Checkout Apache::SizeLimit. You can put something like this in your startup.pl:

use Apache::SizeLimit;
$Apache::SizeLimit::MAX_PROCESS_UNSHARED_SIZE = 20000;
$Apache::SizeLimit::CHECK_EVERY_N_REQUESTS = 2;
