Wht??? Bill Stout did your album cover??!! Been following his career for
years. Before I was a poster dork I was a cartoon dork. You know he did the
art on the Rock and Roll High School one-sheet, right? So the guy who put
the Ramones on a poster is doing your album cover. I'll buy it! (Also, I
hear the music is pretty good.)

OK, OK, this post is a bit of a stretch but there are enough hobby related
characters in the tale to make it ALMOST relevant (although a flame or two
would not be completely unexpected)
As some of you know, i am a guitarist/songwriter who had achieved a modest
degree of notoriety for my work with Steve Miller, Hot Tuna, Big brother &
the Holding Co., Van Morrison, Greg Kihn and, OK, enough of THAT, right?
Suffice to say I make enough off music to support my poster habit.
I recently hooked up with Richard Halegua at second-tier comic show. Rich
and I had a blast hanging out speaking reams of fluent geek when I met a pal
of his. We hit it off instantly; he knew a LOT about music. He and I we both
stunned to discover that I knew many of his decades old vinyl bootleg cover
art, including an EC-style "Tale from the Who". We bullshitted for a very
long time and i mentioned that I had just finished what i felt was my
absolute best collection of musical work. He agreed to do the cover, and
deal was struck. Shortly after, I discovered he was none other than Willam
Stout, an album artist, movie poster designer ("Wizards" comes to mind, ,
the set designer for ZZ Top's early 90s tour, and th creator of many of the
undead pinks in "The Return of the Living Dead" . He told me recently that
he would have purchased my CD regardless and considered it string career
renaissance for me. The CD is now up for Best Rock CD at the San Diego Music
Awards, among other honors. Final side note: my pal was playing the CD
(titled "Flight of the Golden Dragon" by Greg Douglass & the Accomplices
when Steve Miller's manager dropped. He exclaimed, "Holy s**t, who is
THAT?". My pal informed him it was me. Mr. Miller, my former boss, was
called and 15 minutes later I was the opening act on October 8 at the Sonoma
Music Festival, going on before Paul Barrere , Dave Mason, and... Steve
Miller. I am under consideration for an opening slot on an upcoming world
your if things go well.
Somehow, MOPO played a part in the whole thing maybe I'll be able to get a
another copy of that INVISIBLE GHOST sheet i so floating let go of during a
moment of unfortunate $tupidity.
The CDs in question are available on Ebay, ten bucks + zero shipping, if you
wish to hear what the hubbub is about.
Yes, I am living proof that it is possible to be both a dweebus Americanus
and at least borderline cool.

Re: [MOPO] OT: Selling photo jpeg images question

2016-08-17 Thread Daniel Edward Kinske
I’ve found it is common for whatever entity issuing the image to have an
indemnification for themselves, so if you order an image at the Academy of
Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences library, you sign the typical form that states
they are not the owner of the copyright and that it is up to the person
purchasing the scan to clear the image.

Though, the Academy is odd (so this makes us even!) in that they offer a two
tier (many tears for me) system of charing $40 for an image at 300 dpi and $80
for one at 600 dpi, which is of course bullshit as it is a simple setting and
they shouldn’t be toggling back and forth with the dpi, just stick to it’s true
optical dpi and go from there. And though print uses 300 dpi, it doesn’t give
you much room to play with, so really 600 should be standard in the
“acquisition” aspect, meaning you should capture the scan at a high DPI, then
step it down for your project (you can digitally/artificially increase the
resolution of an image—but garbage in, garbage out—it isn’t ideal and really
won’t look good, for print anyway.)

Conversely, you can actually take a camera into the Archives at the American
History Museum in D.C.—which is very surprising as you can take pictures with a
professional camera and will get beyond publishable images.

The National Portrait Gallery will provide people working on any project, of
any kind, to have access to images in their archive for free (gotta love D.C.),
but some artists require permission or clearance from the estate before the
image is released. Some, like 99 year young artist Miriam Troop will grant
permission and not charge, others like the Hirschfeld Foundation (formerly the
Margo Feiden Gallery, but she is being sued by the Foundation—now play nice
kiddies ;) will give permission with a written contract and payment per image.

I think every collector should scan everything they own if feasible. Digital
images can get corrupted and one should never assume the poster has been
already captured. We “captured” the movie “London After Midnight” for a few
decades too, but we see how that worked out…
