I chose that word to describe the "souls" you mentioned in your post earlier,
whereby you said Cinevent exists as a result of hard work being done for free,
e.g., essentially donated efforts by people who do so as a "labor of love" with
no compensation sought, i.e.:
"Cinevent
exists because guys like Steven Haynes, and all the members of his
family, plus a few more good souls, have worked tirelessly, for free,
just to mount the show….because for them it was a labor of love."
That's all I meant; it wasn't meant as a criticism towards you. You made some
good points. I wasn't trying to start a fight nor get sarcastic about the
exasperation, frustration, irritation and pessimism you expressed in your note.
 I get it now. -d.

I would never host the show because I am not what you described in your last

Columbus forever. Unless we have such volunteers in our midst, I agree with
you, Cinevent is dead. A bit hypocritical of me anyway as I have NEVER
attended Cinevent because of my own issues getting from point A to point B and
being spoiled when it comes to going to biz conventions several times a year.

Hollywood Show is still going strong. There are shows planned for April, July

in May. They get big crowds because it's an autograph show. Families come to
this show because they can enjoy the hotel facilities, which are admittedly

Running a show like Cinevent is a poor business

If somebody wants to run a movie memorabilia

Of course, it would cost some money. But then you’d actually be

I second the choice for Cleveland.. and it's even closer to Morrie's
home turf than Columbus, so it seems the logical choice.

And there are some great hotel venues in the downtown CLE area.. and
all no more than 15 min from Hopkins International

And as Dave K and others have suggested... it is also very central...

Several days ago, we received word that there had been significant damage to
the hotel at which our convention has been based in recent years, the Ramada
Plaza. Since that time, we have been working diligently to gather more
information regarding the situation at the Ramada and to investigate the
possibility of locating the convention at an alternate venue if that should be
necessary for 2015.

We are still in the process of gathering and evaluating information and expect
to be able to make an announcement about our plans for this year in the near
future, no later than the first week in March. Once we know what we will be
able to do in terms of this year's convention we will publish a revised
announcement. We ask for your support and patience while we determine how best
to proceed for this year.

Point well made, Zeev. I would never host the show because I am not what you
described in your last note, i.e., a member of a group of philanthropists
who've hosted Cinevent in Columbus forever. Unless we have such volunteers in
our midst, I agree with you, Cinevent is dead. A bit hypocritical of me anyway
as I have NEVER attended Cinevent because of my own issues getting from point A
to point B and being spoiled when it comes to going to biz conventions several
times a year. I was just thinking out loud about the various venues for an
event that sadly, has finally met its end like an old person suffering a
15-year-long terminal disease. - d.

I just can’t believe you guys….why don’t they do it here, why don’t they do it
there… because there’s no money in it! We just don’t support the shows!! That’s
why they’re folding one after the other….

Chicago….. Didn’t we have already shows in Chicago? Ray Courts was in Chicago
and folded. Mulqueen was in Chicago and folded. There were others, smaller
ones, in Chicago, I doubt they still exist.

You want large cities? Didn’t an L.A. shows just sing it’s swan song recently?
Is ray Courts still doing the L.A. show? It’s always on-again, off-again.

Yes, Cleveland is central….Didn’t Morrie Everett give it a go there? Of course
he has.

Columbus is/was the last Grande Dame of Movie Memorabelia shows, and what
happened? More people were belly aching about the shitty hotel than attending
the show. Year after year attendance decreased. Organizers were brainstorming
to find out why? How to improve the show? But nothing changed. Cinevent exists
because guys like Steven Haynes, and all the members of his family, plus a few
more good souls, have worked tirelessly, for free, just to mount the
show….because for them it was a labor of love…

Anybody want to step up and organize a show in Charlotte NC(Allen?), San Diego,
Chicago(David K?), Austin(Kirby?), or Vegas(Rich?)

I got it off my chest….

Cleveland and Chicago are natural choices. Cleveland is obvious, Chicago not so
obvious. Crazily enough, one of the better kept secrets is the Hyatt Regency
O'Hare. Flight crews stay there; rooms are moderately priced and clean and it's
cheap to host events - as every industry, from largest to wildest to tiniest,
hosts something there each year. Free shuttle to and from the airport - and the
hotel is a short walk to the Metro that takes you downtown in 30 minutes for
$5. NO car rental required. Hyatt is a pricey name, but it's the cheapest
property in greater Chicago because it's near the airport in Rosemont and deep
in the Chicago suburbs. -d.

