Carol Spinello Literacy Specialist I would recommend the Comprehension Toolkit and Making Meaning as great resources for reading comprehension. Making Meaning is more structured and scripted than the toolkit and maybe more than some would like - but they are both great when used as RESOURCES. Just this last summer I started reading MOT, etc. and have been trying to implement ideas from MOT into Fountas and Pinnell. Just seeing if anyone does this, how they feel about it, and if they have any tips. [MOSAIC] Math Journals
Hello, My name is Shirley Anderson and I am a student teacher from Wayne State University. I am currently working on an idea from the Mosiac of Thought text to integrate a reading comprehension strategy into my Mathematic's course. I work with middle school age students and I am complating incorporating journals into the class. What I am courious about is whether anyone has attempted this strategy in a math clas and whether the strategy works or not. Also, is no one has attempeted this strategy, I was wondering whether you believe this is a good idea for incorportaing reading comprehension into the math class based on other experiences you may have had. If for some reason you believe this is not a good strategy would you please take the time to suggest one you believe would better suit this class environment. Re: [MOSAIC] Math Journals
Hi Shirley, Writing in math has become more expected over the last few years. Keeping a meaningful journal, not one that is just a time-filler, is a great way for students to write their way to meaning in math. I have my fifth graders write explanations of strategies, write letters to others explaining a math concept, and use numbers, drawings, tables, and words in their journals to work through math problems. I hope this helps, Maureen Morrissey ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. Re: [MOSAIC] Math Journals
I have my kids use a math journal by setting what their goals for the week are and then at the end of the week describing how they met their goals and what they understood or did not It's great reading after having tried to teach division of fractions let me tell you. We do a chart too that says on one side, I get this because and on the other side, I don't get this because or I have the kids answer a specific question about their understanding. --- On Wed, 1/4/09, Maureen Morrissey mobil...@optonline.net wrote: From: Maureen Morrissey mobil...@optonline.net Subject: Re: [MOSAIC] Math Journals To: aj81...@yahoo.com, 'Mosaic: A Reading Comprehension Strategies Email Group' mosaic@literacyworkshop.org Received: Wednesday, 1 April, 2009, 10:25 AM Hi Shirley, Writing in math has become more expected over the last few years. Re: [MOSAIC] Math Journals
Shirley, Funny you should ask. Our principal has assigned us a book review titled Literacy Strategies for Improving Mathematics Instruction by Joan M. Kenney et al. It is a short read with chapters like, Reading a Mathematics classroom and Writing in the Mathematics classroom. It may just the resource that you need! Much of it seems to be beneficial to middle and high school rather than primary elementary. Hope it helps.
