Re: [MOPO] Membership Numbers Over the Years

2024-02-25 Thread Greg Douglass
I keep hearing that Fifties horror/sci-fi prices are softening. Then I get hammered (brutally outbid) by people with more enthusiasm and deeper pockets than myself at Bruce's auctions. (Heritage prices do seem to be a bit lower these days, however.)

I don't know what to believe. I do keep seeing crazy prices on those pieces on eBay. I seriously doubt anyone's going to pay 9K for an "Amazing Colossal Man" 3 sheet, for example.

But ya never know. I saw a "Forbidden Planet" one sheet in 1981 selling for $300. "No one will EVER pay that!", I harrumphed.

What do I know?

By March 2006 we had dropped to about 435 members. Numbers went below 400 for the first time around 2008. For most of the 2010’s we held steady in the 300’s, but numbers have trickled down in the last couple of years to 250—where we are today.

There are some people who aren’t actually subscribed, but read posts via the Mail Archive. I don’t know how many that might be, but likely it’s not a large number.

Thanks Scott. Any thought towards starting a Facebook group SOLELY as a
recruitment page? People like me with big Facebook presenses could them
link to it, and you could post in the various groups.

Just an idea, and feel free to dismiss it!

Re: [MOPO] Membership Numbers Over the Years

2024-02-25 Thread Moviemem Original Movie Posters
I think the reason that numbers are lower is because Facebook and other social
media pages have exploded in popularity and taken over from online forums and
groups in recent years.
Looking at just a few of the specialist groups, they all have well over 1000
members / subscribers and cover a huge range of movie poster collecting
categories. It is also interesting that a huge number of movie posters are
bought and sold on these pages with no fees or commission.
I think it illustrates that Movie Poster collecting is more popular than ever.

2024-02-25 Thread Adam at Art of the Movies
I imagine it is that when new individuals develop an interest in movie posters
they turn to Facebook, Instagram etc and few manage to lock on to a listserv
(even if they know what it is).

I am a relatively new member, perhaps 4-5 years, and find it a wonderful
community and a great source of information that is a result of the depth and
breadth of knowledge of the members. I have bought from a few members and have
even met a couple in person (hello Morris!). Long may it continue.

Thanks Scott.

Adam.