Re: [MOPO] Will Cinevent take place this year?

2015-02-25 Thread Zeev Drach
Adrian, I’m pretty sure that the reason that Cinevent is in Columbus is because
the organizers live around there. There is no chance they’d move anywhere
else, certainly not as far as Texas, the Carolinas or other places that were
mentioned in this thread. Running a show like Cinevent is a poor business
proposition. Anybody doing it it’s because it is a labor of love.

If somebody wants to run a movie memorabilia show in Austin Texas, let them
step up and do it. It won’t happen if they expect someone else to bring it to
them on a silver platter, all the way from Columbus.

I find this news about the hotel is very sad, not because I’d miss it, but
because it does bring into question the very existence of Cinevent. I’m
surprised people are taking it so lightly, judging by the number of “funny”
posts in this thread.

When you asked if Cinevent will become part of Syracuse, I hope that was said
in jest…..Syracuse has already bitten the dust. This March will be their last
show.

Zeev

I am sure Cinevent doesn't come cheap...Morries auction alone costs a good
packet...and that being siad is why Columbus was used - the venue was cheap! I
am pretty sure if/when the venue is changed the prices of tables will go up!
The dealers will be complaining or not attending or certainly not taking a
table.

That is the dichotomy...

A venue change means more expenses - which will certainly chase a few dealers
away...last year quite a few dealers just took a room and dealt from there not
paying for a table...

Maybe this is the death knell of cinevent...If the Columbus hotel refurbishes
bet your wallet that the prices will go up - Insurance should cover the
work...but that comes at a premium. It will all have to be paid for...That
dealer room has to cost a few bucks for the weekend.

Lets face it - the bigger the convention the more people attend the quicker the
venue is paid for. Cinevent was losing dealers be it through lack of interest,
lack of buyers, people dying and people not being able to afford itso many
times the hotel was complained aboutnow it becomes more expensive and that
will be fact wherever it is moved to or refurbished.

In all seriousness if the venue were to move it makes a whole lot more sense
to go somewhere that most of the country can get a direct flight to if in
any reasonably larger city. Chicago, Dallas area, Minneapolis, Vegas J .

I never went before as it was way too long of drive and the air travel was
ridiculous to try and get there.

Why don't they get together with the Courts show (or whomever runs these
things now) and merge into 1 event in Chicago.

East or est coast or north or south then you stand to lose some of the dealers.
Columbus was not ideal but it was central - Cleveland is Morrie territory and
it is central. Or will Cinevent become part of Syracuse?

Re: [MOPO] Will Cinevent take place this year?

2015-02-25 Thread Adrian Cowdry

He could try putting it in one of the most film-loving cities in America:
Austin, Texas.

Of course, it would cost some money. But then you’d actually be somewhere when
you got there.

From all that I have heard it would be better if Morrie took over the event and
held it in Cleveland - it is central - start putting Cinevent in extreme parts
of the US - East or est coast or north or south then you stand to lose some of
the dealers. Columbus was not ideal but it was central - Cleveland is Morrie
territory and it is central. Or will Cinevent become part of Syracuse?

He could try putting it in one of the most film-loving cities in America:
Austin, Texas.
Of course, it would cost some money. But then you’d actually be somewhere when
you got there.

The really sad part of that is that for the elite of the hobby, probably the
only thing better than a dead bat in it the stairwell would be a corpse under a

I haven 't stayed at this hotel on ten years. Last year, I believe I expressed
my concern on MOPO that one day the owners of Cinevent would wake up to find
that the Shit Hole Hotel they insist on having this convention at each year was
condemned by the City of Columbus. Who knew I was clairvoyant.

Congratulations, Scott. Barbara would have been so proud to see MOPO celebrate
a 20 year birthday. Regards, rudy

On Tue, Feb 24, 2015 at 2:09 PM, Scott Burns wrote:

Well we made it to 20 after all!

Today marks MoPo’s 20th Anniversary. For the last couple of years, our
anniversary has been preceded by a discussion about how little we actually
discuss posters on this forum. This year it was John Reid’s February 12th post,
“How MoPo has Changed,” pointing out the lack of discussion or comment on movie
posters. In 2014, in time for our 19th birthday, Helmut posted an analysis of
MoPo posts (84% were either auction or for sale posts) and former member Bruce
H. mentioned how 2 other poster forums are pretty dead. I find it just an
interesting coincidence that this seems to happen just about every February
24th! But no matter…MoPo is still chugging along.

