[MOPO] Another killer deal from PayPal ("an eBay company")
Hey, when did this happen? PayPal has just put a LIMIT on the amount of money I can RECEIVE into my personal account during any 30 day period (the personal PayPal account is the one where they don't charge you any fees). This is something new. There was always a $500 limit on the amount I could withdraw from the personal account in one month, but never a limit on how much I could RECEIVE into the account before. In spite of the fact that I get spam from PayPal and eBay on a regular basis, I never saw a word about this new "inducement" to get everyone to, um, how you Americans say? "upgrade" to the so-called premier account (where I get charged 30 cents every time I receive anything plus pay a stiff 3% on whatever the amount is). so, once again eBay giveth and eBay taketh away... do you think if I wrote an email to that new guy at eBay... you know, the friendly one who sent me such a nice message the other day and said he would read all messages personally... that maybe he would get them to reverse this policy? [MOPO] OZ TO OZ is definitely a repro
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3875578921 That poster is definitely a commercial repro. The giveaway is the "Hollywood Theater" decorative paint and font that frames the glass (and it is glass). I don't remember the name of the company, but during the early 1970s, I purchased the same configuration at a K-Mart or Sears or Montgomery Ward type store, and it was for "Gone With the Wind." I think there were only three titles from which to choose, the third being "Casablanca." No King Kongs or stuff from other genres. I owned it for about 5 years, well before I got serious collecting originals. It was in direct sunlight (who knew?), the paint started flaking off the decorative glass and I junked it. You could argue it's 1970s vintage, but it's definitely not 1939 vintage. I think it cost me $14.98 or thereabouts. -koose. Re: [MOPO] Blue Dahlia gets the vapors?
And Anon (you really need to identify yourself a bit better... heck, even I use "JR"), What you are describing is hardly "unscrupulous" -- it is just the way business is done (in all areas of life). For instance, if a car dealer has a hot model, they will often tack on hundreds of extra bucks to the price, figuring if people are seeking that particular model some of them will be willing to pay a bit more for it -- and this is for a vehicle that carries on its window a manufacturer's sticker with a recommended "retail price". Gas stations in richer or busier parts of town (or at a highway on ramp) charge more for the exact same gas than some other stations due. One grocery store charges 20 cent more for a box of Cherrios than the one across the street does. So what? That's what happens in a free market economy. It's called caveat emptor and it means "buyer beware" (also known as do your homework and be a smart shopper and don't pay more than you need to). It is perfectly ethical (therefore "scrupulous") for anyone to ask whatever price they want for a poster -- and you are entitled to accept, reject or attempt to negotiate the price to some other level. No point in name-calling or pretending that this kind of thing only happens on MOPO where the "dealers all stick together". There is no such thing as a fixed price for any collectible -- only reports of past sales and auctions to serve as rough guidelines. A dealer's printed price list is only good until he decides to change it (unless it is in a printed ad which is publicly distributed, at which point it become an contractual offer to sell at that price). Sure, some sellers operate much more "fairly and friendlier" than others, but unless they are engaging in some kind of fraud like trying to sell you one thing while telling you it is another, using words like "unscrupulous" to describe them is a bit much. Note that I am NOT a dealer and have posted plenty of criticisms to this list in the past about some of the dealer and auction activity I've seen that I thought needed questioning -- but getting all hot and bothered just because someone quotes you a retail price that is higher than you want to pay... c'mon... -- JR - Original Message - From: And Anonymous To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Friday, February 18, 2005 12:42 Subject: Re: [MOPO] Blue Dahlia wanted zeevi reported the other day that a dealer last week (and i will not expose his identity) offered to sell me 2 half sheets of a title that appeared on my want list. we exchanged a few emails. after 3-4 emails, he quoted me a price for each. ironically, a fellow collector emailed me his current sale list. his offer to me was about 50-75 higher than his printed list. (these are posters that sell for just about 200 each). did he inflate his prices because he thought i was an ignorant collector? Re: [MOPO] The fine art of poster pricing AND a WTB
I would agree with JR here.(see his quote at bottom) First, MOPO is always a good place to start for buying and selling. In regards to poster pricing, especially on Ebay, the myriad of categories makes it possible to find an item listed in a bad place, or a listing by someone who doesn't normally deal in posters listing a highly sought after poster at a bargain price. As an example, I've been collecting the true life adventure series of posters that Disney released in the 50's. I just got a 1949 seal island one sheet I've been keeping an eye out for, for $27. (I think it was in a category named paper) 10 years ago this would have brought $200 fairly easy. It was an auction by those ISOLDIT people who auction off stuff for others. They were happy and I was happy. They listed it for $19. I'm still looking for Bear Country.. and Prowlers of the Everglades... also posters from the Disney People and Places series from the '50's. [MOPO] The fine art of poster pricing (make me an offer I can't refuse)
