[MOPO] FA: 426 scripts, exhibitor magazines, movie magazines, German programs, hardcover books, pressbooks, sheet music, and bulk lots end very soon; lots of INCREDIBLE bargains!
Three times *EVERY *week we auction hundreds of items that sell for low, low prices (we actually sell lots and lots of items for $1 and $2, and around half of all that we auction goes for $14 and under (and those are pretty evenly spread between $1 and $14), and our leading 'competitor *NEVER*auctions even *ONE *item for less than *FIFTEEN DOLLARS*, due to their *outrageous* $14 minimum buyers premium). But Sunday's *426** *scripts, exhibitor magazines, movie magazines, German programs, hardcover books, pressbooks, sheet music, and bulk lots, closing *THIS AFTERNOON* (not at night, like our Tuesday and Thursday auctions), on *September 4th*, represent *REALLY* incredible values, and that includes a lot of *really good* items, and yet many of these are currently languishing at low, low, prices! With just *9 *hours to go, these *426** *scripts, exhibitor magazines, movie magazines, German programs, hardcover books, pressbooks, sheet music, and bulk lots include a *WACKY *32 that have no bid at all, a* CRAZY *125 that are $1 each or have no bid, a *not-to-be-believed* 174 that are still $3 each and under. and a *MOUNT EVEREST-LIKE* 248 that are still $6 each and under! *THAT'S RIGHT, NEARLY 60% OF THESE ITEMS ** ARE $6 EACH OR UNDER (and over 40% are $4 each or under!), AND THAT INCLUDES A LOT OF GOOD ITEMS THAT MOST DEALERS WOULD ASK $10, $20 OR MORE FOR!* *These Sunday auctions are among our best regular Sunday auctions ever*, with lots of better items on each type, plus some great poster bulk lots! Important: We have recently added a *GREAT* collection of movie-related hardcover books to our regular Sunday lineup, and they include lots of really cool and really rare books that hardly ever come up for sale! Also note that for the next two Sundays we won't have have regular Sunday items, first because of a special auction of unfolded one-sheets, and then because of the final section of our Fall Mini/Major auction, so really look over the current Sunday items closely, because these regular Sunday items won't be back for three weeks! *Some may say they can't afford to spend money on frivolous items like these right now, but I say you can't afford NOT to, both because many prices are lower than you could possibly imagine, and this opportunity might not pass this way again anytime soon, and also because THESE paper items seem far more likely to hold their value than our paper MONEY which erodes in value with each passing week!** * Here is a list of the current top 40 items: 4p002 LOT OF 220 FOLDED ONE-SHEETS '40-94 Saturday Night Fever, Once Upon a Time in America +more! 4p010 LOT OF 50 SIGNED COLOR AND BLACK WHITE ORIGINAL AND REPRO STILLS '40 Janet Leigh more! 4p001 LOT OF 253 FOLDED ONE-SHEETS '58-89 Ladies Gentlemen The Rolling Stones, Airplane more! 4p003 LOT OF 110 FOLDED ONE-SHEETS '50 - '02 Viva Knievel, Midnight Express, 100 Rifles more! 4p049 MOVING PICTURE WORLD exhibitor magazine June 2, 1917 Fairbanks, Pickford, Theda Bara! 4p004 LOT OF 85 FOLDED ONE-SHEETS '51-93 Every Which Way But Loose many more! 4p045 MOVING PICTURE WORLD exhibitor magazine Aug 15, 1914 Uncle Tom's Cabin, Patchwork Girl of Oz 4p009 LOT OF 98 TITLE CARDS AND LOBBY CARDS '39 - '79 Call Me Bwana, Tall Story many more! 4p008 LOT OF 100 TITLE CARDS AND LOBBY CARDS '38 - '78 Maryjane, Strange Bedfellows more! 4p050 MOVING PICTURE WORLD exhibitor magazine Jun 8, 1918 Theda Bara, Mutt Jeff, Burton Rice art! 4p051 MOVING PICTURE WORLD exhibitor magazine July 13 1918 Charlie Chaplin, Tarzan theater display 4p080 PICTURE PLAY magazine August 1930 wonderful full-length art of pretty Claudette Colbert! 4p056 MOVING PICTURE WEEKLY exhibitor magazine Jan 18, 1919 best lobby display, Chaplin cartoon! 4p031 LOT OF 38 FORMERLY FOLDED FRENCH POSTERS '79-01 Apocalypse Now Redux, Groundhog Day more! 4p023 LOT OF 6 WESTERN COMIC BOOKS '49 - '60 Davy Crockett, Texas Rangers, Western Hero more! 4p071 SCREENLAND magazine January 1927 art of pretty Vilma Banky by Jay Weaver, Wings article! 