[MOSAIC] Another Great resource for teaching Reading Strategies

2009-07-08 Thread Jo-Ann Van Staalduinen
Another great resource for teaching reading strategies in the Primary/ Junior
grades is Reading Power by Adriene Gear. She also has a new resource for Non
Fiction Reading Power. In this resource she provides wonderful songs that teach
the children the basics about the strategy and she also includes lessons and
book suggestions for each strategy. I love the concept that she uses a brain
divided into sections that relate to each of the reading strategies. To be a
proficient reader you use all the strategies ... some of the time ... so the
children do not get the idea that each strategy is used in isolation. I keep a
picture of a head with the brain up all year ... then as we are focussing on
each of the strategies we colour in the section we are working on and I also
have a big black arrow pointing to this reading strategy. Below the brain I
include a variety of sentence stems (many are from Tanny McGregor's) book to
help the children use the strategy in
their book conversations. I also use the Daily Five model in my Grade One
classroom so during Read to Someone the students are working on using the
reading Strategy vocabulary in their Check for Understanding conversations
with their partners.

Hello,

I'm a reading specialist who works with K-2.  I'm examining my practice and
wondering what others do with first grade?  How do you service first-graders?
Do you do guided reading with them?  Or does the classroom teacher handle all
the guided reading groups within the context of the classroom curriculum?  Do
you do more intervention?  I almost feel that by doing what I'm doing (pull out
small groups - guided reading, word wall, phonics, and dictation)  I'm trying
to provide a balanced literacy experience that maybe should be offered in the
classroom (but isn't always) and maybe I should be providing strictly
intervention.  Help  What do you do?

Thanks,
Patty

Have you seen the  resources from the Daily 5 and the CAFE model for Reading
Instruction by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser? I am using these resources with my
Grade One class ... and have had the best results this year. I also utilize the
ideas of Jan Richardson, she has a book coming out in June (available from
Amazon.com) that provides excellent Guided Reading strategies. Hope this helps
