This is the point in time -- as the interest in the movie has just peaked
and it has won its awards -- that the general public is most interested in
picking up a poster for the film and hanging it on the wall. So, naturally,
prices are at their peak as well.

Just as naturally, the studio printing division is cranking out as many as
they can to meet the peak demand.

Over the next year the peak of interest will fade as new summer blockbusters
and must have posters come out. Not to mention the fact that by then
everyone and their 3rd Uncle will have at least one AVATAR poster on their
wall and they will become old hat. At that point, prices start to fall. If
past interest/pricing cycles of blockbuster films is any indicator, most
AVATAR posters will be selling for $10 bucks or so in a year or two.

Of course, 5 years from now, when they have stopped printing most versions
of the AVATAR movie posters and most of those now on walls have been taken
down and either thrown away or stuffed in a closet, then pricing will start
to rise as interest among real collectors slowly grows. This is a landmark
film, after all, and 10 to 20 years from now it will have value. Because of
the huge numbers printed, probably not as much long-term value as many other
landmark films of the past, but they will be worth something.

Re: [MOPO] So much for new posters being worth only 5 bucks.

2010-03-17 Thread James Richard

Franc,

Well, a lot of time and money has been wasted over the decades trying to
predict which posters would be valuable in the future, but we can say
that posters from science-fiction, fantasy, monster and horror films
tend to do better overall as collectibles than most other film genres.
Except for early classics, western film posters don't appreciate a lot
anymore (while the poster for DANCES WITH WOLVES was decent, the film
was essentially a western), nor do social commentary/consciousness film
posters increase much in value (CRASH falls into this area and besides,
the poster was just awful as a poster), nor do most romantic comedy
posters (SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, and that poster was totally uninspired
anyway).

The AVATAR posters, on the other hand, have very good graphics and,
within the sci-fi collecting genre, there's no doubt film will remain a
landmark, if not in the mind of the general public. For those reasons, I
expect better examples of AVATAR posters to end up in the $75 to $125
range in 10 years of so. But that's just an educated guess, and since
they are printing so bloody many of them right now, who knows? Dealers
are socking them away in inventory in bulk lots against the day they are
worth big bucks, so that day may well never come to pass.

P.S. -- I have to disagree with your statement that Dances With Wolves,
Crash and Shakespeare In Love, are films one wouldn't watch again on a
bet. I saw and enjoyed all 3 when released, and then watched them again
years later and still enjoyed them. All three are excellent films and
hold up well to re-watching. That's more than I can say for the
never-ending flood of blockbuster films made from comic books, plastic
kiddie toys, old TV shows and Disney theme park rides.

Well said, Franc.

AVATAR a Landmark? not really. Hyped? for sure. Great graphics and
motion capture- of course... but there are already films in the
pipeline that will leap past AVATAR, due to ever better CG software
continually being developed or finessed.

When Peter Jackson's version of KING KONG was released, the same kind
of observations were made, because of the incredible CG work done.
Already today, it looks a bit animated in places.

Re: [MOPO] So much for new posters being worth only 5 bucks.

2010-03-16 Thread Franc
To each his own. I consider both to be among the worst written
Academy-award winning films ever but that's really not the point. The
posters are worth nothing today. FRANC

This is the point in time -- as the interest in the movie has just
peaked and it has won its awards -- that the general public is most
interested in picking up a poster for the film and hanging it on the
wall. So, naturally, prices are at their peak as well.

Just as naturally, the studio printing division is cranking out as many
as they can to meet the peak demand.

Over the next year the peak of interest will fade as new summer
blockbusters and must have posters come out. Not to mention the fact
that by then everyone and their 3rd Uncle will have at least one AVATAR
poster on their wall and they will become old hat. At that point, prices
start to fall. If past interest/pricing cycles of blockbuster films is
any indicator, most AVATAR posters will be selling for $10 bucks or so
in a year or two.

Of course, 5 years from now, when they have stopped printing most
versions of the AVATAR movie posters and most of those now on walls have
been taken down and either thrown away or stuffed in a closet, then
pricing will start to rise as interest among real collectors slowly
grows. This is a landmark film, after all, and 10 to 20 years from now
it will have value. Because of the huge numbers printed, probably not as
much long-term value as many other landmark films of the past, but they
will be worth something.

But then again, those two movies have poor posters.  In my opinion.

Not sure why Avatar is included with films that won best picture.
