[MOPO] Yes, Very Depressing Prices!

2004-12-08 Thread Tom A. Pennock

Hi Phil:

Thank's for the interesting post. Talk about give away prices.
Amazing!!!  Also very depressing. I remember in the early 1970's getting a
catalog from a collector/dealer in the Chicago area. He had almost all the
window cards from the "classic" 1950's sci-fi movies for between $8.00 and
$10.00 each. At that time I was a "newbie" and did not have much money. I wish I
could look that list over again now. But maybe it's better if I don't. His
prices were so giveaway. I did pick up some nice Abbott & Costello "mint"
lobby  sets for $16.00 per set from another dealer. I do remember Larry
Edmonds very well! At the time I had no idea what this stuff would
eventually be worth. Just like when you started collecting.

Re: [MOPO] pass the razorblades, please

2004-12-08 Thread Phil Edwards

Tom - For really
severe depression, I thumb through a 500 page Larry Edmunds Bookshop
catalogue from the early 70s. Yup, feel the need to whip up a good case of Pass
the Razorblades, just get this off the shelf and spend 5 minutes in the poster
section... and remember Edmunds were the MOST expensive dealers in this stuff at
the time.

Here's just one either a
half sheet or insert of SOME LIKE IT HOT... $8.95 each.

But it's all relative to the
times - I can still remember (this poor old brain) hum-and-hawing during one
NY-SF-LA poster trip over whether I would take the FORBIDDEN PLANET one sheet
that was $90, or the slightly better one that was $150... and the other dealer
down the road had one at $100. And, oh my, but $200 seemed a lot of money
for  a DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL 22x28.

Was there any rush to go
spend a grand on that rolled KING KONG Insert that week in NYC? There
was a rolled half sheet somewhere else for the same money and a folded
insert for $600 - a lot of money in the 70s or sitting in a SF coffee shop
argy-bargying a trade for a LETTER one sheet for  CREATURE FROM THE BLACK
LAGOON one sheet... because back then a LETTER was a hotter title. Of course
Blacky won the day, because back then (with some exceptions) people collected
what they liked and loved and knew, and not what it was worth... although one
trade I heard of - a KING KONG insert for  KINGS OF THE SUN insert left me
somewhat gob-smacked. Ah, the great old days. Now where's that corn-cob pipe and
bottle of gin?

I have been getting MCW from the very beginning. I mean way way back when
it started in 1976 . The editor was Alan Light and also Rick Best. It was
called "Film Collector's World" then. Later it became a Krause Publication and
I continued to receive it. Then Brian bought it and it comes every month. It's
really a tradition. Our bible of the hobby. I used to save all the
back issues as well as the back issues of "The Big Reel". If you want to
do something really depressing go back to some of the first issues and look at
the prices. Unbelieveable!!! They were give away prices then. This hobby

Vaughn is absolutely right! It was called "FCW" for a
few years into my subscription...mid 80s (around
advent of video as a viable market) saw the change.

Hello,
The computer has a vast network of People(movie interest);
Places(1000's of strange ones) and Things (poster of all
kinds)..but, MCW is the foundation, the underpinning of
the movie collector establishment. It was, and still is, although many do
not realize it, the core, a nucleus of our hobby. It is the common
thread that all of us might meet. There is no other place...including
MOPO.
I cannot remember how long I have been receiving it; certainly the early
80's or before.  I know that initially it was all black/white; no
color, but, Wow! Couldn't wait to get it each two
weeks. The very talented and creative Brian Bukantis
has maintained a great paper over the years experimenting with various
forms of publishing in an effort the "fight the net". He has
survived, thus far, but.I'm sure he needs all the support
he can get and I find it hard to believe that anyone would not subscribe
that is remotely interested in "movie
memorabilia"...
Go now to
www.mcwonline.com
and subscribe for $29.95 (12 great issues).Support Your Hobby.

I cannot agree more with Dr. Vollin. Every movie poster collector should be
subscribed. We should really support such great publication. Its of OUR hobby.
Surely, it has gone thinner but there is always something great to read about.
I have been a subscriber to MCW since 1998, I think and will not do without it.
I hope MCW will never go away. I miss David writing in it. I miss the auction
reviews and his insight into our hobby. Dr. V is always a great read. His
pieces have gone much better. I love the poster auction results review of Dr.
V. Too bad, MCW cannot reprint some older articles of poster collecting such as
the German poster reviews or others. This would be extremely interesting for
newer subscribers and collectors.
In any case, I always love receiving MCW every month.

[MOPO] still subscribe to MCW?

2004-12-08 Thread Walton, Jeffrey

Just
wondering how many people still subscribe to Movie Collector's World.  I
stumbled upon an old copy (Dec 1999) in my office while I was getting ready
to move to my new office - and just realized how much I missed it.  I
think this internet thing sort of got in the way but looking back -  oh
how I hated calling only to hear those words..."Sorry it sold
already'"  DAMN.oh how I later loved this showing up on my doorstep via
FedEx so I could grab all the hot deals prior to anyone else "yes I still
have it" -  It was a place to peruse all the dealers in one
place.  It was a place where Stephen Fisher would offer you $2,800 for
Creature of the Black Lagoon one sheet or $31,000 for a Black Cat one sheet (see
what our guy Todd has his for on ebay right now - beautiful poster btw).
It was a place to find Bags Unlimited, auction news, events, Reelin in the
news...Granada Posters, Moe's Movie Madness, Motion Picture Arts Gallery's full
page ad, The Last Moving Picture Company's alphabetical ads which always seem to
cut off just above the title I was looking for, the back page Bruce ad,
Walter Reuben (where I got my mint Tobor one sheet for a song many many many
years ago), J. Fields Studio, and Jerry Ohlinger's Monroe ads, handwritten ads
where you have to call to get a description of not only what kind of condition
the poster was in but what it actually looked liked - try visualizing a
polish poster for Alien being described on the phone - it just can't be
done...this was the reason I never picked up the reissue 1950's realart
poster of "Bride of Frankenstein" for $30.00.  Oh how I miss my eyes going
bleary reading all the fine print ads, trying not to miss a thing.  Oh
how I miss my higher phone bills from actually calling and talking to real live
fellow collectors.  Ah...those were the days my friends, those were
the days...***This electronic mail transmission contains confidential and/or privilegedinformation intended only for the person(s) named.  Any use, distribution, copying or disclosure by another person is strictly prohibited.***
