Re: [MOPO] newspaper article on movie posters

2006-11-02 Thread allen day
Howdy y'all,

Perusing through the daily rag (newspaper) in this
area ... The Charlotte Observer (disturber) has the
best articles that can be picked off the wire /
internet.

There was a small article about types of posters ...
travel, foreign, advertising, and movie posters.

One of the sources listed where an interested party
could find additional info:

www.walterfilm.com

Congrats ... Walter

[MOPO] eBay Second Chance Offers

2006-11-02 Thread Richard Halegua Comic Art
there has been a mild discussion about the phony Second Chance
Offers from ebay thieves.

I myself was offered a Blue Dahlia 1/2 sheet that I was underbidder
on 3 weeks ago sold by tecup

Bruce I have a little discussion.. I thought I would post my
response for the group.

Rich,

It is absolutely amazing that eBay does not take this
seriously. People are abandoning their site left and right.

Thanks,

Bruce

I think the reasons for eBay are very simple..

do you remember the lawsuit years ago about the Ford Pinto where Ford
had been sued by the parents of a teen killed when his Pinto was
rear-ended a screw that held the bumper in place pierced the gas
tank, igniting the car and killing him(which had happened to scores
of Pinto owners) ??

During that lawsuit do you remember the infamous internal memo that
was written in the legal division that quantified this:

1) If Ford were to recall fix all Pintos, and redesign future
production so the screw was placed differently to prevent the fire
would cost Ford $280 million

2) but to just pay the lawsuits of those killed in the explosion or
fire would only cost Ford $108 million, resulting in a $183 million
savings to Ford

We all know the finding of that memo by the plaintiff's lawyers
resulted in a huge award that outstripped the $183 million saved by
Ford, but it was the first time that the public became aware of
corporate actuarial accounting measuring profits against human life.

The situation with eBay is much the same..

1) how much will it cost to fix the problem

2) how much will it cost us to reimburse the complainers

Ebay has actually forgotten why people really came to their site in
the beginning: that it was the easiest, cheapest most rewarding way
to sell without leaving your home or office.

it has become the opposite. It really isn't that easy to sell on eBay
sometimes anymore. Also, if you factor in crookery, non-payers etc..
the time to pack ship (as opposed to when we did most of our
business at conventions in person) and the hampering of buying
collections in an era when collectors can now sell their own stuff,
and the hugely increased cost of selling on eBay.. The equation has
shifted away from ebay.

eBay was once a very FUN place for all. Easy, cheap, fun.. that is
what worked for them, in their favor.

Now it is difficult, expensive, time consuming, dishonest, capricious
and there is little or no fun.

But it is their own fault. eBay tried to hire people like David
Alexander to help them understand the collector mentality and the
seller mentality. But we both know in dealing with corporate bean
counters (generally speaking), they really don't understand us and so
they continue to make us feel dis-enfrancised.

that's why they think like Ford did back in the 1970's

best