4p048 MOVING PICTURE WORLD exhibitor magazine April 14, 1917 Arbuckle, Fairbanks, Harold Lloyd! 4p162 LOBBY CARDS: THE CLASSIC COMEDIES 1st edition hardcover book '88 the Michael Hawks collection! 4p043 MOVING PICTURE WORLD exhibitor magazine July 19, 1913 earliest The Pit and the Pendulum! 4p044 MOVING PICTURE WORLD exhibitor magazine October 25, 1913 early Carl Laemmle, 1sheet shown! 4p176 TALES OF TERROR: THE EC COMPANION hardcover book '00 by Fred Von Bernewitz Grant Geissman! 4p046 MOVING PICTURE WORLD exhibitor magazine May 22, 1915 youngest Ethel Barrymore, Viola Dana! 4p196 LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER first draft script September 14, 1961, screenplay by Alec Coppel! 4p085 PICTURE PLAY magazine February 1931 wonderful art portrait of Kay Francis by Modest Stein! 4p047 MOVING PICTURE WORLD exhibitor magazine March 4, 1916 theater fronts, Krazy Kat, Pickford 4p036 LOT OF 35 UNFOLDED AND FORMERLY FOLDED ONE-SHEETS '70-98 Interview with the
[MOPO] DO you have movie paper to sell? Legendary collector/dealer Marty Davis gives his opinion of the best place to do so!
*Our latest ad features a single testimonial from legendary longtime collector/dealer Marty Davis!* We at eMoviePoster.com have had over 800 collectors and dealers consign to our auctions, far more than any other movie poster auction house. Yet we do next-to-no paid advertising to find those consignors, because every month brings lots of new consignors who were referred to us, often by one of our present consignors. Some of our consignors only find us *AFTER* they have consigned elsewhere, and often they tell us long sad stories of their experiences consigning elsewhere, and we reassure them that they will have a completely different experience consigning to us, and we encourage them to start with a small consignment, because we *KNOW* that after they have consigned once, they are likely to keep consigning until they have nothing left they want to sell! We thought we would ask our present consignors to tell us how they felt about consigning to us, and we received so many great replies that we will be running not one, but a series of ads with those responses! We ran our first one a month ago with responses from four consignors. Go here to view the second ad, a testimonial from legendary longtime collector/dealer Marty Davis (who has run live auctions himself, and who has been a major seller on the eBay site, and who has collected in a wide range of areas, but particularly on Charlie Chaplin and silent comedians, for well over 40 years!): * http://www.emovieposter.com/unused/20110829_ad_mcw_marty_davis_ad.jpg * *If YOU have been on the fence about consigning to us, read the above and see if it doesn't make sense for you to send us a package so you can see why just about EVERY dealer (and hundreds of collectors) have been consigning to us (many of them for years, some for 20 years, as Marty Davis has)!* Bruce Hershenson and the other 25 members of the eMoviePoster.com team P.O. Hi All - Joe Hernandez passed away last evening. I certainly know there are very mixed feelings about him, but felt it was worth reporting. Also, it is hard to believe, but I know some had given him work in the past years. I can not imagine that there had been anything in this past year, but if there are any open issues, contact me, and I will do my best to help sort it out for you. Re: [MOPO] Joe
I didn't know Joe, but I do know his work which was exceptional and though Joe should be excoriated for his behavior which has previously been noted, he did leave a lasting legacy of top-notch restorers that he trained like John Davis and unfortunately Jaime as well. (maybe he trained Jaime too well). I can only wonder how much more fantastic work Joe could have done had he not gone to the Dark Side At 10:59 AM 9/4/2011, channinglylethomson wrote: Diane -- I'm sorry to hear of his passing. Re: [MOPO] Joe
