[MOPO] Cinevent 46 - Coming in Two Weeks! Two tables available...

2014-05-08 Thread Steve Haynes
The 46th annual edition of Cinevent opens two weeks from today - it's a
gathering of hundreds of movie buffs and film and movie memorabilia
collectors who will spend the weekend buying and selling and watching
classic silent and sound era movies.

For basic information, check out the options at
www.cinevent.com under Cinevent Topic through the Cinevent FAq Section.
Especially check out the When things happen at Cinevent link (

http://www.cinevent.com/when_events.html) and the Cinevent Film Program link
(

http://www.cinevent.com/cgi-bin/progarch/dispsched.cgi?schedyear=2014&titlec
v=Cinevent 46).

At other links on the page you can pre-register on line, get hotel
information and more.

DEALERS! Until a couple of days ago our dealers space was completely sold
out. Now, due to last minute cancellations we have a total of three tables
still available for the show: a single table location and a two table
location, both in the Grand Ballroom! Here's the deal:

Grand Ballroom CENTER tables: First table, $135, each additional table,
$110. One or two tables includes full registrations for the dealer and one
helper. Tables 120 (the single) and tables 108 and 109 are available.

For the locaion of these tables in the ballroom, see map at:

http://www.cinevent.com/BallroomMap.html

There are two entrances to the room - one between tables 1 and 53, the other
between tables 6 and 7 (which is not as tight as it looks on the map.)

If you are interested, contact us at
cinev...@columbus.rr.com.

We hope to see you at the show!

Re: [MOPO] Bernard Herrmann, "Vertigo" and "The Artist"

2012-02-14 Thread Steve Haynes
I finally saw The Artist last week. I knew about the Vertigo quote and
thought that Herrmann's music suited the scene to which it had been applied,
but I still find the use questionable. One of my friends who saw the film
before I did, told me that the Vertigo quote pulled him completely out of
the film. I can see his point - the score to Vertigo is iconic if every a
films score can be referred to as such.

On the film itself, I did thoroughly enjoy it, but don't really see it as
best of the year. I thought Hugo was a terrific film, and of the two "silent
era" echoes currently at the multiplexes, much more worthy of the praise
that has been heaped on The Artist, enjoyable as it is.

Re: [MOPO] Cinevent

2011-05-31 Thread Steve Haynes
Just a few word from Cinevent Central.

Yes, there were problems with the hotel, and most of what has been written
about the hotel's condition and status is reasonably accurate. It was sold
about four weeks ago and a lot of the problems experienced by our attendees
can be directly linked to the sudden sale and the ensuing attempts to
stablize back to reasonable service.

I will be sending out an email to those who attended asking for their
comments on problems with the hotel and things they feel could be improved
about the show. When I have that collated I will look at the Cinevent
related complaints/suggestions and see what can be implemented; I will take
the hotel issues up with the person I work with at the Ramada.

We're also working on redoing our web site. (Someone made a comment about
our lack of use of technology. I'd like specific suggestions along that
line, direct to my email if possible:
st...@cinevent.com.)

I will also be looking at hotel options, should next year's show (which we
are contracted to be at the Ramada) not bring correction to the most
significant problems we experienced this year.

As to why we have not left the Ramada - the last time I looked, there were
two places in th Columbus area that could accommodate the show, and both of
them would have caused unacceptable price increases in order to continue.
There is a wide range of "ability to pay" represented by those attending
Cinevent and while many would be OK with paying more for registration,
tables and/or accomodations, many would not. We want to keep the show
affordable to as many people as possible.

A secondary element in our continued relationship is the stablily of the
on-site staff running the hotel. In 43 years I have dealt with hotels where
the staff turned over virtually every year, which means reinventing the
whell, over and over again. Not only has the staff at the Ramada (whatever
name it had at the time) been very stable, they know us and even this year,
we would have fared much worse, as would our guests without the folk we have
worked with for years. When they were unable to satisfy us amd our guests
this year, it could generally be traced to the present chaotic conditions
that there were doing their best to overcome. This is one reason I think we
can hope that this year's issues will be corrected and not recur in 2012.

That said there may be new hotels in the area that could accomodate us of
which I am not aware. I will be contacting the convention bureau to see if
there are new affordable alternatives, so we can have a viable backup plan.

