It's a wonderfully illustrated picture book.

Is this a novel or a picture book?

Subject: [MOSAIC] Great new book for inference

Hi Everyone,

I attend Major League Baseball's Fan Fest in St. Louis about a month ago and
was fortunate to receive a copy of Sharon Robinson's new book about her dad
called Testing the Ice.  It is a great book for inference.  The book comes
out in October.  Don't forget to check it out!

Re: [MOSAIC] Classroom Library

2009-08-06 Thread Carmen Matsuura

I definitely agree with the ideas coming in so far to build your first
classroom library. You may also see if your local library system has a used
book store, ours is called The Friends of the Library. Many people donate
their books there, especially what doesn't sell at a yard sale. There are also
sales racks inside of public libraries where you can buy used books and
magazines.

Another idea is to suggest at the beginning of the year that parents send in a
birthday book instead of cupcakes or other treats. The birthday student could
read it to the class or have the teacher read it or part of it, then
ceremoniously put a donated by label and a picture of the child on the inside
cover and place it in a special birthday book basket. I got that idea from a
most amazing kindergarten teacher/university elem. ed. instructor -Resi Ditzel.

During school book fairs, fill out a wish list. I have my students help me in
making the list and they often tell their parents that they'd like to buy the
book for the classroom. Again, don't forget the student's picture and donated
by label for the inside of the book. Those books along with the new ones that
I buy go on the Just Arrived shelf.

Since you won't know what grade you'll be teaching you MAY want to focus on
picking up highly suggested picture books that you could use to read to little
ones as well as use it to teach strategies to older students. The classics and
award winning books are other good books to look for as well as those mentioned
on this list and in many of the teaching resources also mentioned on this list.

Make sure you're a Border's and Barnes Noble member (sign up for the teacher
discount card) so that you can use the coupons that come out. Border's just
put out a 40% coupon.

Have fun building your library!

Carmen