Yeah, except that the TOUCH OF EVIL half sheet was bought on eBay, where in theory the marketplace sets the price instead of the seller, so in theory this seller's ignorance of the true value of the poster should not have mattered (right...). But apparently that particular week there wasn't anyone checking out movie posters on eBay who wanted to pay more than $320 for this one. Of course, that doesn't mean it isn't "worth more" -- we all know that simply depends on who happens to be looking that week and how many people happen to want it at that moment -- and that dynamic can apply to both auction and direct dealer sales. There's no question that getting the TOUCH half sheet for $320 is a stroke of pure luck. Heck, one sold on MoviePosterBid.com back in April of last year for $465. But here you had one of those dream situations where the seller was not primarily a poster dealer -- not someone with a strong interest in movie posters. If he had been, there's no way he would have let it go for that. So, sometimes a buyer gets lucky. I've pointed out before that in many cases the "retail" dealer price is being set by a dealer who is ALSO A COLLECTOR and what that dealer is saying with the high retail price is, essentially, "Look, I don't care what this poster might possibly go for on eBay in any given week. I only have one and I love it and I ain't lettin' it go for anything less than this price -- otherwise I'll just keep it and enjoy it in my own collection." You can't fault anyone for that logic -- most of the time it isn't so much greed as it is desire to hold on to something they personally value a lot unless someone makes them an offer they can't refuse. And if you want a particular poster bad enough and can't find it anywhere else then you just have to pay another collector-dealer enough to get them to part with their own precious copy. That's just life in Collectibles City. Even so, I do think the online auctions have added an interesting dynamic to the pricing of ALL collectibles. Prior to online auctions, the dealers set the prices and there was certainly a lot of agreement (informal and otherwise) that a lawyer would call "price fixing" between them. That's human nature, I'm not condemning it, but let's not pretend it didn't happen. As the online auctions took off over the past 8 years, something of a "balance" was added to the dealer pricing network. Sure, sometimes an item goes for super-cheap at auction... but other times (as we've seen with Bruce's auctions) it can end up in a bidding war and go for much more than the quoted "retail price" some other dealers might have it listed for. What the online auctions do is provide very loose guidelines as to what people are actually willing to pay for an item at the time the auction closes. Such prices are obviously not set in stone, but they certainly help provide a wider range of pricing and a better gauge of the market than either buyers or sellers used to have in the, um, "good old days." At this point I think there's a nice balance between auctions and retail direct dealer sales. There will continue to be vagaries between them -- sometimes large variations -- but overall I think the collectibles marketplace is much healthier for the long term in areas such as movie poster collecting than ever before. -- JR - Original Message - From: lobby card invasion To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Friday, February 18, 2005 12:24 Subject: Re: [MOPO] Blue Dahlia wanted And AnonymousYou said :"prices tend to be ridiculously inflated when you find them through MOPO".I'm curious to know your theory of why you think that is so?Regarding the Touch of Evil half sheet you bought from that nice gentleman, you said that movie posters was "not his field". Re: [MOPO] Blue Dahlia wanted
zeev i reported the other day that a dealer last week (and i will not expose his identity) offered to sell me 2 half sheets of a title that appeared on my want list. we exchanged a few emails. after 3-4 emails, he quoted me a price for each. ironically, a fellow collector emailed me his current sale list. his offer to me was about 50-75 higher than his printed list. (these are posters that sell for just about 200 each). did he inflate his prices because he thought i was an ignorant collector?JUST ONE EXAMPLE... i have so many more.unscrupulous dealers on MOPO think they hit the lottery when the see a collector wanting a poster. i find it amazing how dealers stick together on ebay! Re: [MOPO] Blue Dahlia wanted
And Anonymous You said : "prices tend to be ridiculously inflated when you find them through MOPO". I'm curious to know your theory of why you think that is so? Regarding the Touch of Evil half sheet you bought from that nice gentleman, you said that movie posters was "not his field". Maybe he just did'nt know the real market value of that piece? This is not to say that you did something wrong, but on the other hand neither do dealers when they ask for market price, even if it is higher than what you paid for it. Re: [MOPO] Blue Dahlia wanted
John - I don't believe that there is a reissue of THE BLUE DAHLIA. I don't recall ever seeing a U.S. reissue. There was a 1945 reissue of THIS GUN FOR HIRE, but I don't remember THE BLUE DAHLIA ever being reissued. Best, Kirby McDaniel MovieArt Original Film Posters P.O. [MOPO] Nude: Mutiny on the Bounty?
Hi Gang, Question about Marlon Brando and the Bounty film: >From a Quote by Tiron Porter - ex-Bass player for Doobie Brothers and admitted cinephile. ""The first videotape I ever saw was this giant Betamax machine at Jeff Baxters house," said Porter, referencing the infamous Doobie/Steely Dan guitarist everyone knew as "Skunk." "He had Marlon Brandos own cut of Mutiny on the Bounty, in which all the women were naked. Brando took these long soliloquies with all these women in the background. I have no idea where it came from or what ever happened to it."" Does anyone HAVE this copy of Bounty? I'd like to see it.
