Subject: [MOPO] Questionable Linen Backing

Yesterday I began a process of trying to reverse the linen backing on two
posters that were purchased on Ebay already backed. The posters, one
insert
and one half sheet, came to me from separate clients who had purchased
them
off Ebay. Different posters, different sellers, different buyers. Both
client complained about the quality of restoration and the linen backing
did
not seem "right' . They wanted to reverse the process and start all over
again. I had recalled within the past 10 months or so there seemed to be
a
swarm of linenbacked posters offered on Ebay. Since restoring works on
paper is my studio speciality I thought it was a little weird that posters
like The Rose Tattoo and The Conqueror would appear on Ebay already linen
backed and at low opening bids.
I was concerned because I had no idea if the posters had been originally
backed with conservation methods, what adhesive used, etc. Fortunately
the
posters did survive the submerging process and did lift but I was
disappointed at the amateurish restoration and lack of archival
procedures.
The posters were laid down on some kind of white paper and then laid down
on
untreated blank canvas. This is what had caused the bubbling and uneven
surface. The reversal made clear badly patched rips, obvious pinholes,
and
missing paper, partially disguised by indifferent restoration. It
appears
the posters, starting out with questionable condition issues, had been put
through a gin mill face lift to look pretty on Ebay.
My clients are exceedingly disappointed and feel like they have been
gypped.
They understood only when I explained the proper archival process and
conservative restoration techniques. So it is buyer beware and another
consideration for buying off Ebay.

[MOPO] Fw: [MOPO] Vintage 1932 Frankenstein Poster on Ebay

2005-05-09 Thread Todd Feiertag
This poster is a made up reproduction from the 60's or most likely 70's. I
have one and have seen many others. Notice that the Frankenstein lettering
at the top almost looks just like the Frankenstein lettering in Mel Brooks
Young Frankenstein? The posters' style looks 60's or 70's, definitely not
30's. The image is not Karloff from the original Frankenstein.

Re: [MOPO] 1932 Frankie- on second thought

2005-05-09 Thread Richard Halegua Comic Art
NONO.. it is indeed an image from Frankenstein
if it was from son of frank, karloff had added a little weight and the
monster would have scars from the fire at the end of frankenstein.
I think it's an image from the scene when the monster is with the little
girl, but it is from teh first film without a doubt

[MOPO] Cost of movie ticket in 1932

2005-05-09 Thread Richard Halegua Comic Art
some theatres cost a lot more than your local movie house in many cities..
for instance it was .75 or $1 to see films at Radio City in NYC as it was a
"premiere" movie house where also many films premiered, like King Kong...
so no 50 cents isn't a lot.. depending on where you were

Re: [MOPO] Fwd: MOPO regarding finding NEMO reprints on ebay

2005-05-09 Thread Planetbiz
Martin,
Thanks for taking the time and effort to both question this dealer and
to post your information to MOPO. In it unfortunate that nobody is willing
to name the questionable dealers. I've been trying to purchase some newer
posters in recent weeks/months and about the only advice that I get is to
buy from one or two dealers who happen to be MOPO, MPT, or Style-B members
(depending upon where you are posting/reading). There have to be other
legitimate dealers and of course a host of problem dealers out there.

The problem dealers may in fact have lots of legitimate items but as
soon as they knowingly offer questionable items, they are off limits for me.
I know that there have been threats of lawsuits in the past, but we have to
find a way to weed out the dealers that can be trusted from those who can't.
It probably would be acceptable to have a MOPO*Approved tag if it could be
actually worth something. The attempts in the past including LAMP's current
attempt seem to only reward advertisers, friends, colleagues, etc.

I will be posting an experience of mine shortly (as soon as I
receive a refund) that I've had recently with an ebay dealer. I hope to
help others who might consider purchasing from this person.

Does anybody have an idea about how to generate a true *Approved
list of dealers? Does anyone else care?

Thanks again,
Bill

Subject: [MOPO] Fwd: MOPO regarding finding NEMO reprints on ebay

I had a conversation with Believe in Movies regarding their "finding Nemo
posters" listed on ebay which are clearly reprints. Below is the
information
from Dan's "movieposterauthentication.com" site. Thanks to Dan for making
this
information available and publicand below that, see my email
exchanges
with "believe in movies" about his 27" x 40" , "approximately" description,
and the SONIS Company logo. His auction pictures clearly show the reprint
company's logo. I asked him to measure it and let me know what the actual
not
approximate size is. Of course he didn't, and considered me hostile... and
uniformed. Martin

*from Dan's site*
Finding Nemo
Finding Nemo was released in North America theatrically on 3,374 screens May
30 2003.The film had the largest opening weekend for any animated film upon
its US release (30 May 2003).Reprints measure 26 3/4 x 38 1/2.You will find
a
company logo on one of the fish in the lower left side which I believe to be
the
logo for (Sonis) the company that reprints movie posters. One can be found on
the Matrix poster reprint as well.

  Finding Nemo
The fish is clean with no logo on it.Originals measure 26 15/16 x 39
15/16.There were s/s and d/s originals printed.There seems to be only s/s
reprints.

I get different sizes of the same posters in all the time, many times in the
same shipment. That is why I state the sizes as "approx".

I'm not going to argue with you. I DO know my product. I am one of only
37
licenced movie poster distributors for the studios across the US. I have
been licenced for 17 years and distribute to the theaters in PA, NY, NJ, DE
and
MD for all the movie studios, including Buena Vista (Pixar, Disney,
Touchstone,
etc). I'm not sure where your hostility is coming from. There is no
"reprint logo" on the poster. I don't know what it is you think you are
seeing.

Hi Martin,
I fully agree on what you had to say about this
subject. One thing that bothers me, and correct
me if I'm wrong, being in the exhibition business
end of things we get most of our advertising material,
including one sheets, from Technicolor these days.
How is this person calling himself a distributor for
all the studios?
