This is the band that SHOULD be getting the hype that AT THE DRIVE-IN is getting. i guess i'm getting me ass kicked. i dont plan on seeing either of those bands. but i figured i'd let everyone know !!! will be playing in Boston on Mon. Nov 13 (@ the Middle East w/90 Day Men and Oxes) and Providence on Tues. Nov 14 (@ either Fort Thunder or someplace on RSDI w/90 Day Men, Oxes, and hopefully Lightning Bolt). theyre the best live band in the world so you may as well go. and modest mouse were way better in providence than philly. and i cant figure out why they dont finish gods shoeshine.

For those of you kids who dig Les Savy Fav - you really should check out Hot Hot Heat, especially the song "Circus Maximus." They also have keyboards that take some getting used to, but once you do, OOOHHH baby! I have a bunch on Napster (I'm Mapledaisy), including their flip-side singles with Red Light Sting, but I'm happiest with Circus Maximus. I also found a cool web site called Fairtunes.com. It's a "virtual tip-jar" for artists. Therefore, if you download quite a few songs from a band that you like and respect, but have no further motive for actually purchasing any other their "printed" work, you can go to fairtunes.com and enter your credit card (just hear me out here!) and they send monthly checks to the artists. You can enter just $5. To check their "legit-ness" you can click "about," or see the article about them on ZDNet or The Standard (just search fairtunes.com). The FAQs page on Fairtunes is good, too. Artists have already been cashing checks. Anyone seen Mountain Con or Pleaseeasaur live? Any reviews, please? I'm going to see them tomorrow night. Old Stace

If you like ATD-I, add keyboards, and you have Hot Hot Heat. Great energy and a loud live show! They apparently have quite the following already. Via Napster, name Mapledaisy, or just do a search for Hot Hot Heat. I only found one mp3 so far - will look for more Next question - we built my old PC into our home stereo (hence the Napster always running on the cable modem) - quite easy - just "plugged in" to our tuner - then to the house speakers - voila! All the mp3's and internet radio stations (a la 3wk.com) are now throughout the house. Unfortunately, as mp3's tend to suck ass, the distortion rate is astounding on many tracks. I think it's from the volume they are recorded at. SO - do you think a new sound card would do the trick? What should I be looking for? I've tried re-downloading some of the bad songs, but alas, it's still distorted and makes it sound like my speakers are blown (they aren't YET). Any advice from you savvy audio techies? PS: My cousins band Closed Caption Radio (in Vancouver) is in the studio for CD number two. Check them out on Napster as well - I have a few songs by them - familiar sound to MM and ATDI - the songs are three years old, but they still rock. Seattle kids: John Richards at KCMU 90.3 is playing them now! woo-hoo! Stace

Re: [MMouse]: how to know who you should vote for
damn dude (or dudette, i dont know), you just said exactly what ive been trying to put into words. whats the use of having your vote count if its not for what you want? the problem with politics today (when it comes to president campaigns) is that republican and democrats are becoming the same. i bet you that if there were no political party names (which i think would be awsome), bush and gore would not be running against eachother, instead besides eachother. if there were no names of political parties, people would be voting for issues a president has, rather than the name they carry. my dad, for example, would vote republican, no matter who the guy was. if gore was running under the republican name, he would vote gore. and trust me, hes not the only one. Love and Lemmings Blake Sinclair http://members.xoom.com/berzercker - Original Message - From: Alex Silva [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, August 29, 2000 12:21 PM Subject: RE: [MMouse]: how to know who you should vote for i mean, from one of my perspectives..i'm kind of angry that people would rather just vote for who they absolutely wanna see in office, rather than the better candidate of the two bad candidates who should be in. i have another perspective entirely on this matter, but it is one way to look at it if you've had to deal, directly, with a party in some way shape or form that's not to your benefit. - amy. You're making absolutely no sense. The reason Bush or Gore will win the election is because not enough people have voted against these two parties in the past. If people like you continue to give there vote to one of the lesser of two evils there will never be any change to the system. What don't you understand about this? If Ralph Nader, who in my opinion stands for what the Democratic party used to try to stand for, got all the votes of the people who vote Democrat just cuz they go against Rebulican, then he would win. But unfortunately people like you will continue to vote in ignorance. Christ Jesus, educate yourself. If you support Bush, vote for Bush. If you support Gore and big business and censorship and everything else that comes with his party, vote Gore. If you want a change in the government VOTE NADER. He will not get elected in the next election, but maybe the next time around, the greens party can get the same funding the other assholes get.
Re: [MMouse]: how to know who you should vote for
i have an even better idea about who to vote for. VOTE FOR WHO YOU WANT. haha, theres no special formula or answer key for voting for a president. personally, i wont vote for bush for obvious reasons (abortion being one), and i wont vote for gore just because he seems like less of an asshole. so i will vote for nader. my theory is that id would rather vote for someone i want and not get it...than vote for someone i dont want and get it. and if nader gets 5% or more votes, the green parties funds will be matched for the 2004 elections. so it will help in the long run. id rather vote for a party that exists independently (green party) than vote for the republicrats. i saw "steal this movie" the other night and i must say, i was very pleased. i went in with low expectations and left feeling very pissed off. not pissed off because the movie sucked(because it didnt, it was very well done), but pissed off cause it really made me realize how fucked our system is. sure, democracy is one of the best system in the world today, and i really dont know what i would rather have, but seeing the that movie, and watching the DNC on TV all week really made me disrespect cops even more than i already did. anyways, go see it if any of you get the chance. and if any of you arent familiar with it, its a biography on abbie hoffman, the author of "steal this book" which was like an anarchists cookbook of the 60's, and he wrote it in jail. the movie was asistant directed by abbies lawyer. so go see it! another recomended movie was "but im a cheerleader". hahaha, i cant get enough of ru paul. it just cracks me up. I bought it only because I thought it would be nice to have mm's first release, not expecting it to be very good. Well I was very suprised: it's really good! "Dukes Up" and "It Always Rains On a Picnic" are really great songs. It's funny how high Isaac's voice used to be; he sounded like a chipmunk. Anyways, I'm suprised those songs weren't included on "BNOOS". ...anyone else have anything to say about Modest Mouse?