Just a few of my thoughts, to let those of you who may think I don't have
any know, it ain't so!

[MOPO] Cinevent 43 Dealers Tables

2011-05-02 Thread Steve Haynes
Cinevent 43 is coming, May 27-30 2011 to The Ramada Plaza Hotel and
Conference Center, Columbus, Ohio. Information on the show is available at
<http://www.cinevent.com> www.cinevent.com.

There are two dealer room areas at the show:

The Grand Ballroom dealers area is adjacent to our Screening Room and
consists of approximately 140 tables (in the Ballroom, Room H across the
foyer and in the foyer itself.) This area is sold out, except for one foyer
table.

The Cinevent Gallery dealers area is on the 6th floor of the hotel and
consists of the three rooms not occupied by The Hollywood Poster Art Auction
( <http://www.hollywoodposterauction.com/>
http://www.hollywoodposterauction.com/). The rooms total approximately 40
tables. This area is sold out except for 6 center tables in the Columbus
Room, the largest of the four rooms.

Ballroom area foyer tables are not secured overnight, so a dealer wishing to
take these tables must remove their merchandise at the close of each day.

The Columbus Room center tables consist of 3 2-table "L" shaped set-ups,
which are prices the same as one of the (sold out) wall tables in that room
($85). The available tables are tables C-D, E-F and G-H, and their position
in the room may be seen at our Gallery Room Maps page (
<http://www.cinevent.com/GalleryMap.html>
http://www.cinevent.com/GalleryMap.html).

If you are interested in any of these tables, please contact me at
<mailto:st...@cinevent.com> st...@cinevent.com or leave a message on our
voice mail: (866) 785-7687 and I will return your call as soon as possible.

Hope to see you at Cinevent!

[MOPO] Cinevent 43 Program Book Advertising

2011-05-02 Thread Steve Haynes
In one of the less earth-shaking announcements of this morning, CINEVENT
announces the availability of advertising in its annual convention program
book.

In addition to increasing the size of the program book from the previous
digest size to closer to standard magazine size, for the first time we are
offering dealers the opportunity to get news of their classic film related
goods and services to the approximately 700 people who attend our event,
held in Columbus, Ohio over Memorial Day Weekend (May 27-30 this year.)

Deadline for camera ready ads is Friday, May 20, 2011 and ads are available
in the following sizes:

FULL PAGE (10" high by 7 1/2" wide): $100
HALF PAGE (5" high by 7 1/2" wide): $55
QUARTER PAGE (5" high by 3 3/4" wide): $30

Ads are preferred as .jpg, .pdf or Microsoft Word files and should be at 300
dpi or "Print Resolution."

If you want to place an ad, prepare your ad in one of the preferred formats
and visit our web site program book ad pages at:
<http://www.cinevent.com/CV_PB_Ads.html>
http://www.cinevent.com/CV_PB_Ads.html. Follow the links at the bottom of
the pages to step through the ad submission process on line. You will be
able to pay for the ad using PayPal, or print out your ad submission
information to send payment by mail. Following payment, or printing to
submit by mail, you will be able to upload your ad to the Cinevent web site
(be sure to remember where you saved the ad file on your computer!)

If you have any questions, email me at <mailto:st...@cinevent.com>
st...@cinevent.com or leave a message on our voice mail: (866) 785-7687 and
I will return your call as soon as possible.

Thanks, and we hope to see many of you at Cinevent!

[MOPO] Cinevent: Three Ballroom Tables!

2010-05-24 Thread Steve Haynes

interested? These are possitioned just inside of one of the two entry points,
and are center tables, two facing the aisle and one around the corner. Contact

There will be a lot that will look familiar but a lot has changed too. Welcome
back!

Other MOPO Folk -

If you haven't come before or have been away for a long time, come see us. It's
hard for me to imagine a film person at Cinevent who wouldn't at a minimum have
a good time meeting some people they'd never been face to face with and/or
rediscovering some old friends!

Re: [MOPO] Table Availability at Cinevent 42

2010-05-05 Thread Steve Haynes
Cinevent 42 is now less than a month away!

Normally the dealers rooms have all sold out around this time, barring the
occasional last minute cancellation.

