[MOPO] Elizabeth Taylor - R.I.P.

2011-03-23 Thread Steve
Although not unexpected, it hurts greatly to learn of Elizabeth Taylor's
passing.  She was my first movie star crush and remained one of my four
favorite
actresses of all time for the past 50 years.

LOS ANGELES – Screen legend Elizabeth Taylor has died in Los Angeles. She was
79.
Publicist Sally Morrison says the actress died Wednesday morning at
Cedars-Sinai
Medical Center from congestive heart failure. Morrison says her children were
at
her side.
She'd been hospitalized for about six weeks.

[MOPO] Elizabeth Taylor - IMDb

2011-03-23 Thread Kirby McDaniel
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm072/

MSNBC has reported that the woman that film writer Richard Schickel has called
The Last Movie Star, has died.

Few in the industry are genuine icons. She is. She was not only one of the
very best
film actresses, but a very successful businesswoman who probably made more money
off the screen than on. She is also a real heroine in the fight against AIDS.
She spoke
up against AIDS when AIDS was the gay disease. She put her money and time where
her mouth was in helping to form AMFAR with Mathilde Krim.

I am truly saddened as we shall not see her again.

2011-03-23 Thread Susan Heim

Just heard the news as I drove to the office. What a sad day. She was one of my
favorite actresses and her work in the fight against AIDS was incredible,
especially in the early days when it wasn't popular to be associated with. She
appeared in person at many a benefit here in Los Angeles and gave so much of
herself, both in time and money. She was a class act in my book and a tough
broad!!

One of the very few movie stars for whom the over-used words "icon" and

[MOPO] TAYLOR-BURTON

2011-03-23 Thread Kirby McDaniel
Iconic is a word thrown around a lot but few people really are.
At the height of her screen power (1955-1970) Elizabeth Taylor
was the most famous film actress in the world. And one of the best
also. I think she knew more about screen acting than most actors
ever will. When you have the native intelligence that she did and you've been
doing it
since you were a child, you just get good at it. She was, in my book,
a great champion, like Muhammad Ali or Franklin Roosevelt or Picasso.

Several good books
have been written about her, but the most recent, FURIOUS LOVE.
really does give an idea of her life at the apogee of her career. I
recommend it.

Thanks, everyone, for your responses. Looks like this thing IS on. Though
lately I have found posting to MoPo a little hit-and-miss.

Several times in the last few weeks I've sent emails to MoPo that haven't
been posted to the list, including one I just sent about Elizabeth Taylor.

Has this happened to anyone else? Also, can any of you even see THIS email?

  Thanks for any help.

hey richard
as i understand it, mexican lobby cards are incredibly rare and almost
impossible to get hold of.
their prices are a carefully guarded secret which are believed to be
manipulated and protected by a powerful cartel headed by warren buffett.
should the cartel ever manage to sell a mexican lobby card, this might help
establish how much you would have to pay for your elizabeth taylor mexican
lobby card, but until then it's difficult to say.
but my guess would be around the 15 cents mark.

[MOPO] “Is Elizabeth Taylor fat?” “Her favorite food is seconds.”---Joan Rivers

2011-03-23 Thread rodxmorgan
Elizabeth Taylor looks like two small boys fighting underneath a thick blanket.

Elizabeth Taylor's so fat, she puts mayonnaise on aspirin.
Elizabeth Taylor has more chins than the Chinese telephone directory.
I took Elizabeth Taylor to McDonald's and she got stuck in the arches. I had to
butter her thighs to get her out. I stood in front of her with a Twinkie and
said, 'Come and GET IT.'
I took Elizabeth Taylor to Sea World. It was so embarrassing. Shamu the Whale

Elizabeth Taylor pierced her ears and gravy ran out.

The Posters are original, and come from a Regional Film
Archive in Mexico City.

They were designed in Hollywood and printed in Mexico.

Each Poster contains the same design elements found on
Posters from the US.

They contain both stills from the Film and also design
elements from the One Sheet Poster.

The typography, photos, artwork, stars names, credits,
drawings, scenes, emotional impact,

appeal, and intrinsic value are
virtually the same as Posters from Hollywood
or any other

international Metropolis where the film had been shown.

However, the layout will be much flashier, more graphically
intensive, or even more lurid.

The size is appx. 13" x 17"---over 40% larger than
a standard Lobby Card.

As such, each Poster is a cross between a Jumbo Lobby Card,
Title Card, and a One Sheet Poster.

The Posters were printed on either heavy Cardboard Stock,
thick fine Linen Paper, or

sturdy Poster Stock.

Overall very good condition, altho there will be occasional
tears, pinholes, stains, etc.

There are eight different variations for each poster---containing
different stills from the film.

Some dupes.

[MOPO] Liz Taylor's Passing - Interesting note

2011-03-23 Thread Susan Heim

I was just reading that is was March 22, 1958 that Liz's husband, Mike Todd was
killed on his plane "Lucky Liz". She was suppose to take that flight with him,
but had a bad cold and he convinced her to stay home. So, 53 years and 1 day
lateramazing.