Kids pick on other kids all the fucking time whether it's because they are fat, ugly, the child of same-sex parents, dumber than the rest, multi-racial, for having the name Melvin, or whatever. I tend to believe that gay and lesbian parents have the potential to raise great, well-adjusted kids, with the ability to handle whatever crap dimwitted kids or adults would throw at them. Why? Well, the chance of an unwanted pregnancy is almost none. Adoption is nearly impossible unless they've jump through a million hoops. So they will tend to be the most prepared, involved parents possible. uhm, i'm 16 and i live in a $21k one-bedroom house. i've never lived in suburbia, i went straight from the 'ghetto' of minneapolis to small town illinois, but thanks for assuming! i got picked on a lot when i was younger because i was fat and ugly and it didn't feel good. i was going to the therapist by the time i was 12, so i dunno about you but trying to ignore other kids when i'm 10 wasn't very easy for me! i have nothing wrong with gay parents, and that's something that most of you seem to be assuming about me and it's starting to really piss me the fuck off. i'm entitled to my fucking opinion and instead i get classified as 'ignorant' because of teasing - something that i know quite a bit about, mind you. i've already said that it would be a nice world if gay and lesbian people were accepted as great parents, and yeah they probably are in san francisco and other gay-friendly places, but there are a lot of places in this world that *aren't* gay friendly. of course, i'm entitled to my own opinion..oh wait, no i'm not, i'm WRONG. i also seem to be a gay-basher which..wow..that's a pretty strong accusation to be throwing around but it doesn't seem to stop you guys :) i just don't fucking care. i really don't. you can all suck my asshole except those of you who were kind enough to stand up for me and/or personally respond to me saying you didn't think i had the most horrible points. to those of you who were able to digest the possibility that i have nothing against gays but at the same time felt that maybe it wouldn't be the absolute best environment for a child at this point when there's so much hatred in the world, THANK YOU. for the rest of you, keep on overanalyzing and reading into people..it's what you do best. i'm done. - amy