This, however, is not a normal year – a couple of regular dealers have decided
to retire from active participation, and a couple more have family commitments
that will keep them away this year only.

Usually, new dealers wanting to try Cinevent for the first time would help fill
us up and that has happened. BUT a dealer who has taken the entire Dayton room
in the 6th floor Gallery area will be unable to attend this year and this
leaves us with 11 wall tables to fill.

I wanted to post this information here in the hope that some of you who have
never attended Cinevent might consider checking out the show.

The Dayton Room is across the hall from the Columbus Room (the largest 6th
Floor dealer room) and is the entrance before the one leading to Creepy
Classics/Monster Pre-Bash, which should enhance 6th floor traffic.

The first table in the Dayton Room can be reserved for $85, and each additional
table is $60. There is no limit to the number of tables per dealer (except of
course the capacity of the room!)

All I am asking for at this time is for those of you who are interested to let
me know how many tables you would need.  You can look at the layout and
position of this room among the other Gallery Dealer rooms at the following
link:

http://www.cinevent.com/DaytonRoom2010.html

Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested. By Monday May
17th, if not sooner, I will be confirming table requests for this room.

ALSO: There are TWO single tables in the Ballroom that MAY be available. If you
are interested in, and can work with, one 6' by 2 1/2' table, let me know and I
will let you know if I can provide one as soon as I can clarify their status!

[MOPO] Remembering Sam Rubin

2009-06-29 Thread Steve Haynes
I have heard from Jay Rubin that his father, Samuel K. Rubin, died on June 26,
2009. His funeral will be in Indiana, Pa. on Wednesday, July 1. Visitation
will occur on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:00
a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Services will be at funeral home, Bence-Mihalcik at
11:00 a.m. followed by graveside services at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of
flowers, the family suggests donations to Beth Israel Synagogue, S. 5th and
Washington Streets, Indiana, Pa 15701; Penn's Woods Council, BSA, memorial
fund, 201 W. High Street, Ste. 1, Ebensberg, PA 15931, or a charity of the
donor's choice.

If you have a favorite charity devoted to film preservation, that would
certainly be a fitting choice.

While some younger classic film buffs may not recognize the name, Sam Rubin,
and his
enthusiasm for (especially) silent classics led directly to his role as the
creator of Classic Images magazine (first known as The 8mm Collector, then
Classic Film Collector,) He was, with help and support of fellow fans, founder
of the Society for Cinephiles and the still running Cinecon annual film
convention. These actions ultimately led to the origin of Cinevent, Cinefest
(Syracuse), Cinesation (Saginaw, Bay City, now Massillon, Ohio) and who knows
which other fan events. Leonard Maltin credits Sam for publishing his first
written article (when Leonard was 13!)

When I first met Sam over 40 years ago (I'm not sure at this point, but it was
probably at MY first Cinecon in Dearborn, Michigan) he was younger than I am
now. During the developing years of Cinevent, his support through Classic Film
Collector and occasional phone conversations and meetings at other shows, were
a great help to me, John Baker, John Stingley and Art Graves. When Sam retired
from an active role in the classic film community, his influence remained, and
while maybe not obvious to "newercomers," continues.

Fortunately, Sam put together a book: Moving Pictures and Classic Images:
Memories of Forty Years in the Vintage Film Hobby. It's partially made up of
writings from his over 300 issue tenure at Classic Images and its forerunners,
and partially, as the title indicates, reminiscence of his life in film. (It
was published by McFarland and you can find it at Amazon and the other usual
book sources.)

Many of you have asked me over the years how Cinevent began - that's covered in
the book as is much more. Sam presents the broader picture of the "Vintage Film
Hobby" mostly in his own written voice, which old-timers will remember and
which the rest of you will likely find enlightening and entertaining. I
recommend it - it's our history, from our founding father!

[MOPO] About TWO WEEKS Until Cinevent 41

2009-05-06 Thread Steve Haynes
Cinevent, the annual gathering of film buffs and collectors held over
Memorial Day Weekend in Columbus, Ohio is now just 2 weeks off.

Cinevent 41 opens at 9 am, Friday, May 22 when the dealers rooms open - this
year the convention is two tables away from a complete sellout, and over 170
tables will be filled with thousands and thousands of movie item, including
One Sheets, Lobby Cards, Stills, Autographs, Books, LPs and CDs, Video, DVDs
and Laserdiscs, as well as most other categories of movie collectibles.