Joe Hernandez did exceptional restoration work. He had a knack for coming up with solutions to seemingly intractable problems, resulting in some restorations of important posters. Some of these results were almost unbelievable. Of course, any restorer will tell you that it is one thing to see the work of a restorer fresh of the press so to speak, and another thing to see a restoration twenty years after the fact. He was always a character; unfortunately it came to be that you could spell that with a capital C. He did some bad things, and he paid a price for doing them. May he rest in peace. Any man's death diminishes me. Or something like that. We've all got it comin'. Thanks, Diane, for posting this to MOPO. Re: [MOPO] Joe
Joe was 100% his own worst enemy. He could have been a gigantic success, and for all those he hurt, he hurt himself far more. One day Jose Carpio (also gone) showed me a Devil With Woman one-sheet that had a huge hole at the top crossfold and it fell right in Dietrich's eye, and it ruined the poster. Jose gave it to Joe, and a month later I saw the finished product, and even knowing what had been done I found it hard to believe it was the same poster! I guarantee there are 100 more posters like it floating in the hobby, and maybe some of the buyers know what was done, but some surely don't. I worked with every restorer, and Joe in his prime was better than anyone overall. The only one who was better in any area was Igor Edelman (also gone), who was a better paint restorer. I know a few people had Joe do everything but the paint restoration, and then give it to Igor to finish. I hope somehow Joe is able to rest in peace now that he's gone, because he never did in life. Re: [MOPO] Joe
During the early to mid 90's, Joe came by my house on numerous occasions delivering the posters he'd restored for me. He was a very engaging and likeable guy, taking an interest in not just me but my family as well. At his best, I still believe that Joe's work was unparalleled and that he took the art of movie poster restoration to a higher level than it had ever been before. He was a great teacher of the craft as well--- the evidence being so many restorers today primarily here on the West coast who studied under him and learned so much under his tutelage and as a result, now have businesses of their own. I think Joe's self-destructive fall from grace was a true tragedy. He had it all and literally threw it away. Mel Gibson had nothing on Joe Hernandez. Today, I prefer to remember the Joe I knew at that time rather than his later failings. Rest in peace, Joe. Rest in peace. [MOPO] Joe
Yes, mopoer's, thank you for responding with kind words. I was reluctant to post the news, and appreciate it very much that any negative comments have been respectful. Joe was a character, no one knows that better than me. In the latter years though, I do not regret any help I gave him and his children. He did train and help many restorers get their start and for that, I was grateful. Joe died of a massive brain hemorrhage. His health had been very bad the last few years. I was with him at the end, sadly, no family was there. [MOPO] Did you know that we've auctioned many times more movie posters than anyone else in the world?
*Did you know... that we've auctioned many times more movie posters than anyone else in the world?* We have long made the above statement, and *EVERYONE* in the hobby (including our competitors) knows it to be true, but we wanted to back this up with hard cold facts that show how our total sales dwarf everyone else's! Our database is incredibly accurate since the beginning of the 21st century on January 1, 2001 (not 2000, as some people erroneously think!). Since that date, we have auctioned the following quantities: * 307,812 total lobby cards auctioned 226,815 Total one-sheets auctioned 217,680 Total 8x10 stills auctioned* So we have auctioned around *three quarters of a million* of just those three sizes! And remember that those totals don't include the 15 million or so dollars of movie paper we sold from 1990 to the end of 2000!