I have to disagree with this line of thought. An artist is not obligated to place the sticker on their albums, whereas the MPAA does set the rating on a movie and studios can only try to bargain their way to a better rating through creative editing and drafting. There may have been more of a stigma attached to the sticker back when 2 Live Crew was being pulled from every record store in Florida, but believe me when I say that the sticker rarely affects the purchases of parents or teens today. Working at a record store part-time, I've had the opportunity (and the obligation, through company policy) to inform quite a few naïve parents that the CD they are about to pick up for their precocious 8-year-old features explicit content that is just not suitable for children. It's unbelievable what parents will buy for their children and the reasoning behind their decisions. If working retail doesn't want to make you take up social work sometimes... And when it comes to politics, blowjobs vs. coke, what has the world come to when the leader of the free world can only have one and not the other? Seriously, shouldn't we be more concerned with what a politician is doing while in office instead of what he did when he was in college? I'm not trying to claim that it's acceptable for career politicians to huff ski in their free time, I'm just saying that I'm more worried about the president having sex with his interns when he's on the taxpayers' dime. Modern music, espically within the last decade, has basically been created in the same stable social atmosphere. Sure, MM is kick ass and all, but is there anything they've said or played that hasnt been said or played before? Are they revolutionary? Do they mark something momentous and new in the worlds of art or sound? As much as I like MM, i'd have to answer those questions with a ...well, not really. I think people forget sometimes that when artists like chuck berry, elvis, the beatles, the who, black sabbath, zepplin, the clash, and even early eighties bands like minor threat, black flag, or maybe big black (not to mention a million others) were making music, thought, and performance one, society was a much different, much more constricting and confrontational place. Consider music in regards to when it was made and how those people were pushing their limits, the way people push them now. I mean, when you really consider how close minded society was when chuck berry was rockin out, or how one generation was finally discovering freedom from the old guard with the beatles as they came of age, it seems like such a more beautiful and admirable, almost magical thing. People fighting to just be able to express their confusion and exasperation from life. I know, i know, no one was disrespecting the past or what they did, but i just think maybe you should think about music not in relation to what it sounds like today or five years ago, but in relation to what else was around at the time that it was made. Dont look at something and think "cockrock hair band" when that term never even existed until after they were gone. Oh lordy. __ Do You Yahoo!? Get Yahoo! [[HOMO(SEXUAL) + PHOBIA]] irrational hatred or fear of homosexuals or homosexuality homophobia n. 1. aversion to gay or homosexual people or their lifestyle or culture 2. Behavior or an act based on this aversion [HOMO(SEXUAL) + PHOBIA] anyhow, that's what they say. and i promise this post isn't meant to come across as me being an asshole; it's me sharing my discovery spurred by your provocation. by the way, anybody on this list ever watch "fishing with john?" i didn't have IFC when it first aired, so i sadly missed out on it then. but, thank god for dvds, i finally saw it. amazingly hilarious. i recommmend it to everyone on the list. you might even be able to find it on video. Language needs at least context and content to be of use to anyone. If I say Phil is gay, I could either mean he is happy, or I could mean he is a homosexual, and its only in the context of the conversation (remember that stuff?) that you can understand my intent. Context is necessary, its what gives us the ability to communicate efficently enough with one another to convey information. And it is certainly possible, and probable, to convey information when it is not intended. For example: I'm talking to someone about Kosovo, they continually reffer to the "Kosovarians" and talk about the conflict as being a battle for control of the Dead Sea. Though they haven't said "I don't know anything about the Balkans" they have said it well enough for me to understand. They certainly didn't mean to say such a thing, but the information was still conveyed, just as someone can betray themselves to be a "passive homophobe" (even though I still don't know what that means) by things which are said, but are not explicitly stated. And as to Phil's post about chewing someone out because they used the word gay, you missed the point. It wasn't that "gay" or "homosexual" is a bad word, but in using it to degrade someone, you are only degrading homosexuals. Would you call someone an Indian Giver? I would hope not, and I'd thank you not to in my presence. Re: [MMouse]: New Murder City Devils album
new sunny day i thought was boring, i really dont like it. and i do like the new MCD, but i liked them better when they were more punkish and original than slow dark rock n roll. i love rock n roll...but i like it when turbonegro does it...not MCD. ~Blake Sinclair - Original Message - From: steven hahnel [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, June 06, 2000 4:34 PM Subject: Re: [MMouse]: New Murder City Devils album obviously youre entitled to your own opinion...but man, what are you talking about?! the new murder city is fucking awesome! the new belle and sebastian, on the other hand, is not. youre rightabout murder city thoughh, its totally rock and roll, thats what theyre all about. new sunny day, also awesome. new radio 4, yep. Re: [MMouse]: New Murder City Devils album
yeah! it seems when a band wants to try and make money, they turn to emoish music...ex: blink 182, face to face, pennywise, lagwagon. there are more but i cant think very straight right now. and dont ask my opinion on the new sdre album cause i dont like them very much to begin with. im gonna take the promo from my work and compress it to mp3 format so if you have napster and wanna hear it...my napster name is "OBandana_ThrashO". so feel free to download from me. ~blake - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, June 07, 2000 8:31 AM Subject: Re: [MMouse]: New Murder City Devils album what does the new sdre sound like? i heard one song which to me sounded like a mix from LP2 and how it feels i kinda liked it and alot bands are slowing down their music to an "emoish" sound now... which is crazy. like face to face :*( anyways im still late for work jesse
