Dear Channing--
You are, of course, FAR from being an ignorant and uninformed man-- but you do prove the point that things get forgotten. What is probably the most fascinating thing is that Rush Limbaugh (and others on both sides of the political stream!!) obviously so wants to be Winchell--- but now there are so many venues, e.g., 300 television channels, sattelite radio, etc) that there will probably never be another. Hell, even little kids listened to his program.
Following is the link to a mini-bio that mentions the Neal Gabler biography that I read with absolute fascination. What it misses is that in the late 50s, Winchell's gravelly and urgent vocal delivery was used to great effect in the narrations for "The Untouchables" tv show.
Check this out:

Even Hedda and Louell di'nt have nuttin' on Winchell.
Joe

PS-- In the film version of "Sweet Bird of Youth," (just released on dvd), Geraldine Page's charcter holds a conversation with Winchell on the phone. "Walter, you don't MEAN it!  My talent has GROWN?????!!"