We’ve survived longer than I ever dreamed (much longer than the majority of
Hollywood marriages). On February 24, 1995 the first official MoPo post was
distributed via American University’s listserv. There were 11 members at the
start, and as is my annual custom, I recognize these MoPo pioneers: Mahtab
Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh Kai Shen, Evan
Zweifel, George Nichol, Cindy Nemeth-Johannes (we lost Cindy in 2008, but her
husband Jay is still a member), Jeff Static (AOL’er Static555), Adam Ehrlich
and myself. In addition to Jay, Michael, Rob and Evan are still members.

Last year I wondered whether MoPo would make it to 20, or if it even should.
Well, here we are and I guess we’ll soldier on…at least until American
University decides to shut down their listserv! I do hate to see longtime
members leave, (Poster seller Bruce Hershenson and the prolific Tom Martin are
2 examples of people who exited this past year), but that’s the way of Internet
forums.

Thanks to all of you for keeping this relic of the 20th century alive for yet
another year!

Scott

[MOPO] Will Cinevent take place this year?

2015-02-25 Thread Richard Halegua Posters + Comic Art
dammit.. the Ramada is finished and will probably not reopen (ever)
due to water damage.

from trip advisor:

To summarize: no heat in lobby, no cable all weekend, some showers
only had scalding hot water, some showers only had ice cold water,
mold in rooms, dressers hadn't been dusted ever, never got extra
towels, no cups in rooms, no refrigerator, ice makers didn't work on
any floor, phone didn't work so couldn't call front desk, pool half
full, hot tub was roped off with a power line hanging above it, dead
bat in stairwell and to top it offfire alarms went off at 7 am
Sunday due to pipes bursting on the 5th floor due to no heat up
there. Water gushing out of the elevators, down stairways, flooding
rooms & hallways and making at least 2 inches of ice at the exit
door. Checking out was insane and the poor girl at the front desk had
to deal with dozens of irate customersno management to be found.
We had over $ 4,000 worth of rooms that all refused to pay for.

so the question is at this late date will Steve Haynes be able to

[MOPO] [FS] Newly Added

2015-02-25 Thread David Rew
Just added were a number of items to the site well worth looking at,
some you'll not find them anywhere else in the world.

The Australian dollar fell a little more overnight so $100 US dollars
gets you approximately $126 Australian dollars on BIDLL - don't think of
it as spending money, think of it as saving money. That's what my wife
tells me every-time she comes back from a shoe sale...

Wow, 20 years! Scott, my old friend - thanks again for ALL that you do for us!

I'm very proud to be a "founding member" of this group. I don't post often, but
read a lot of it. I still have an amazing collection that is basically only
appreciated by me. I too plan to begin to sell off and thin out over the next
few years, and MOPO will certainly be a vehicle for that.
Congrats again to all of us, and I'm looking forward to the next 20!

Well we made it to 20 after all!

Today marks MoPo's 20th Anniversary. For the last couple of years, our
anniversary has been preceded by a discussion about how little we actually
discuss posters on this forum. This year it was John Reid's February 12th
post, "How MoPo has Changed," pointing out the lack of discussion or comment
on movie posters. In 2014, in time for our 19thbirthday, Helmut posted an
analysis of MoPo posts (84% were either auction or for sale posts) and
former member Bruce H. mentioned how 2 other poster forums are pretty dead.
I find it just an interesting coincidence that this seems to happen just
about every February 24th! But no matter.MoPo is still chugging along.

We've survived longer than I ever dreamed (much longer than the majority of
Hollywood marriages). On February 24, 1995 the first official MoPo post was
distributed via American University's listserv. There were 11 members at the
start, and as is my annual custom, I recognize these MoPo pioneers: Mahtab
Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh Kai Shen, Evan
Zweifel, George Nichol, Cindy Nemeth-Johannes (we lost Cindy in 2008, but
her husband Jay is still a member), Jeff Static (AOL'er Static555), Adam
Ehrlich and myself. In addition to Jay, Michael, Rob and Evan are still
members.

Last year I wondered whether MoPo would make it to 20, or if it even should.
Well, here we are and I guess we'll soldier on.at least until American
University decides to shut down their listserv! I do hate to see longtime
members leave, (Poster seller Bruce Hershenson and the prolific Tom Martin
are 2 examples of people who exited this past year), but that's the way of
Internet forums.

Thanks to all of you for keeping this relic of the 20th century alive for