Gas look like it will be only a bit over half of what it ran most of last
year so consider making the trip, if it's not already in your plans.

The best days to shop are the earliest, Friday or Saturday - single day
registrations are available at $15 each, per day, at the door - or come for
the whole weekend and enjoy our classic film presentations as well (full
convention registrations are $40 each at the door, but you can save $5 by
preregistering at our website www.cinevent.com.)

Don't forget that the Annual Hollywood Poster Auction (formerly the Vintage
Poster Art Auction) takes place Saturday and Sunday at the same hotel, The
Ramada Plaza Hotel and Conference Center. As of this writing, rooms are
still available, but the hotel is typically sold out for Cinevent weekend -
information on the hotel is also available at our web site and be sure to
mention Cinevent to get the special convention rate.

You can also contact me if you have other question - email is best and
you'll get answered most quickly using that route!

Hope to see some of you there!

Just a quick note to let any interested dealers know that there are six (6)

out. These tables are in Cinevent Gallery (near the annual Vintage Movie
Poster Art Auction) in the Cleveland Room on the 6th floor the Ramada Plaza
Hotel and Conference Center.

Cinevent will be held May 23-26, 2008 in Columbus, Ohio.

If any of you are interested in some of these last tables contact me via
email at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Preregistration for this year's show is on par with last year and we expect

[MOPO] Cinevent Attendance

2007-05-28 Thread Steve Haynes
Thought you folks might like to know that after a decade of slow decline,
Cinevent attendance this year was up about 7% - the largest single increase
in attendance since the Vintage Poster Art Auction joined us on Memorial Day
weekend years ago.

Needless to say, we are delighted to make up a huge check of the numbers we
had lost, and this should give us all hope that the increase indicates the
rumors of the death of film collectors conventions are greatly exaggerated!

Hope to see even more MOPOers here for our 40th Anniversary show over
Memorial Day Weekend in May of 2008.

[MOPO] CINEVENT - Some More Answers!

2007-05-02 Thread Steve Haynes
This is Steve Haynes, a founder of CINEVENT, offering a bit of additional
information about #39, coming up in Columbus, Ohio, May 25 thru 28.

First of all, I've recently updated the web site with a few Frequently Asked
Questions (and, helpfully, the answers!) which can be found on our Home
Page. Somebody already posted that link, but here it is again so you don't
have to go looking for it:

http://www.cinevent.com/index2.html

Of course you can email me with any questions as well:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

ALSO: we are down to a single digit number of dealers tables still
available. These tables are located on the same level of the hotel as the
Vintage Poster Art Auction. One table is $75 and additional tables are $50,
but at this point I can only offer 3 tables, and still have them all
together! We are likely to sell out before the show, but if any of our
previous dealers has not acted yet, it wouldn't be a bad thing if a few new
dealers took the remaining tables. New blood (and new material for the
buyers!) is generally a good thing.

If you are interested in giving Cinevent a try as a dealer, email me at the
address above and I will get the necessary forms to you.

Hope to see a lot of you as new faces at CINEVENT 39!

[MOPO] Cinevent, Coming May 26-29, 2006

2006-05-08 Thread Steve Haynes
Hello fellow MOPO-L subscribers! I wanted to post a few words about the
upcoming 38th annual edition of the Columbus (Ohio) CINEVENT. As one of the
founders I have been gratified to see the convention grow from its initial
session of 25 or so film collectors to many times that number of film buffs
and collectors, but like anything running this many years we are always on
the lookout for "new blood!"

So if the idea of a weekend of screenings of classic silent and pre-1950
sound features and shorts and of dealers rooms with over 170 tables full of
thousands and thousands of movie collectibles of all sorts appeals to you,
and if you have either never attended CINEVENT or haven't been to one in the
last five years, have we got a deal for you. Clicking on the link below
will take you to a page with some more detailed information on the show--and
a link on THAT page will take you to a coupon good for a discount on single
day or full convention registrations.

Feel free to visit our full website at www.cinevent.com, but come back to
the link in this post if you need to get back to the discount coupon.

If you have any other questions you can email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
