jimmy aet world show people
started
moshing at a very slow guitar solo. it was ridiculous.and they crowd surf
too
? ? ? completely ruining it for short or small people who have no idea
they
just ended up in the middle of a pit. then get worked.

oh, we didnt "mosh"...we danced ghetto booty style and shit like that. the
people who tried to fight us hurt us more than we hurt them by bumping into
them. so yeah, dont think we were trying to get tough guy *windmill*
*can-can* shit...we save that for hellfest 2000!!

[MMouse]: modest mouse lyrics...

2000-05-23 Thread Blake

is it just me or do modest mouse lyrics remind you
a lot of charles bukowski stories and poems? they all seem to be about
drinking and thinking. im not complain, im just wondering if anybody else
thought about that.
