Re: [MOSAIC] Research Based Response to Intervention fro Middle School

2008-03-26 Thread KENNETH SMITH
Florida Center for Reading Research (fcrr.org) is a great resource, but I don't
think it goes beyond 3rd grade - someone correct me if I'm wrong on that.

DIBELS assessments or AIMS seem to be the most popular assessment and they go
beyond the lower grades and I believe include math. DIBELS can all be
downloaded free - everything you need. I don't think AIMS is free. My building
is piloting RtI with grades K-3 this year. My opinion has not been formed on
DIBELS yet - I'm concerned about the lack of assessment for comprehension.
Everything is timed and based on only 1 minute's worth of responses/reading.
Many kids can hold it together to read for 1 minute - but can't maintain that
level of concentration or can't comprehend more lengthy text. I'm hoping to
have a strong enough voice to get some aspect of DRA2 incorporated into our
tiers of interventions.

I'd be interested, too, in what resources there are for the middle grades.

Florida Center for Reading Research (fcrr.com, maybe .edu?). Tons of
research-based ideas. Joe Torgensen, reading guru and experienced teacher,
runs the center.
Good luck.

Re: [MOSAIC] Project READ

2008-03-26 Thread cnjpalmer
Project READ (at least here in my district) is a multisensory approach to the
teaching of reading that focuses on teaching decoding skills and sight words
using tactile-kinesthetic methods. It is good for it's purpose, but would not
be a core program.

Can anyone give me information about Project READ.

Project Read materials are distributed through the Gemicy school here in the
Baltimore area, but the actual phonology guide comes from Language Circle
Enterprises, PO Box 20631 Bloomington MN, 55420. It was written?by Victoria
Greene and Mary Lee Enfield, PhD.

[MOSAIC] Lookybook site great for smart boards

2008-03-26 Thread Michelle TeGrootenhuis
Here's a new web site that's just in its "beta" stage:
http://lookybook.com/index.php

Browse/READ ENTIRE picture books online. Especially cool if you have a
SmartBoard! Some books are difficult to read, as the text is too small and
they don't have a zoom feature yet, but MOST are just fine to read online.
When used with a SmartBoard, it's kind of a digital big book!

Check it out!

Teachers say principal threatened to kill them if TAKS test scores didn't

Express-News

NEW BRAUNFELS -- A middle school principal threatened to kill a group of
science teachers if their students did not improve their standardized test
scores, according to a complaint filed with the New Braunfels Police
Department.

I don't teach at this school or in this school district-but our principals
let it be known that their evaluations are based solely on their TAKS
scores.

[MOSAIC] Book summaries?

website,
service or program that gives thorough summaries of novels so I can be sure my
students have read and adequately comprehended the books?
Thanks,

My school has been using Project Read with good success for
approximately 7 years. It is our primary phonics program for K and 1
and used with new to our school 2nd graders and those that need a
little more phonics instruction. We also look to it for some
spelling instruction. In addition we use HM as our core program.
