Re: [MOSAIC] MOT2

2007-06-15 Thread gina nunley
I was/am fine with the separate MOT2 list. Seemed like it would keep it
focused and therefore easier for me actually. I would always know exactly
what those messages were about.

I did sign up for the digest form, but I am getting individual MOT2
messages. Anything I can do? Thanks, Gina

[MOSAIC] MOT2 Chat

2007-06-15 Thread Carrie Cahill
I LOVE the idea of a separate listserv for MOT2 discussion. I am a
district administrator and we give MOT to all of our new teachers. I
will print and use every bit of our conversation this summer on this
book with my group of new teachers this August. Having it as a separate
list makes it so much easier for me to follow and keep track of the
conversation.

Just my 2 cents.

[MOSAIC] MOT2 Chat has started

2007-06-15 Thread Keith Mack
I just wanted everyone to know that we've officially begun the MOT2 Chat
with Ginger's post.

As you know, we had a server issue yesterday and this may have affected some
of your memberships on this list. Specifically, some confirmations to
memberships on MOT2 may not have been received.

So, if you took the link and subscribed to MOT2 and don't see a message by
the end of today, please contact me off-list so I can help solve your
individual problem.

Also, with MOSIC and MOT2 lists I'm seeing a lot of issues from remote
servers (timeouts, refused connections, and "busy signals") and also issues
with mailboxes not existing and being over limit. These issues really impact
the "Quality of Service" (QOS) to everyone and are beyond my control. So
sometimes you may see messages delayed for several hours as our server sifts
through all the error messages.

Thanks for your understanding, and please contact me off-list with any
questions or problems.

Re: [MOSAIC] MOT2chat response

2007-06-15 Thread Zoe Jackson
I appreciate the thought you and Keith put into this. The plan for a
separate listserve for MOT2 sounds much clearer and organized than
mixing responses with other lines of thought brought up on the original
listserve. Thanks.

Re: [MOSAIC] Question about book discussion

2007-06-15 Thread Keith Mack
For those of you on MOT2. Please wait for Ginger to "officially" start up
this discussion.

There is no big brother involved, but just a professional courtesy to allow
the list moderator to get dialogue stated. Discussions on MOT2 and MOSAIC
are not moderated unless threads or topics start spiraling out of control.

If you have problems posting or getting messages from any list please let
Ginger or me know "off-list" rather than posting to the entire list. We are
happy to help you individually.

2007-06-15 Thread Keith Mack
OK so I'm not exactly off to bed yet. I've been meaning to send out this
message for those of you that going on extended travel or off to exotic
locations for study.

I'd like to ask, plead, and beg those of you that don't want list email to
please *not* put up an "out of office autoresponder" and take off for a
month or two.

If you will be gone for an extended period of time and want to keep your
email inbox from overflowing this summer, please take care of making these
changes yourselves. Just visit the main list info page at:
http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org.

Once you login, you can change to digest or temporarily disable your
subscription until you return from your trip. If you are also on The
Literacy Workshop list or MOT2Chat list, you can change settings "Globally"
and this will affect your subscriptions on all these lists in one click.

As always, you can email Ginger [EMAIL PROTECTED] or me off-list and
we'll be happy to do this for you.

Subject: Re: [MOSAIC] MOT2 book talk BEGINS!!

Hmmm, I can see the point of view here. I understand that it is nice for
all to listen in on the book talk and it does make it all
one-step-more-complicated to start a separate list for the talk.

On the other hand I think I can see benefits to a separate list as well. Two
possible reasons to hold the book talk separately (they may or may not be
good enough reasons to all the great folks on this list--just thought I
would pipe in with thoughts on the other side):

One thought is smoothness. Book talks run more smoothly if we can read down
the posts in order and have them all be about the same subject. Other
"inserts" to the conversation can be distracting, kind of like trying to
listen to 2 or 3 conversations at a party. That is the nature of a listserv,
but it might be interesting to try a booktalk without the other talk in the
same room.

Thought two is about depth of discourse. I have found in the past that
people jump in on book talks that are not reading the book. No crime
there:); listservs have that "join-in" aura that is irresistable. I suspect
people join in that are not reading the book because they get some ideas
from the conversation and certainly they have something to share and say.
Nevertheless, since they have not been reading the book their additions can
sometimes be digressions that take us away from an in-depth analysis of the
reading material. It is kind of like trying to sit on a couch and talk with
people about a shared book while concurrently turning and explaining
features of the book to others that drop in but haven't read the book.
Suddenly, you have two conversations happening. It can work, but it might
not always benefit the dialogue.

I do not know whether my thinking on this is the same as Ginger's, perhaps
she has additional reasons for the separate conversation. I am open to
whichever format the list wants to do, but I did want to share some ideas
why a separate space might be beneficial. Perhaps there are more reasons,
too.

My two cents,
Bonita
