Lost Films

Lost Films is a German initiative that asks visitors to check out and identify
the 3,500 “lost” films in its archives.
Some are by great directors. (Amazingly, five of Ernst Lubitsch’s movies make
the list.) Some are so obscure, we can’t imagine that they’ll ever be ID’d.
Andsome sound so wonderful, we very much hope they’ll be recovered. Take, for
instance, Unidentified Film No. 254—a two-reeler in which “Snooky the monkey
[actually, a chimp—ed.] gets married at the ‘Jungle Mission,’ while other
monkeys [also chimps] play pool, go to the ‘Monkavich & Co. Pawn Shop,’ use the
‘Lion Taxi’ service, and a nurse loses track of her baby while falling for a
member of the ‘Jungle Chief Fire Dept.’” Visiting film buffs can (and should)
submit clips, stills, documents, posters, or reviews that might have fallen
into their hands. But if you don’t have (or know the first thing about) the
relevant materials, don’t worry: This Internet portal is still a fascinating
place to poke around in.

the Debbie Reynolds sale is fascinating for what it doesn't include.
the singular tragedy in the conservation of movie history is Reynolds being
willing but unable to save the destruction of the MGM backlot by corporate
raider Kirk Kerkorian. despite the numbers making sense.

The other tragedy is that an affluent Hollywood community couldn't
muster up enough revenue to support a Hollywood museum to preserve their
own cultural history. I find it mind-boggling that some part of
Hollywood and Vine which was riddled with cheap wig stores, a prono
theater and tacky t-shirt shops before they were condemned couldn't be
carved out for a Hollywood costume museum right across from the
monstrous Kodak center. FRANC

Re: [MOPO] FS: selling June 2011 Profile in History Catalogue & other posters/catalogues

2011-06-02 Thread Jeff Potokar
I also find it fascinating (and disappointing) that Debbie Reynolds
NEVER was able to find solid investors, especially in the Hollywood
community, to help keep this amazing collection under one roof, in a
museum-like setting. It has to be devastating, in a sense, for her,
that, after the decades of being the rescuer, gatherer and caretaker
of these pieces of Hollywood history (and with a good number being
iconic), the collection is going to be auctioned and sold, piecemeal.

Once in the hands of private collectors, some of these props or
costumes may not see the light of day or be in the public eye, for
years, if not decades.

I know many other pieces have been auctioned in the past. It is more
the idea that she is/was the sole owner of all of these Hollywood
treasures.

2011-06-02 Thread Jeff Potokar

I agree with you 100% Franc.

While Hollywood has gotten better in recent years and cleaned itself
up, when i walk there and see the (still) empty real estate that
could have been (be) used for something like this, it really breaks
my heart.

Grauman's Chinese Theatre sold recently, too, to an individual who
may opt to open it to conventions, and the like. I am just hoping
that, because if it's landmark status, he is NOT ever able to alter
the structure's interior or exterior. That, too, would be a tragedy.

Or are they sent to you gratis?

Or are they sent to you gratis?

I'm aware that people are sent catalogs for free, based on their past

post, Michael.

Not sure why this query has you answering for him or causing you to

Take a breath and relax. lol

Re: [MOPO] FS: selling June 2011 Profile in History Catalogue & other posters/catalogues

2011-06-02 Thread Irvin J. Gelb
In my humble opinion, the majority of the current public is not interested
in old Hollywood costumes or props. That's one of the main reasons why
Debbie has not been able to consummate a deal for a museum. In another life
I was an executive at an entertainment company and had dealings with Debbie
and her son about financing a museum in Hollywood. Personally, I would love
to see one, in addition to the well done Hollywood Museum in the old Max
Factor building, but they are also having trouble bringing in enough
visitors to make a profitable business out of it. Therefore, I'm afraid the
current market dictates that die hard fans like us become the proud owners
of these collectibles without there being one great museum to display them.

Re: [MOPO] FS: selling June 2011 Profile in History Catalogue & other posters/catalogues

2011-06-02 Thread Alan Adler
What we may have been witnessing these past 10-15 years is the rise of the
individual museum / archive -
The person that is the keenest on a particular type of thing who spends and
gets the best collection of it and goes to the trouble to organize -
And display - The internet being the venue for the new age of museums - Virtual
Museum Row if you like.
Executive Studio mentality actually depends on the private sector to care for
certain things - like silent film - books (remember those) and history, that it
has no budget to pursue.

The future is the private archive - your goodies up on line for all to see -
annotated by the owner.

Irv.. the mistake that corporations make in this case is that they
could sponsor the museum, lose money or whatever & get both
promotional value & good karma. seeing as they aren't interested in
the Karma, and too many corporations are run by people too young to
be familiar with the material, it's a dead end..
