Last summer I got a book from Amazon and it covered various kinds of
intervention. I don't have it with me now, but it was a yellow book and
I am thinking the title was RTI - I will look later today to confirm -
sorry to be so vague.

Hello Everyone,

I am on a school-wide committee working to create a district document
outlining RTI. My group has the large task of compiling resources for
literacy interventions and literacy progress monitoring
assessments...HELP!! Can anyone recommend resources, web-sites,
professional books, etc? Also have you developed a way to get these
resources into the hands of classroom teachers and support staff? Any
and all help is appreciated.

I would recommend the Comprehension Toolkit and Making Meaning as great
resources for reading comprehension. Making Meaning is more structured
and scripted than the toolkit and maybe more than some would like - but
they are both great when used as RESOURCES.

Our school's reading curriculum in Fountas and Pinnell. Just this last
summer I started reading MOT, etc. and have been trying to implement ideas
from MOT into Fountas and Pinnell. Just seeing if anyone does this, how they
feel about it, and if they have any tips.

Thanks,

Shannon

[MOSAIC] Math Journals

2009-03-31 Thread Shirley Anderson
Hello,
My name is Shirley Anderson and I am a student teacher from Wayne State
University.  I am currently working on an idea from  the Mosiac of Thought
text to integrate a reading comprehension strategy into my Mathematic's course.
I work with middle school age students and I am complating incorporating
journals into the class.  What I am courious about is whether anyone has
attempted this strategy in a math clas and whether the strategy works or not.
Also, is no one has attempeted this strategy, I was wondering whether you
believe this is a good idea for incorportaing reading comprehension into the
math class based on other experiences you may have had.  If for some reason you
believe this is not a good strategy would you please take the time to suggest
one you believe would better suit this class environment.
Thank you,

Shirley Anderson

Re: [MOSAIC] Math Journals

2009-03-31 Thread Maureen Morrissey
Hi Shirley,
Writing in math has become more expected over the last few years. Keeping a
meaningful journal, not one that is just a time-filler, is a great way for
students to write their way to meaning in math. I have my fifth graders
write explanations of strategies, write letters to others explaining a math
concept, and use numbers, drawings, tables, and words in their journals to
work through math problems.

I hope this helps,
Maureen Morrissey

Re: [MOSAIC] Math Journals

2009-03-31 Thread suzie herb
I have my kids use a math journal by setting what their goals for the week are
and then at the end of the week describing how they met their goals and what
they understood or did not   It's great reading after having tried to teach
division of fractions let me tell you.  We do a chart too that says on one
side, I get this because and on the other side, I don't get this because or I
have the kids answer a specific question about their understanding.

Re: [MOSAIC] Math Journals

2009-03-31 Thread Sandy Black
Shirley,

Funny you should ask. Our principal has assigned us a book review titled
Literacy Strategies for Improving Mathematics Instruction by Joan M. Kenney
et al. It is a short read with chapters like, Reading a Mathematics
classroom and Writing in the Mathematics classroom. It may just the
resource that you need! Much of it seems to be beneficial to middle and
high school rather than primary elementary. Hope it helps.
