Just checked out the licence for Smart Client/CAB at

different from the one for Web Client Software Factory
(http://www.codeplex.com/websf/Project/License.aspx). It seems that
WebSF can only be run on Windows, but no such restriction on CAB.

Check section 3(F) of CAB's license. You've basically no rights to
run this software on a platform != Windows.

IANAL, but there seems to be some wiggle room there: Mono can run on
Windows. If you use Mono, and make sure you support Windows, then you
should be okay still to use CAB in your Mono application. However,
probably best to get advice from a lawyer in your area. :)

Hi Guys,

The Mono will give support to CAB model (http://www.codeplex.com/websf and
http://www.codeplex.com/smartclient? The idea of the CAB is very good but it
will be that it would be good for adopting?

As mentioned in section 10 of the license:

the code can't be used on Linux.

Hello,

The old problem of the licenses…

I once spoke with Scott about this issue (it was related to the license
chosen for the starter kits) and he said that it was probably an
oversight and that they would not mind changing the license.

You could try contacting them and asking them to use the other
SharedSousrce license that does not include the Only on Windows
clause.

Hi Pedro,

Both projects are covered by the Microsoft EULA, iirc.

If so, it's not allowed to use them on non-windows operating systems.

Scott Guthrie?

I'll put in my word for changing the license to SharedSource but in my
experience Microsoft has never been very good at listening to their forums /
users :)

Do you think that with Novell's recent deal with Microsoft that there could
be some extra leverage to get this to happen? We've been spending lots of
time on the CAB and I don't know how I built apps without some kind of
plugin/composite framework before.

The other option is to have the MonoDevelop add-in architecture be a
seperate enough that people can build plugin architectures with it rather
than something like CAB. The nice thing about CAB is ObjectBuilder and it's
dependency injection

The CAB is really very good. Now they are creating the CAB for ASP.NET that
will be extremely useful. The Novell could try to change this license for
us. ;) hehehhe