As for the "mexican lobby card king", I'm just wondering why it took him so
long to post. It's been about 8 hours since the news broke. Must be
slipping...

[MOPO] Groucho & Yo / fantomas38000 seller warning

2011-03-23 Thread Neil Jaworski
hallo MOPOers
as much as i hate to complain about a seller, especially one with generally
excellent feedback, i've had a really lousy experience with a spanish dealer
(groucho & yo / fantomas 38000 on ebay / allcollection).
i bought a poster that was condition rated 4/5 and which was described as
having some 'yellowing of the foldlines' only to receive it and find that this
yellowing was due to thick black mould (three inches wide and over a foot
long!) that bled from the back through to the front, giving that part of the
poster a rather severe, mottled, yellow patina.
i double-checked and the poster image on the auction website was clearly not
the same as the poster i received; the copy i received had manual stamps in
four corners that did not appear on the auction photo.  the old bait & switch!
i pointed out that the poster i received was not as described and was not even
the same poster that i had bid on, but the seller insisted it was the same
poster.
i offered to return the item (at great expense, as global priority to Spain is
£35), but rather than have me return it, the seller wanted to know if we could
find a solution that would be acceptable to me.
so i suggested that he might offer me 20% off the price of poster (about 20
euros) or a credit note of 30 euros towards another poster of similar value.
NB the seller had been offering 20% off of all his fixed-price items throughout
january and february.
the seller point-blank refused to entertain this and said he would give me a
10% off future orders, which i think is laughable.
the tone of his emails i found very condescending and rude and i have told him
i will keep the poster but that he has lost my custom.  i bought a quite
expensive poster from this guy in september and two more since, but clearly
he's thriving in this recession and can afford to lose customers.
so beware of buying from groucho y yo / fantomas 38000 on the basis of their
wildly inaccurate condition ratings and the fact that the photos of items that
you bid on may not be the item you receive.
cheers
neil

Re: [MOPO] Groucho & Yo / fantomas38000 seller warning

2011-03-23 Thread Phil Edwards
First I have ever heard of anything like this with these guys.
As there is visual evedience (the stamps) that they are different pieces, then
I don't understand why a
refund is not the simple answer.

  I agree,
I have bought many posters from them, and never a problem. Always seemed very
nice and professional.
  Sorry yours was bad.

  Neil
Well thats a shame because those are great bunch of fellows in Spain and they
run a nice full tilt auction once or twice a year. You know even the best
sellers have on occasion farted up wind making for that occasional stinky
transaction. Maybe after a nice siesta they will realize their

Elizabeth Taylor looks like two small boys fighting underneath a thick blanket.
- - - Mr. Blackwell

Every minute this broad spends outside of bed is a waste of time.
- - - Michael Todd

Elizabeth Taylor's so fat, she puts mayonnaise on aspirin.

Elizabeth Taylor has more chins than the Chinese telephone directory.

I took Elizabeth Taylor to McDonald's and she got stuck in the arches. I had to
butter her thighs to get her out. I stood in front of her with a Twinkie and
said, 'Come and GET IT.'

I took Elizabeth Taylor to Sea World. It was so embarrassing. Shamu the Whale
jumps out of the water; she asks 'Does he come with fries?'

Mosquitoes see Elizabeth Taylor and scream, 'Buffet!'

Elizabeth Taylor pierced her ears and gravy ran out.

The Posters are original, and come from a Regional Film Archive in Mexico City.
They were designed in Hollywood and printed in Mexico.
Each Poster contains the same design elements found on Posters from the US.
They contain both stills from the Film and also design elements from the One
Sheet Poster.

The typography, photos, artwork, stars names, credits, drawings, scenes,
emotional impact,

appeal, and intrinsic value are virtually the same as Posters from Hollywood or
any other

international Metropolis where the film had been shown.

However, the layout will be much flashier, more graphically intensive, or even
more lurid.
The size is appx. 13" x 17"---over 40% larger than a standard Lobby Card.
As such, each Poster is a cross between a Jumbo Lobby Card, Title Card, and a
One Sheet Poster.
The Posters were printed on either heavy Cardboard Stock, thick fine Linen
Paper, or

sturdy Poster Stock.

Overall very good condition, altho there will be occasional tears, pinholes,
stains, etc.
There are eight different variations for each poster---containing different
stills from the film.
Some dupes.

[MOPO] My favorite Elizabeth Taylor photo, age 23.

2011-03-23 Thread David Kusumoto

As will become obvious below - this image by Frank Worth on the set of "Giant"
in 1955 - has long been my favorite Elizabeth Taylor photo of all time. It's a
candid, not a publicity photo, but captures a whole lot about what Taylor's
appeal was all about. Right click and save this baby on your computer, guys
(and girls)... -d.
