I have family there, and my cousin (now a sophmore in college) went through the
public school system in Lake Zurich. I think the area is great.

Hi Meg,

Lake Zurich is a good district; the community has
really grown over the last several years. This should
not be a problem at all. A good friend of mine
teaches there.

Re: [MOSAIC] 6th grade novels

2007-01-04 Thread Feix, Susan
I have taught novels consistently in the classroom for many years.
These books are suitable for strong readers in the 6th grade. My
favorites, which provide a wide range of topics for discussion and
incorporate the teaching of many different strategies, include:
Walk Two Moons - Sharon Creech
The House of the Scorpion - Nancy Farmer
Wrinkle in Time - Madeline L'Engle
The Giver - Lois Lowry
Out of the Dust - Karen Hesse
Good Night, Mr. Tom - Michelle Magorian
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle - Avi
Holes - Louis Sachar
Tunes for Bears to Dance To - Robert Cormier
The Watsons Go To Birmingham - Christopher Paul Curtis
The Tale of Despereaux - Kate DiCamillo
The Music of Dolphins - Karen Hesse
Harris and Me - Gary Paulsen (high interest)
Crash - Jerry Spinelli
Stepping on the Cracks - Mary Downing Hahn
The Lighting Thief - Rick Riordan
Forged by Fire - Sharon Draper
Wringer - Jerry Spinelli
Hoot - Carl Hiaasen
Bud, Not Buddy - Christopher Paul Curtis
Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key - Jack Zantos

I have taught others, but these are my favorites providing many
discussions and activities. I would be happy to give you more
information if you would like. These are great books, I hope you find a
use for any or all.

I have been asked to purchase novels for our middle school for the 6th
grade. These should be geared toward better readers.
Thank you
