I've used a few and ended up using Dario Casadei's Vintage Movie Art for the
last four to five years - I ship my posters from England to Vancouver for linen
backing and restoration and have always been really pleased with the service I
receive from Dario.

Some people have asked me, if, I am at all concerned about my posters being
lost in transit over such a distance, my reply has always been that I've always
found gravity in ample supply to get my parcels from A to B.

Hi, Mike,

I've used several linenbackers and I am completely happy with Sylvia
Locken from Precision Restoration. Sue Heim can give you her contact
information
and I often leave items with Sue as Sylvia will come by to pick up
items from Sue and return them every few weeks. That way I can have
Sue frame the
backed and possibly restored item when Sylvia returns with the final
product to Sue.

She is especially well-known for her work on Lobby Cards, Half-Sheets
and Inserts. Her linenbacking is first rate and the quality of her
paper-backing
is unsurpassed. I recently had Sylvia paperback a 40x60 of BEAST
FROM HAUNTED CAVE that needed some TLC. It now looks stunningly
gorgeous.

Contact me if you'd like to see "before" and "after" pics.

Mike, I am sure all who have been mentioned do superior work, but of
those mentioned, I have only had experience and am completely happy

with Sylvia's work.

Patrick

Very good advice, Phil.
I also can vouch for Dario Casadei and Debi Jacobson. Also, Sylvia Locken...I
think she does fine work and I use her a lot because she is local and
thoroughly professional. Most collectors would be very happy with the work of
these three.

2008-09-08 Thread Phil Edwards

Jaime Mendez is very high on my list, but there are others.

I think you need to look at the job that needs to be done. If it's straight
linen backing and low level resto, then there are several.

Just ask them what the turnaround time is. Get a quote. Shop around for
quotes on easy jobs. A couple of the "names" might have a single piece for
6-8 months, which is patently ridiculous.

I have had work done through Debi J. that was as good or better than
anything I had done through others.

Anyone you have never used before, make sure you take plenty of photos of
the areas that need the work and when you get your piece back go over those
areas with a blacklight or strong backlight. They better match.

Unfortunately, one of the best is now retired. Some of you know who she is.

Always discuss with your linen backer the level of resto you want done. The
less the better. Cosmetic perfection in resto on film posters may be the
norm for some collectors, but most institutions such as museums, and
archives are horrified at what film poster collectors do to some posters in
their aim for that perfection. If it's what you want, fine.

Finally, make sure the piece you want done really needs it. Movie posters
are from the world of the sub rosa collectible. They were meant to be used
and discarded. Signs of wear and use are also part of their history as
artifacts related to an art form. Of course finding pieces (rarer pieces) in
fabulous condition is a big plus - just as anyone will tell you that a fine
plus example of something of value that is unbacked is a better find than
one that is.

Perhaps the most insane thing I see is posters being linen backed that don't
need it at all - like new rolled one sheets or perfect condition daybills. A
while back one of those rare, double-sided ZULU one sheets showed up. A big
percentage of it's interest and its rarity was that it was a double sided
poster from that period and someone linen backed it.

We have many linen backed posters on and off our website. There's an
absolute reason why every single one of them was done.
