Re: [Mono-list] EntryPointNotFoundException: map_Mono_Posix_PollEvents

Hey,
Installing from today's cvs should not have this problem.
But even then, can you try update and install
cvsmcs/class/Mono.Posix
and cvs/mono/support ?

RE: [Mono-list] Is Mono ready to compete with MS .NET inrealbusiness?

2004-10-02 Thread Pablo Chacin

I'm not sure that such a developing platform should be priority for Mono. Is there other open source initiatives like Sharp Develop or some related to Eclipse, that could better address this issues. The main focus for Mono must be, in my opinion, complete the implementation of the .Net framework. Until we have Windows.Forms, no matter how good the development tools could be, it will be of a very limited interest for developers. I stoped using it as I found that writing console applications with mono was of very limited value for me and my customers.

Also, take into consideration that the main business issue around Mono in not about taking the developers out of windows, but the users, in special when we talk about very large companies.

-Original Message-Message: 7Subject: RE: [Mono-list] Is Mono ready to compete with MS .NET inrealbusiness?Date: Thu, 30 Sep 2004 14:11:26 -0400From: "Max Metral" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "mono-list mailing list" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To assert that VIM is good enough is exactly why "Mono" (the overallconcept) is not competitive as a *business* development platform yet. Is itsuitable for some people and tasks? Definitely. It's also suitable forpeople who want to contribute their time to improving it, who don't want topay for or don't need a more full featured development environment, or whoenjoy tweaking for educational purposes. But for business development, sortof by definition, it's not there.I've been programming for 15 years, on both Unix'en and MSFT platforms atvarious times, and I know there are pluses and minuses to both; I'm not aMSFT blind follower. But there is no minus to having a usable debugger, orauto statement completion, or an integrated help system. They speed updevelopment time, full stop. That doesn't mean I need a class browser orsome form building widget, although again many businesses will view that aspart of being "competitive." As importantly, there IS an inherentdisadvantage to having to spend a huge amount of time recreating orimproving all these things. Someone has to do it, no question, and thosepeople are rightfully revered and appreciated in open source efforts. Butfor most business applications, the owner of the business is not going tosee value in the person who was supposed to be writing the WidgetManager appworking on a new debugger for a programming language. Their time is moreexpensive than Windows + VS.Net + a new car.So again, I love Mono, and I look for places where I can be helpful bylending stuff I know that maybe other people might have a harder timefinding out, or where I'm particularly suited or interested in a particularfeature. But in the end, as a guy in a small startup company, I can't spendthe huge amount of time (and therefore money) required to build a debuggeror get Mono fully working on OS X, even though I wish I could, and so Iwait. And unless the original poster is in a position to do this, I would stillsubmit that the answer to his question, right now, is "no, Mono is notcompetitive with MSFT in real business yet."Heck, part of the brilliance of Mono is that it doesn't HAVE to becompetitive in all aspects yet. It embraces and extends MSFT.Net. You wantto use VS? Sure, have a ball with all the widgets and doo-hingies. Thenrun it on MacOSX or Linux using the same binary. Finally, somebody realizedthe way to take on MSFT is to beat them at their own game.

The problem with this specific issue (which is coming up in a cpl
places) is that people cvs up Managed-WinForms, or all of mcs, but leave
the mono stuff alone. When there is an addition (like this one) that
requires updating both, they get issues.

It seems like anyone using cvs should be somehow *forced* to do make
bootstrap in mono/ and by default it should be more difficult (require
an option) to even build in the root mcs/ dir.

That would cut down on a lot of these inane questions.

[Mono-list] make bootstrap isn't copying mscorlib.dll correctly

2004-10-02 Thread Francisco Figueiredo Jr.

Hi all,
Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but I, IMHO, think that makebootstrap
isn't copying correctly the mscorlib.dll assembly.

I just use make bootstrap after updating from cvs head. Sometimes, I
face myself with the out of synch problem, but I don't know why this
happens as I'm doing make bootstrap.

I could notice that the mscorlib.dll isn't being copied to
monoprefix/install/lib neither to monoprefix/install/lib/mono/1.0/

I also tried make install with no luck :)
I noticed that if I do a make install in mcs/class/corlib, this copies
the mscorlib to monoprefix/install/lib/mono/1.0/ but not to
monoprefix/install/lib/

Is this by design?
Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
Could you confirm if this is happening to your basecode too?
Thanks in advance.

Francisco Figueiredo Jr.

2 things.

1) Since this is a MonoDevelop question, this should go on the
MonoDevelop list. (Which is also hosted on lists.ximian.com)

2) If you are using one project, MonoDevelop shouldn't have any issues
at all. If you have 2 projects in one solution, you should be able to
add a project reference to the second project. If you are using seperate
solutions, you will need to add an Assembly reference to the second
project. In general, for development, using 2 projects inside one
solution is your best bet.
