Here is Ron's e mail. However, he is not a big fan of e mailing & prefers
people call his store. Margaret usually gets his e mails for him. Jim

There was book store up the street that was selling a "Forbidden Planet" one

collector. "That poster will still be hanging there in 20 years".

Re: [MOPO] Ron borst interview

2016-06-09 Thread Susan
The interview with Ron was great. I've known him since he opened his shop in
1979 when I would hit Hollywood Blvd. to go see him and Eric Caiden around the
corner. I bought my first poster from Larry Edmunds bookstore in 1973. The
70's and 80's were a great time for poster collecting and finding those little
"gems". I remember my friend Donovan Brandt, who was about 11 years old the
time and who's Dad Eddie Brandt has had a movie related shop forever here in
the San Fernando Valley, reminiscing about a time when Ron and his Dad were
"negotiating" over the cost of what Eddie would sell a poster to Ron for. I
think it was for a Bride of Frankenstein half sheet. It was fun to hear Ron's
still enthusiastic commentary on the hobby and his collection.

I was talking to someone yesterday about the interview and what part "luck"
played in Ron's collection and my own collection. We probably paid the same
amount of money for certain titles, he just collected titles that turned out to
be worth the most money years later. I collected Hitchcock in the early days
and, while they have gone up in value greatly, nothing compares to the value
appreciation of those Universal classics. I had a guy in 1985 offer me the
original Dracula one sheet for $3500. He might as well have been asking for 35
million dollars. My rent in those days on my apartment was $150 a month. He
said he could go down to $3000 for me and I told him he could go down to $300
and it would still be a stretch for me. Boy, was I a dope!! I always hoped
that guy never sold his Dracula and somehow he either still has it or he waited
long enough for it to realize a big number.

So, great interview Andrew..it was a fun walk down memory lane
for us old timers

I listened to this yesterday. I started collecting around the same time, 1963,
and I remember those prices...! I got a list from L.A. of all original
Universal material around 1965. We're talking The Good Stuff. They were priced
$20-75, which was outrageous at the time. I still remember asking my dad for an
advance on my allowance so I could get something from "Bride of Frankenstein".
"If it was for something sensible like stamps, I'd consider...but you'd just be
wasting your money on this crap."
Oh well. I probably would have purchased the poster and thumb-tacked it to my
wall.
The interview is highly recommended. I have had nothing but great dealings with
Mr. Borst and his lovely missus. His collection is unthinkably deepBela
Lugosi's Social Security card?
